Florida Derby Day: Rainbow 6 Jackpot, Late Pick 5 Pools Guaranteed At $1 Million

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 gross jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $1 million on Saturday's Curlin Florida Derby program at Gulfstream Park, where the popular multi-race wager went unsolved Friday for the 18th consecutive racing day following a March 5 mandatory payout.

The Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 9-14, anchored by the $1 million Curlin Florida Derby (G1) presented by Hill 'n' Dale Farms at Xalapa, which will be contested by a full field of 12 3-year-olds featuring Forte, the 4-5 morning-line favorite trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher.

Forte, the 2022 champion juvenile male, is riding a four-race winning streak that includes impressive performances in the Hopeful (G1) at Saratoga, Breeders' Futurity (G1) and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at Keeneland, as well as the March 4 Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream.

First-race post time is set for 11:30 a.m. Silks, Gulfstream's simulcast facility and all areas off the clubhouse open at 10 a.m.

The Rainbow 6 sequence will be comprised of six stakes on a 14-race program with 10 total stakes, five graded, worth $2.35 million in purses.

The $100,000 Sir Shackleton, a seven-furlong sprint for older horses, will kick off the sequence in Race 9. Pletcher-trained My Prankster, the 5-2 morning-line favorite in a field of nine, is 2-for-2 at Gulfstream, where he won the 2022 Swale (G3). Michael Yates-trained ultra-consistent Dean Delivers, who has finished first or second in nine of 13 career starts, is coming off three solid efforts in graded company.

A field of 10 older fillies and mares has been assembled for the $150,000 Sand Springs, a 1 1/16-mile turf stakes in Race 10. Chad Brown-trained Marketsegmentation, a sparkling optional claiming allowance winner at Gulfstream prior to a third-place finish in the Endeavor (G3) at Tampa, is the 2-1 morning-line favorite in a highly competitive race that includes Brendan Walsh-trained Princess Theorem, who finished a troubled third in the Honey Fox (G3) last time out following a sharp optional claiming allowance score. Trainer Graham Motion unveils Jouza, an Irish import who won three of seven starts in Europe. Mark Casse-trained Souper Hoity Toity, a graded-stakes winner on turf and Tapeta at Woodbine last season, is set to make her 2023 debut.

The $100,000 Sanibel Island, a 7 ½-furlong turf race for 3-year-old fillies, could well be a popular 'spread' event in Race 11 for Rainbow 6 wagerers. A well-matched field of 10 promising sophomore fillies could prove challenging for handicappers. Love Appeals, who won at first asking last time out, and Breath Away, a debut winner who was beaten by a nose on Tapeta next out, will represent trainer Christophe Clement. Jonathan Thomas will send out Mrs. Astor, an impressive maiden winner in her third start. Aunt Shirley, who hasn't raced since finishing off the board in the Spinaway (G1) at Saratoga, is scheduled to make her first start on turf and for Pletcher.

Pletcher will double up in Race 12 for the $250,000 Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2), a 1 1/16-mile stakes for 3-year-old fillies, with Miracle, who finished a close second in the Rachel Alexandra (G2) at Fair Grounds last out, and Atomically, who finished third in the Forward Gal (G3) in her first 2023 start. Michael Yates-trained Dorth Vader, who pulled off a 46-1 upset in the Davona Dale (G2) last out, is also prominent in the eight-horse field.

A full field of older horses will contest the $150,000 Appleton, a mile turf stakes, in Race 13. Pletcher will send out Steady On, who was beaten a half-length by stablemate Emmanuel in the Canadian Turf (G3). Fort Washington, trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey, finished a neck behind Steady On following a late rally in the Canadian Turf. Jorge Delgado-trained Winfromwithin, who finished second behind Emmanuel in the Tampa Bay (G3), is also among the leading contenders in a solid field.

Forte will be the star attraction in the Florida Derby in Race 14 while facing 11 rivals, including four colts trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., who saddled White Abarrio for a win in last year's running. Among Forte's more formidable rivals are Fort Bragg, a Southern California shipper who finished fifth in the San Felipe (G2) at Santa Anita; Dale Romans-trained Cyclone Mischief, who finished third behind Forte in the Fountain of Youth after setting the pace into the stretch; Gustavo Delgado-trained Mage, a lightly raced colt who finished a troubled fourth in the Fountain of Youth in only his second career start; and Danny Gargan-trained Dubyuhnell, who captured the Remsen (G2) last season.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

On Saturday's Florida Derby program, the Late Pick 5 pool will be guaranteed at $1 million, while the Late Pick 4 pool will be guaranteed at $750,000. The Late Pick 5 will span Races 10-14, while the Late Pick 4 will span Races 11-14. The Florida Derby will anchor both sequences.

There will also be a Super Hi-5 carryover of $5,724.05 starting in Race 1.

A Rainbow 6 mandatory payout is scheduled for Sunday, the last day of the Championship Meet. Should the Rainbow go unsolved through Saturday's Florida Derby Day program, the pool is expected to grow to $5 million-plus Monday.

