OBS Winter Mixed Sale Begins Tuesday

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company opens its 2024 calendar with the two-day Winter Mixed Sale which begins Tuesday at noon. The auction opens with a preferred session of 137 catalogued short yearlings, broodmares and broodmare prospects. Following the preferred session, OBS will present an offering of 76 catalogued horses of racing age. The auction concludes Wednesday with 263 catalogued offerings in the company's open session, which also begins at noon.

The horses of racing age took to the OBS track Monday, with the unraced 3-year-old Saint George (St Patrick's Day) (hip 262) earning the under-tack show's bullet when working three furlongs in :32 1/5. Out of Crowninshield (Aldebaran), the chestnut colt was bred by Brent and Crystal Fernung and is consigned by the Fernungs' Journeyman Bloodstock Services.

“I thought he was going to work awful good,” said Brent Fernung. “He pulled a stifle before the April sale last year–and we thought he would work good there, too–so we just gave him plenty of time and decided to bring him back here. He stepped up and did what he was supposed to do.”

Journeyman is usually active selling at the 2-year-old sales, but Fernung agreed having an outlet to sell horses of racing age in Ocala in January is a welcome addition to the calendar.

“Historically, what we've done is we breed homebreds and sell them at the 2-year-old sales,” Fernung said. “And once that last 2-year-old sale goes by, part of the by-product of that is that horses who can't make it to those sales for one reason or another, you've got to have somewhere to go with them. It used to be, before we started doing this here, I ended up having to race all of those horses. We did OK doing that, but it turns into a two-year process before you know it.”

Of interest around the sales grounds Monday, Fernung said, “I thought it was a reasonable number of people watching the breeze show. And we have some nice mares in this sale and they seem to be getting looked at pretty regular, too. It's not a real busy place, but it never is. It always helps if it gets really cold up north right before this sale.”

“I've been saying since the end of the 2-year-old season last year, if we can just remain flat and level–and I'm not just talking about OBS, I am talking about the Thoroughbred industry in whole–it's been strong now for several years, so if we just don't lose any ground, I'd be satisfied,” Fernung said of expectations for the market. “I think that is realistic. I haven't seen anything that suggests to me that it's going to take a big downturn yet.”

During the 2023 Winter sale, 380 horses grossed $6,346,200 for an average of $16,701 and a median of $9,500. A yearling colt by Tapit brought top price of $225,000 and was one of two to bring six figures at the auction.

Keeneland Catalogs 1,509 Horses to January Sale

Keeneland has cataloged 1,509 horses–broodmares and broodmare prospects, yearlings and horses of racing age as well as stallions and stallion prospects–for the 66th January Horses of All Ages Sale, which will cover four sessions from Jan. 9-12, 2023.

The January Sale catalog now is available online at Keeneland.com. Print catalogs are scheduled to arrive in the mail the week of Dec. 19.

“Because the January Sale is held at the crossroads of racing and breeding seasons, the auction is a terrific opportunity for horsemen to plan for the future, whether they are breeders who seek broodmares and broodmare prospects for the coming breeding season or owners and trainers focused on the track who want to obtain newly turned yearlings and horses of racing age,” Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy said.

Denali Stud, agent, will handle 54 horses cataloged in the Dispersal of successful New York breeder Patricia Generazio. Among them are stakes winner Mischievous Dream (Into Mischief) along with Pure Bode (Bodemeister) and Marquet Legacy (Gio Ponti), who are all cataloged as racing or broodmare prospects.

The most recent graduate of the January Sale to excel at the highest level is Regal Glory (Animal Kingdom), who captured the GI Matriarch S. Sunday for her third Grade I win of the year. In addition, stakes winners of 2022 who were sold as yearlings at the January Sale include Grade I-winning juveniles And Tell Me Nolies (Arrogate) and Blazing Sevens (Good Magic) as well as MGSW Interstatedaydream (Classic Empire).

Each session of the January Sale begins at 10 a.m. ET. The schedule is as follows, with Book 1 settling Monday-Tuesday, Jan. 9-10 and Book 2 going Wednesday-Thursday, Jan. 11-12. The entire January Sale will be livestreamed at Keeneland.com and will be aired on the FanDuel Plus App. Scott Hazelton will report periodically on the first two sessions on FanDuel TV.

The January Sale catalog includes mares in foal to prominent stallions and emerging young sires. Among them is Charlatan, the leading covering sire at Keeneland's November Breeding Stock Sale. Additional covering sires include American Pharoah, Army Mule, Audible, Authentic, Bolt d'Oro, Constitution, Essential Quality, Girvin, Good Magic, Gun Runner, Hard Spun, Justify, Kitten's Joy, Knicks Go, Liam's Map, Medaglia d'Oro, McKinzie, No Nay Never, Not This Time, Quality Road, Sharp Azteca, Uncle Mo and Vekoma.

Among the sires of yearlings in the catalog are Audible, Authentic, City of Light, Constitution, Curlin, Good Magic, Gun Runner, Justify, Maclean's Music, McKinzie, Not This Time, Omaha Beach, Quality Road, Uncle Mo, Vekoma, Volatile and War of Will.

Additional Supplements for Keeneland’s HRA Sale

Keeneland will supplement 13 additional horses, including a dozen 2-year-olds, to its November Horses of Racing Age Sale, which will be held Thursday, Nov. 17, at noon ET. The supplements will all be on site for inspection Wednesday. The total number of horses catalogued for the HRA portion is 356.

Among the highlights of the new supplements is an unnamed colt by Good Magic who is a half-brother to recent Japanese GSP Lemon Pop (Lemon Drop Kid). From the family of Danehill, the colt is consigned by Highgate Sales, agent, as a racing or stallion prospect.

An unnamed colt by Into Mischief out of SW Distorted Passion (Distorted Humor) and a half-brother to GSW Mrs McDougal (Medaglia d'Oro) and SP Pendleton (Giant's Causeway) has also been consigned by Highgate Sales, agent, as a racing or stallion prospect.

Highgate Sales, agent, also has an unnamed colt by Into Mischief out of GSW Ever So Clever (Medaglia d'Oro). His granddam is MSW Foxy Danseur (Mr. Greeley) and he also is a racing or stallion prospect.

Among Highgate Sales's other 2-year-old offerings as racing or stallion prospects are colts by Into Mischief, Mendelssohn, Quality Road, and War Front. Highgate also has an unnamed 2-year-old filly by Practical Joke as a racing or broodmare prospect who is a half-sister to five stakes performers.

Grovendale Sales, agent, has the lone new supplement that isn't a juvenile. Grovendale has consigned Takntothecleaners (Secret Circle), a 4-year-old filly who has won or placed in eight of 10 career starts, including an allowance victory at Horseshoe Indianapolis Sept. 22 in her last start. She hails from the family of GISW Bordeaux Bob (Dewan Keys).

The HRA catalogue can be viewed on Keeneland's site here.
