Horseshoe Indianapolis Jockeys Collect Toys for Charity

In its eighth year, the jockeys at Horseshoe Indianapolis collected 70 toys that will be donated to the Shelby County CASA (Court Appointed State Advocates) for kids displaced in current home situations. “This toy drive is a great thing we do because we are helping a lot of kids who don't have the opportunity to enjoy Christmas every year,” said DeShawn Parker, winner of more than 6,000 career races. “It makes all of us feel good to do something as a group to help out each year.”

In addition to the annual toy drive, throughout the year the jockeys also raise funds for PDJF (Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund) and for HVAF (Hoosier Veterans and Families) Inc. of Indiana. “It's nice to help and I want to help out whenever I can,” added Marcelino Pedroza, Jr., who is a three-time leading jockey at Horseshoe Indianapolis. “Giving back is important to me. It's the way I was raised, and I want to help any way I can. I hope we can brighten the day of a few kids this Christmas.”

Tom Amoss Announces Filly’s DQ due to ‘Possible Accidental Cross-Contamination’

In a couple of tweets posted to his Twitter account Nov. 13, conditioner Tom Amoss announced that his filly Catwings (Cupid) would be disqualified from her maiden-breaking victory June 23 at Horseshoe Indianapolis due to testing 60 parts per trillion above the threshold of 20 parts per trillion for permissible medication. He did not state what the medication in question was but does include that the stewards reduced his suspension from 15 days to seven after they independently recognized it was a possible case of accidental cross-contamination. Catwings won the contest by two lengths as the even-money favorite, but shows as being disqualified to last in her lifetime record as of this posting.

Hot Little Thing Dominant First Stakes Winner for Army Mule

Hot Little Thing, coming off a seven-length maiden romp at Horseshoe Indianapolis, became the first stakes winner for her freshman sire Army Mule (Friesan Fire) with a dominant victory in the Back Home Again S. at the Indiana oval Wednesday. The even-money favorite zipped out to the early lead and was in control through fractions of :23.18 and :46.47. She skipped effortlessly clear down the lane and cruised home under wraps a much-the-best winner.

Hot Little Thing contested the pace before coming up 3/4-lengths short when second in her off-turf debut in Indiana July 19 before her emphatic maiden victory going five furlongs last time out Aug. 6.

Army Mule currently has 13 winners, including Danse Macabre who was second in the Bolton Landing S. at Saratoga.

Hot Little Thing has a yearling full-brother who sold for $25,000 at last year's Keeneland November sale. Her dam–who sold for $11,000 at the 2020 Keeneland November sale–was bred to Tacitus this year. Click for the Equibase.com chart.

Tony Martinez Named Horseshoe Indianapolis Track Superintendent

Tony Martinez has been named the new track superintendent at Horseshoe Indianapolis. Martinez is set to replace current track superintendent Roy Smith, who announced his retirement at the end of the Indiana track's 2022 season.

Martinez has been involved in track maintenance for more than 30 years and brings more than 15 years of experience as a track superintendent. The third generation track man has expertise in all surfaces and is especially know for his work in fine grading, track moisture evaluations, extensive harrowing, and soil composition. He has been involved with the construction of more than 25 training and arena facilities. Martinez has served as superintendent at seven racetracks over his career with his most recent post at Gulfstream Park.

“We are extremely pleased to bring in Tony as our next track superintendent,” said Eric Halstrom, Vice President and General Manager of Racing. “Roy has developed a great track maintenance program at our facility. We look forward to welcoming Tony in to continue the hard work already implemented. We have a great foundation for both our dirt and turf courses and are confident in Tony's skills to take the lead in this department.”

Horseshoe Indianapolis underwent a total track renovation during the 2018 racing season with an investment that topped $800,000. Prior to that, a new $3.3-million track maintenance building was constructed with upgrades in equipment added for both surfaces.

“I'm very excited to join the team at Horseshoe Indianapolis,” said Martinez. “Their facility is state of the art and being able to walk into a program like this is a great opportunity for me. I look forward to working with both the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse programs in Indiana.”