The $1 Pick 6 returned $1,471.50 to bettors who selected 5-of-6 winners correctly.

Trevor McCarthy piloted the Peter Walder-trained Its Cold in Dehere [No. 4, $14.80] to a rallying score in Race 4 – a one-turn mile $20,000 claimer for older fillies and mares.

Sunday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Includes Action From Aqueduct, Oaklawn, Tampa

The New York Racing Association Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Sunday, featuring action from Aqueduct Racetrack, Oaklawn Park and Tampa Bay Downs.

The Cross Country Pick 5 requires bettors to pick the winner of five select races from tracks across the country. The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country with each week featuring a mandatory payout of the net pool. The Cross Country Pick 5, boasting a low 15 percent takeout, offers sequences with races from Aqueduct Racetrack and partner tracks across the country.

Sunday's sequence kicks off in Race 7 at 3:15 p.m. Eastern from Tampa Bay Downs with a 1 1/16-mile turf allowance featuring a contentious field of older fillies and mares. Trainer Rachel Halden will send out Chiefswood Stables homebred Maccool's Girl with first-time Lasix for her seasonal debut. The 4-year-old Candy Ride dark bay made her first two starts against older company, graduating on debut over the Woodbine turf in June ahead of a prominent fourth three weeks later traveling nine furlongs over Tapeta. She completed her campaign with an off-the-board effort in the Woodbine Oaks in July. Her dam – the Bernardini mare Finn's Girl – finished third in the 2015 P. G. Johnson over the Saratoga Race Course lawn. Other contenders include the 1-for-16 Applecross, who boasts a field-best 85 Beyer Speed Figure for trainer Matthew Kintz; and the graded-stakes placed Ambitieuse for conditioner Graham Motion.

Action switches to Oaklawn Park for the second leg [Race 5, 3:50 p.m.] where a field of nine sophomores line up for a one-mile maiden special weight led by Nyquick, who will look to graduate at second asking for trainer Brad Cox. The Nyquist colt was sawed off into the first turn of his March 11 debut over the same distance and course, but closed late to finish fourth. Trainer Kenny McPeek saddles a pair of contenders topped by Southern Sunset, who has finished second and been demoted to third in both lifetime starts. He crossed the wire a close second last out in a one-mile maiden tilt on March 11 behind next-out allowance winner Major Blue. McPeek also sends out first-time starter Mad Hustle, a Tapwrit colt purchased for $100,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Select Yearling Sale.

The middle leg will see a field of 10 maidens 3-years-old and up sprint five furlongs over the Tampa Bay turf [Race 9, 4:14 p.m.] headed by Team Valor International's Tuddenham Mill, who turns back in distance from a trio of one-mile turf tests at the Florida oval. Last out, the Irish-bred Holy Roman Emperor colt, trained by Arnaud Delacour, pressed the pace before finishing a close fifth after being forced to take up late. Partner Tours, a half-sibling to stakes winner Eclair, will make his debut for trainer Kathleen O'Connell; while Melanie Giddings will seek her first career win as a trainer with the recently gelded Fight, who steps up in class off a pair of close placings in synthetic sprints at Gulfstream Park.

The penultimate leg features the return of multiple graded-stakes winner Kathleen O. to Aqueduct [Race 7, 4:34 p.m.] for the $100,000 Top Flight, a nine-furlong route for older fillies and mares. Trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey, the 4-year-old Upstart dark bay boasts a record of 7-4-2-0, including two Grade 2 wins at Gulfstream Park ahead of a closing fifth in last year's Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks. A debut winner at the Big A in November 2021, she enters from a runner-up effort in the Grade 3 Royal Delta at Gulfstream Park that offered little pace for the popular filly's trademark kick. Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher provides a pair of top contenders in graded-stakes placed Falconet and New York-bred stakes winner Let Her Inspire U.

The sequence concludes at Oaklawn [Race 7, 4:54 p.m.] with a field of nine 3-year-olds and upward traveling 1 1/16-miles in a starter allowance that will see Trafalgar look to double up on wins off the claim for trainer Chris Hartman. The Lord Nelson gelding made four consecutive starts in graded company last year before dropping in and winning a 1 1/16-mile route on February 11 at Oaklawn. Hartman also saddles graded-stakes winner Major General, a 4-year-old Constitution gelding that captured the Grade 3 Iroquois at Churchill Downs as a juvenile. A wide-open affair features four-time Oaklawn winner Saqeel for trainer Robertino Diodoro; and the consistent Winterwood, who garnered a 96 Beyer three starts back here for conditioner Terry Brennan.

Australian Elite Compete At The Championships

Australian racing's equivalent of the Breeders' Cup commences this Friday night, as Day 1 of “The Championships at Randwick” showcases global Group 1 talent across a multitude of conditions and distances. The two-day elite event, which concludes next Friday night, features AU$20 million in purses. Sky Racing World's Jason Witham and FanDuel TV's Andrew “Dubbs” Anderson will be broadcasting live from Sydney's Royal Randwick on FanDuel TV. First post is 9:10 p.m. ET / 6:10 p.m. PT.

