Irish Racing Growth Continues Despite Pandemic in HRI Report

Six-month statistics for horse racing and breeding in Ireland shows underlying growth in the industry despite the ongoing challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. The report was released by Horse Racing Ireland on Thursday.

The metrics of horses in training (+24%), owners (+23.9%), new owner (+31%),  runners (+23.8%), fixtures (+8.4%), and race numbers (+14.6) have all shown strong growth over the corresponding pre-pandemic figures for 2019. Attendance at Irish racecourses was the major area where figures suffered, as there has been no public attendance at any racemeeting in Ireland for the first half of 2021. Owners have been limited to just 200 per meeting and were only able to return to racecourses on June 7.

Brian Kavanagh, CEO of Horse Racing Ireland, said, “The increase in the number of active owners and newly registered owners in Ireland bodes well for the future as does the increase in the number of horses-in-training which is the lifeblood of the industry. This added investment by owners is reflected in the fixture list and the increase in the number of runners in both National Hunt and Flat races can only be of benefit to the industry, particularly in relation to employment.

“The major concern as we moved into 2021 was the absence of persons other than necessary workers from the racecourse and it was six months into the year before owners were able to return. The attendance figure that we publish today is primarily made up of the owners who went racing for a little over three weeks in June.

“Clearly this had a knock-on effect on betting figures, however it is encouraging to note the increase in Tote pool betting compared to the same period in 2019 which is a result of the strategic alliance between Tote Ireland and the UK Tote Group which has been in place since the start of this year.

“2020 saw the bloodstock market severely disrupted with sales frequently deferred or relocated out of Ireland due to travel restrictions. There were issues again earlier this year, but as the restrictions around international travel ease, we are hopeful that the second half of 2021 will bring a return to the growth which the sector has experienced in recent years. The turnover at bloodstock sales in the first half of 2021, particularly the Goffs Land Rover Sale and the Tattersalls Derby Sale was encouraging.

“The number of racemeetings held behind closed doors or with a limited attendance since racing resumed in June 2020 is now in excess of 500 and this has severely impacted racecourses and the various businesses which rely on them.

“The racecourses have proved resilient however and through Government support schemes, cost cutting measures, the HRI sponsorship incentive scheme and media rights revenues, they are managing their way through the crisis.  That said, these measures can only be temporary and as the vaccination programme rolls out further, it is important that Irish racecourses are able to welcome back larger crowds at racemeetings.”

Kavanagh concluded, “Overall, the industry has shown resilience in the first six months of 2021 coping with the twin challenges of Brexit and Covid-19.  There is a body of work to be done to restore attendances, prizemoney and race sponsorship levels, however the fundamentals of the industry remain strong and activity levels in owning, breeding and buying horses are increasing.  The industry continues to deliver in terms of rural employment.

“This was backed up by research carried out for HRI by Red C in February which showed that two out of five people (40%) surveyed in a nationwide poll declared an interest in horse racing, a significant increase from 23% in 2020.

“Off the track, the first six months saw much focus on horse welfare and anti-doping issues and Horse Racing Ireland is working closely with industry stakeholders on a number of issues in both areas and will provide updates on an ongoing basis as this work proceeds.”

First ThoroughBid Sale Set For Sept. 12

New digital sale platform ThoroughBid will host its first sale on Sept. 12, the company announced on Thursday. Entries will be accepted for the platform through Friday, Sept. 3. ThoroughBid, which is currently a team sponsor in the William Hill Racing League, will kick off their sale at 10 a.m. on Sept. 12, with bidding ending for each lot at two-minute intervals beginning at 6 p.m. In addition, anti-snipe technology will be utilised, so that any bid made in the last minute will extend the auction by an additional two minutes.

Will Kinsey, co-founder of ThoroughBid, said, “The feedback we've had since launching last month has been very encouraging. ThoroughBid's sponsorship of the Racing League has helped raise awareness of what we are doing and it's been great to hear from a range of trainers, owners and breeders who are all interested in being involved in our first sale.

“The first sale falling in mid-September provides everyone with a good opportunity to buy and sell bloodstock. The flexibility of our product means we can setup future sales to suit the needs of the industry rather than sticking to traditional dates.”

Added Andrew Balding, who currently leads the UK Trainers' Championship and is one of Team ThoroughBid's trainers in the Racing League, “Selling horses is always a challenge and a new platform like ThoroughBid is very welcome.

“Not everybody needs to be waiting for the autumn sales and, obviously, income for our owners is very important if they are going to re-invest in time for the yearling sales.”

There is a hint that normalcy is returning to the Deauville sales ring, with the Arqana Summer Sale back up to its normal two-day stand beginning on June 30. A quality mix of 593 National Hunt and Flat horses plus wild cards are slated to be offered over the next two days, and the unraced 2-year-olds were put through their paces over the Deauville-La Touques Racecourse on June 29.

The juveniles kick start the sale, which begins at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, and continues with 156 young store horses and finishes with the Ecurie Central dispersal. On Thursday, there will be 127 fillies and mares, as well as one stallion and 206 horses-in-training will go under the hammer.

Among the juvenile lots of note are: lot 3, a Kodiac (GB) filly out of a Mount Nelson (GB) half-sister to G1 King's Stand S. hero Equiano (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}) from Knockatrina House; lot 18, an Exceed And Excel (Aus) colt who is a half-brother to the MGSW and GISP Elysea's World (Ire) (Champs Elysees {GB}) from Ecurie Yann Creff; Ecurie Prevost-Baratte's lot 37, a granddaughter of GI Mother Goose S. heroine Buster's Ready (More Than Ready) by Lope de Vega (Ire); a Siyouni (Fr) colt (lot 67) from the extended family of two-time Group 1 winner Ectot (GB) (Hurricane Run {Ire}) consigned by Ecurie Yann Creff; and Knockanglass Stable's lot 81I, a son of Night of Thunder (Ire) out of Clowning (Distorted Humor), herself a daughter of GI Gazelle S. heroine Flashing (A.P. Indy).

Leading the horses-in-training portion is G2 Italian 2000 Guineas hero Fayathaan (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) as lot 503. One of four from Roberto Biondi's Channel Consignment, the 3-year-old colt is joined by group winner Elisa Again (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) (lot 487); 2021 G2 Derby Italiano runner-up Juan de Montalban (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) (lot 488); and the black-type winner and G3 Italian St Leger-placed Agnes (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) (lot 502). Another Flat lot of interest is Jean-Claude Rouget's lot 489, Darkness (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), a winner of the Listed Criterium de Lyon and third in the 2021 G3 Prix La Force.

Topping the COVID-19-condensed one-day sale in 2020 was the National Hunt horse-in-training Prunay (Fr) (Prince Gibraltar {Fr}), who changed hands for €240,000. On the Flat side, a juvenile colt named Chez Pierre (Fr) by subsequent Champion First-Crop stallion Mehmas (Ire) brought €100,000. To date, he has won all three of his starts in the blue, green and white colours of American owner Roy Jackson. The overall statistics were 198 offered and 153 sold (77.3%) with a gross of €2,894,000. The average was €18,915 and the median was €9,000.
