Friday’s Card At Aqueduct Features $31,585 Pick 6 Carryover

Friday's card at the Aqueduct Racetrack spring meet will be bolstered by a Pick 6 carryover of $31,585 after the multi-race wager went unsolved on Thursday's eight-race card.

The $1 Pick 6 returned $3,509.50 to bettors who selected 5-of-6 winners correctly.

The sequence kicked off in Race 3, a seven-furlong $40,000 claimer for older fillies and mares, as Jaime Torres piloted Baba [No. 5, $18.80] to victory for trainer Oscar Barrera, III and owner K Five Stable.

Dylan Davis piloted the Linda Rice-trained Glory Road [No. 3, $3.10*] to a rallying score in Race 4 – a six-furlong $32,000 claimer for older horses.

Gallagher's Stud's Olympic Dreams [No. 4, $33.20] earned a second career conquest for trainer Patrick Quick in Race 5 – a nine-furlong allowance test for New York-breds 3-years-old and upward. Trevor McCarthy was aboard for the journey.

Ronald P. Stewart's Winter Pool [No. 7, $3.40*], trained by Linda Rice, earned his fifth triumph in Race 6, a nine-furlong $12,500 claimer for older horses. Eric Cancel piloted the son of Curlin.

In Race 7, a nine-furlong allowance optional claimer for older horses, Dylan Davis guided Anejo [No. 3, $19.80] to victory for trainer Doug O'Neill and owner Calumet Farm.

With only one horse covered in the Race 8 finale, Maddy Olver rode the Gary Sciacca-trained Sweetie [No. 3, $71.50] to a late-rallying victory in the six-furlong maiden special weight for fillies and mares 3-years-old and upward.

Friday's Pick 6 will kick off in Race 3 at 2:24 p.m. Eastern and features the Grade 3 Distaff Handicap in Race 7. First post for the eight-race card is 1:20 p.m. Eastern.

Anamoe vs. Dubai Honour At The Championships

The “Championships at Randwick” will climax this Friday night with a hotly anticipated clash of hemispheres between Australia's best racehorse, Anamoe, and English raider, Dubai Honour. In the mold of the Breeders' Cup, more than AU$27 million in riches are distributed across eight Group 1 races at The Championships, which began last Friday night and provided some huge payouts and great value for horseplayers. Sky Racing World's Jason Witham and FanDuel TV's Andrew “Dubbs” Anderson will be broadcasting live from Sydney's Royal Randwick on FanDuel TV. First post is 9:40 p.m. ET / 6:40 p.m. PT.

The AU$5 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Race 8) has echoes of the epic battles between English warrior, Addeybb, and Australian Horse of the Year, Verry Elleegant, who crossed swords four memorable times in 2020 and '21. This year, Dubai Honour has seamlessly adopted the role of Addeybb, with the same English trainer-jockey combination of William Haggas and Tom Marquand. And Anamoe will inevitably be voted Horse of the Year for the current Australian season. Coincidentally, the pair won successive races on the same March 17 card at Rosehill. Dubai Honour pulverized Group 1 opposition in a spectacular Australian debut at the Queen Elizabeth distance of 1 1/4 miles. Forty-five minutes later, Anamoe overcame a difficult trip to score a hard-fought, courageous win at 7 1/2 furlongs. That victory extended his world record for Group 1 wins by a Godolphin horse to nine. The Queen Elizabeth will be Anamoe's final race on Australian soil, before the 4-year-old champion son of Street Boss is sent to Royal Ascot.

Bookmakers are finding Dubai Honour and Anamoe inseparable, quoting each at 3-2 (ironically, they have even drawn adjacent post positions). However, both James Cummings, Anamoe's trainer, and Haggas have cautioned against considering the Queen Elizabeth a two-horse race. Given the growing global impact of Japanese horses, Unicorn Lion (10-1) should not be taken lightly – nor should his trainer.