The TJ Smith Stakes (Race 7) exemplifies Australia's status as the world's premier source of turf sprinters. Nature Strip (7-2), who crushed his rivals at Royal Ascot last summer, appears to be finally succumbing to the reality of aging. Yet, after two subpar efforts this campaign, trainer Chris Waller is bullish that the 8-year-old has rebounded and is fully capable of a record fourth victory in this race.

The performance by Godolphin mare In Secret to win last month's G1 Newmarket Handicap rated so highly that connections of sixth-place finisher The Astrologist sent their horse to Dubai. The Astrologist, ignored in the wagering at 26-1, went within a head of upsetting the G1 Al Quoz Sprint last Saturday. There is no question that In Secret would have won comfortably, but she's only the 5-1 third wagering choice for the TJ Smith! Giga Kick (5-2 favorite) won last October's The Everest, the world's richest race on turf, at just his 5th career start while still three days short of his actual third birthday. Giga Kick's comeback race from a layoff was tremendous, as he savaged the finish line from well off the pace in a G2 five-furlong race on March 3.

Giga Kick will have the services of Australia's international riding star, 40-year-old Zac Purton, who has spent the past decade dazzling racing fans in Hong Kong. Purton secured a release from Hong Kong to ride at the “Sydney Autumn Carnival,” and made an immediate impact by landing a G1 double on March 3. Purton has enjoyed an epic Hong Kong rivalry with Brazilian Joao Moreira, holding a 5-4 edge in riding titles after outdueling Moreira on closing day last season. Moreira is now in semi-retirement, but rode on Dubai World Cup night and has now joined Purton in Sydney for The Championships. Moreira rides 50-1 longshot Paulele in the TJ Smith.

Friday night's richest race is the AU$4 million Doncaster Mile (Race 8), a time-honored handicap dating back to 1866. The Doncaster Mile features the delayed Australian debut of star U.S. mare Going Global (40-1), who was profiled in last week's article before being scratched. Going Global was withdrawn from a Group 1 race for fillies and mares after drawing an extremely wide gate. While faring much better in the Doncaster draw, her 19 opponents include numerous top-quality males.

Mr Brightside (9-2 favorite) is the defending Doncaster champion, and will be another first-time ride for the in-demand Zac Purton. Joao Moreira, Purton's Hong Kong sparring partner, rides Fangirl (6-1) for champion trainer Chris Waller. A high-class mare, Fangirl has three straight minor placings behind Australia's best horse, Anamoe. Waller also prepares 3-year-old filly Zougotcha (7-1), a G1 winner at the Randwick Mile last October. Alligator Blood (10-1), whose popularity borders on a cult following, is 5-for-10 in Group 1 races.

The Doncaster Mile's handicap conditions make Protagonist (9-1) the horse to beat. With solid, but non-stakes, form in England, the William Haggas trainee has snuck under the radar of the racing secretary. Protagonist will carry only 110 pounds, versus highweight Alligator Blood's 126. Protagonist won a G3 at 1 1/4 miles in his Australian debut, beating impressive subsequent winner Zeyrek. His biggest obstacle is cutting back to below his typical distance range. While Protagonist's English form lacks Group status, his last race there yielded a second-place finish to Algiers, runner-up last Saturday in the Dubai World Cup.

The Australian Derby (Race 9) looks to be at the mercy of ace New Zealander Sharp 'N' Smart, who boasts Group 1 wins on both sides of the Tasman Sea. Sharp 'N' Smart is already lurking near the top of future book markets for November's Melbourne Cup. He won last October's Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick, and showed he's right on song with a last-start victory in the New Zealand Derby at the same journey (1 1/2 miles) as Friday night's assignment. Bookmakers eased his odds fractionally to 5-2 after Smart 'N' Sharp drew a horrendous post position. However, the tough Kiwi gelding has overcome wide trips previously – including in the Spring Champion when ridden by Hugh Bowman (of Winx fame), who again is entrusted with the navigational duties this Friday night.

Golden Slipper runner-up Cylinder headlines the Sires Produce Stakes (Race 6). Two weeks after finishing second as favorite in the world's richest 2-year-old race, the Godolphin colt (6-5) will aim to go one better while rising from six to seven furlongs.

The Randwick card will be broadcast live on FanDuel TV this Friday night (First Post: 9:10 p.m. ET / 6:10 p.m. PT) alongside cards from Hawkesbury, Doomben and Ascot. All races will be live-streamed in HD on the new Sky Racing World Appskyracingworld.com and major ADW platforms such as TVG, TwinSpiresXpressbet, NYRABets, WatchandWagerHPIbet, and AmWager. Wagering is also available via these ADW platforms. Fans can get free access to live-streaming, past performances, and expert picks on all races at skyracingworld.com.

A native of Brisbane, Australia, Michael Wrona has called races in six countries. Michael's vast U.S. experience includes; race calling at Los Alamitos, Hollywood Park, Arlington and Santa Anita, calling the 2000 Preakness on a national radio network and the 2016 Breeders' Cup on the International simulcast network. Michael also performed a race call voiceover for a Seinfeld episode called The Subway.