In 2021, Yoshito Yahagi became the first Japanese trainer to win a Breeders' Cup race (he actually had two winners at Del Mar: Loves Only You and Marche Lorraine). Yahagi had already won a jewel of Australian racing, the W.S. Cox Plate in 2019 with star mare Lys Gracieux. The 62-year-old's visit to Royal Randwick is a homecoming of sorts, as he started his career at Randwick in 1981 at age 20. Yahagi gained invaluable experience working for Australian Hall of Fame trainer Neville Begg, whom he respectfully remembers as his “master.” As a champion trainer in Japan who has won numerous high-level races in five other countries – including February's Saudi Cup with Panthalassa – Yahagi now commands his own respect and is “really excited to be back here.”

The Sydney Cup (Race 7) is Australia's second-best two-mile race – no embarrassment, given the Melbourne Cup's status as one of the world's great sporting events. Twenty horses will exit the gate, with 3-1 favorite Cleveland having to overcome one of the widest draws. Trained by Ireland's Joseph O'Brien, Cleveland closed encouragingly in his Australian debut when fifth at 1 1/2 miles in the G1 Tancred Stakes.  King Frankel (7-1) and Arapaho (12-1) beat home Cleveland in the weight-for-age Tancred; all three will enjoy sizeable weight drops under the Cup's handicap conditions.

The powerhouse training combination of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace will saddle their winner and third-place finisher from last November's Melbourne Cup, Gold Trip (8-1) and High Emocean (10-1). Gold Trip is endeavoring to become just the fifth horse to win the Melbourne and Sydney Cups in the same season (both races were inaugurated in the 1860s). He will appreciate the anticipated softer conditions than in his prep races, but Gold Trip rises to 131 pounds after winning the Melbourne Cup with 126. He will concede 15-21 pounds to his aforementioned rivals, including stablemate High Emocean, who finished in similarly pleasing fashion to Cleveland in her final tune-up at 1-5/8 miles. O'Brien also trains 14-1 shot Baron Samedi, who won the 2021 G2 Belmont Gold Cup at two miles in the U.S.

The Australian Oaks (Race 6) features Pavitra (5-2), a daughter of American Pharoah who placed second in last November's G1 Victoria Oaks and in another Group 1 race two weeks ago. Pennyweka (4-1) is a $22,000 supplemental entry, after winning the G1 New Zealand Oaks at the same distance (1 1/2 miles) as its Sydney counterpart. Arts (7-1) has been the best supported runner since impressively landing a 25-1 upset in a Group 3 prep race, at only her third career start. Polygon (9-1) is another New Zealand-trained threat, with two Australian prep races under her belt.

The Queen of the Turf Stakes (Race 9) showcases fillies and mares at a mile. Enormous interest surrounds the Australian debut of Alcohol Free, who boasts Group 1 wins in England at 2, 3 and 4 years. Her most recent race was at Goodwood last summer, when third behind 10-for-11 superstar Baaeed and dual Breeders' Cup winner Modern Games. In November, she became the second-highest priced horse ever sold at a European auction, bringing approximately US$7.3 million. A name to which few Aussies could relate, Alcohol Free nonetheless heads the wagering at 5-2 after winning a recent “barrier trial” (training race).

The Randwick card will be broadcast live on FanDuel TV this Friday night (First Post: 9:40 p.m. ET / 6:40 p.m. PT) alongside cards from Newcastle, Doomben and Ascot. All races will be live-streamed in HD on the new Sky Racing World Appskyracingworld.com and major ADW platforms such as TVG, TwinSpiresXpressbet, NYRABets, WatchandWagerHPIbet, and AmWager. Wagering is also available via these ADW platforms. Fans can get free access to live-streaming, past performances, and expert picks on all races at skyracingworld.com.

A native of Brisbane, Australia, Michael Wrona has called races in six countries. Michael's vast U.S. experience includes; race calling at Los Alamitos, Hollywood Park, Arlington and Santa Anita, calling the 2000 Preakness on a national radio network and the 2016 Breeders' Cup on the International simulcast network. Michael also performed a race call voiceover for a Seinfeld episode called The Subway.

America’s Best Racing, National Steeplechase Association Join Forces To Livestream Middleburg Spring Races

America's Best Racing, a fan-development and awareness-building platform launched by The Jockey Club to increase the profile and visibility of horse racing, has partnered with the National Steeplechase Association to broadcast the Middleburg Spring Races at Glenwood Park in Virginia later this month.

The two-hour livestream, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. when the field heads to the post for the first of eight races worth $250,000, will be hosted by ABR's Dan Tordjman, NSA personality Megan Connolly, and Briana Mott from Stable Duel, another NSA partner this spring that allows fans to compete for cash prizes by picking winners during the spring jump racing season. Longtime NSA supporter Brown Advisory is sponsoring the event. The live broadcast will also feature guests who will discuss steeplechasing, the Virginia Hunt Country lifestyle, the local Piedmont Heritage area, and more. You can access America's Best Racing by clicking here.

The idea for the broadcast came from a synergistic meeting between ABR's Tordjman, manager of business development and sponsorships, and Connolly.

“I wanted to see how the NSA could partner with ABR to showcase steeplechasing to a broader racing audience,” she said. “As ABR is the marketing arm of the Jockey Club, this is exactly what they do; engage with racing fans, create robust content and show the fun side of racing. They have gone to Far Hills in the past and see steeplechasing as another product to expose their followers to.”

And the potential to expose jump racing to the wider racing audience is significant. America's Best Racing has nearly 500,000 online followers, and those who tune in will get to witness the sport at its best. Middleburg is a showcase for Eclipse Award-caliber talent, and the featured Grade II $100,000 Temple Gwathmey hurdle stakes is often a stepping stone for horses aiming for the Grade I Iroquois stakes in Nashville several weeks later.

“We are extremely excited to partner with the National Steeplechase Association on this first-of-its-kind livestream from the Middleburg Spring Races,” Tordjman added. “At America's Best Racing, we're committed to promoting the best racing, heightening the buzz around big events and sharing the stories that spark fandom. Given the history at Middleburg and the scene at Glenwood Park every spring, there couldn't be a more appropriate moment for ABR to jump into the steeplechase world.”

Equibase Analysis: Classic Car Wash Offers Best Value In Blue Grass Stakes

This Saturday's $1 million Toyota Blue Grass Stakes drew a field of 11 3-year-olds aspiring to make their marks and move on to the Kentucky Derby in four weeks. The winner's share of 100 points on the “Road to the Derby” makes it a certainly that horse can run in the “Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” next month, but even finishing third (worth 30 points) could be enough for some horses which already have a few points to their names.

Leading the field is Tapit Trice (50 points to date), winner of the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Derby last month and having won three races in a row. Tampa Bay Derby runner-up Classic Car Wash (26 points) hopes to run as well or better in the Blue Grass Stakes and make his way on to the big dance on May 6. Raise Cain (54 points) is another strong contender, having proven he belongs near the top of the division with a decisive seven and one-half length win last month in the G3 Gotham Stakes in New York.

Verifying (14 points) was stakes placed last year as a 2-year-old when second in the G1 Champagne Stakes and finished fourth as the betting favorite in the G2 Rebel Stakes in his most recent race. Blazing Sevens (16 points) won the Champagne last fall before a fourth place effort in the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile. However, his only start this year resulted in an eighth of nine finish in the G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes. Sun Thunder (34 points) got on everyone's radar with a big finish from 10th to second in the G2 Risen Star Stakes in February, but that was followed up by a non-threatening fifth place effort in the G2 Louisiana Derby two weeks ago.

Hayes Strike (7 points) just won the non-graded Private Terms Stakes at Laurel Race Course in Maryland and he was competitive last fall as a 2-year-old when third in the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes so appears to fit with these. Scoobie Quando (8 points) rallied fast in the stretch for second in the John Battaglia Stakes five weeks ago and is another lightly raced and potentially improving prospect. Clear the Air (5 points) earned five points when rallying for fifth in the Gotham and appears to need a lot of improvement to earn significant points in this race. Mendelssohns March and Major Blue complete the field of 11, with both entering stakes competition for the first time.

Analysis and top contenders:

I am going to start with Classic Car Wash, not because he's superior to the three likely public choices in Tapit Trice, Verifying and Raise Cain, but because it is very likely he will offer the highest odds of the quartet. The colt continues to improve with every start, having raised his ™ Equibase® Speed Figures in four straight races, from 77, to 80, to 86 and then to 95. That last effort came when finishing second of 12 to Tapit Trice in the Tampa Bay Derby four weeks ago. In that race, Classic Car Wash began in ninth in the field of 12, advanced to fourth with a quarter mile to run, was third with an eighth of a mile to run, then made the lead and was accelerating before Tapit Trice showed his late kick to go by in the final sixteenth of a mile. I particularly like it when horses lead late in a race even if beaten by another horse or two because it shows they understand what their task is and they can respond to the jockey's cues to accelerate when needed. Now getting the services of Javier Castellano and with that last race 95 figure just three points below the top speed figure (98, by Tapit Trice) in the field, Classic Car Wash only has a slightly lesser probability than the top betting choice, but will offer about four times the return and that is why he is my top choice to win this year's Toyota Blue Grass Stakes.

Tapit Trice started showing excellent physical ability and mental toughness in the second start of his career last December when battling head-and-head in the final eighth of a mile, prevailing by a neck. The 96 ™ figure earned at the time was very strong for a 2-year-old in December, comparable to the 98 figure Blazing Sevens earned winning the Champagne Stakes in October. In his third career start Tapit Trice pulled off to an eight-length win with the same 96 figure, then when sent to post as the prohibitive betting choice in the Tampa Bay Derby, he did not disappoint. Starting out 11th of 12 in that race, Tapit Trice showed little early speed until about three-sixteenths of a mile to run when reminded to start running harder by jockey Luis Saez. Continually passing horses, the colt went from 4 1/2 lengths back with an eighth of a mile to go to draw off by two lengths, using big strides to gobble up the ground. Horses have won the Blue Grass Stakes coming from far back and certainly the field high last race 98 figure earned in the Tampa Bay Derby can be improved upon in this race. On the other hand, there may be few horses interested in leading early in this race and the pace may be slower than average, which has potential to hamper the same kind of late kick Tapit Trice showed in his most recent race.

Verifying was highly regarded in the Rebel Stakes near the end of February, entering the gate as the 3 to 2 betting choice. This was because prior to that, in his 3-year-old debut in January, he had won easily by five lengths and earned an extremely strong 102 figure. Last fall Verifying proved to fit with the best 2-year-olds when making the lead late in the Champagne Stakes before being passed by winner Blazing Sevens, but he (as well as Blazing Sevens) did not follow through on that promise when finishing sixth of 10 in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Allowed to mature over the winter, Verifying returned to win in his 3-year-old debut, with that 102 figure effort before his fourth place Rebel effort. Although disappointing, the poor quality of that effort might be discounted in favor of his previous top effort. This is because he wasn't as aggressively ridden in the Rebel as he had been previously and never really established a good position, particularly in the critical early stages of the stretch run when he was in traffic and continued to weave in and out behind other horses to find a clear path to run. With a jockey change to Tyler Gaffalione, this half-brother to champion Midnight Bisou ($7.4 million in earnings) may be able to get the lead shortly after the start and lead all the way to redeem himself in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes.

Raise Cain burst on the scene last month in the Gotham Stakes with an upset win at 23 to 1 odds. He had run well when second at the same odds two races prior to that in the Gun Runner Stakes, but after a non-threating fifth in another stakes it appeared to bettors he was not improving. That was not to be the case, as Raise Cain showed a lot of moxie when he rallied from seventh with a quarter mile to go, got completely stopped in traffic, then re-accelerated to forge to the front and draw off with a 91 figure. Since that race, Raise Cain has been working very nicely at Keeneland in the morning and gets the services of Joel Rosario, so can be expected once again to be passing many, if not all, in the stretch run of this race.

The rest of the field, with their best ™ Equibase® Speed Figures, is Blazing Sevens (98), Clear the Air (94), Hayes Strike (91), Mendelssohns March (83), Major Blue (91), Scoobie Quando (94) and Sun Thunder (94).
