Sunday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Features Racing From Belmont, Churchill Downs

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Sunday with racing from Belmont Park and Churchill Downs.

The Cross Country Pick 5 requires bettors to pick the winner of five select races from tracks across the country. The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country with each week featuring a mandatory payout of the net pool. The Cross Country Pick 5, boasting a low 15 percent takeout, offers sequences with races from Belmont Park and partner tracks across the country.

The sequence begins at 3:50 p.m. Eastern in Race 7 from Churchill, a 5 1/2-furlong maiden for 3-year-olds and up. The Eddie Kenneally-trained Wild Thinker has finished on-the-board in his two lifetime outings, most recently earning a field-best 87 Beyer Speed Figure for a runner-up effort sprinting six furlongs on April 16 at Keeneland. Cuore Sacro missed a debut graduation by a head in August at this distance on turf for conditioner Brian Lynch, while the Jeff Engler-trained Smoke Wagon, a $425,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase, makes his debut off a series of works over Turfway Park's synthetic.

Action heads north to Belmont for the second leg [Race 7, 4:08 p.m.], a six-furlong allowance for New York-bred fillies and mares 3-years-old and up. The Brad Cox-trained Luna's Song returns from a more than seven-month layoff after breaking her maiden at second asking in October at Belmont at the Big A. Trainer Bill Morey will hope to see the undefeated Red Moon make it 3-for-3 in her first start outside of Turf Paradise as Miss Stones makes her first start against winners after a first-out maiden score by 5 1/4 lengths on April 29 at Aqueduct Racetrack.

The middle leg will feature a field of nine in Race 8 [4:22 p.m.] at Churchill, a 6 1/2-furlong allowance for 3-year-olds and up. Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen sends out Blue Light for his second try against winners after a 1 1/2-length defeat on April 8 at Keeneland to Squire Creek, who exited that race to finish second in the Gold Fever at Belmont. Two-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Brad Cox saddles impressive debut maiden winner Saudi Crown, who garnered a 97 Beyer for an April 16 maiden score at Keeneland. Sweet Cherry Pie brings another formidable speed figure to the field after earning a 95 for his maiden win on April 14 for trainer Rusty Arnold.

The penultimate leg will see a field of nine in a six-furlong inner turf optional claiming tilt for New York-bred 3-year-olds and up in Race 8 [4:40 p.m.] at Belmont. Rough Draft is undefeated through two starts and will look to continue his winning ways for conditioner David Duggan after a determined April 15 state-bred allowance victory at the Big A. Awesome Native boasts a 3-for-4 in-the-money record for trainer Jorge Abreu, including an allowance conquest in January at the Big A. The multiple stakes-placed Big Engine could provide interest should the race be moved to the main track as he is entered for the main-track only for trainer Linda Rice.

The sequence closes out in Race 9 [4:55 p.m.] from Churchill as 3-year-olds and upward contest at 1 1/16 miles over the turf in a maiden special weight. The overflow field includes Big Elm, who finished a game second in his second lifetime outing and first for conditioner Michael McCarthy on March 17 over the Turfway synthetic. The Brian Michael-trained Now That Ican Rock finished in-the-money in his last two outings while Caroom will look to break through for trainer Wayne Catalano after hitting the board in each of his last three starts.

Australia: Big Fields For Doomben Cup Card

Zaaki seeks to avenge a shock defeat in the 2022 Doomben Cup when he heads a fascinating renewal of the Group 1 feature this Friday night. Zaaki's shot at redemption includes a rematch with last year's surprise winner, Huetor, plus the challenge of overcoming some intriguingly spotted fresh opposition. While America's racing fans lament the size and quality of the Preakness field and some of Pimlico's supporting stakes, the Doomben Cup's 13 entrants make it the smallest field this Friday night at Brisbane's Doomben Racecourse. There were 137 horses (not counting also eligibles) entered across nine races, ensuring great spectacles and unparalleled wagering value. The first post is at 9:43 p.m. Eastern or 6:43 p.m. Pacific.

Regardless of how many Group 1 winners pass through the stables of Annabel Neasham, Zaaki will always hold pride of place in the young trainer's heart. Both English imports, it was Zaaki who put Neasham on the map Down Under. Within a year of attaining her license, Neasham's star was on the rise as Zaaki burst onto the scene with wins during the 2021 “Queensland Winter Carnival” – including the Doomben Cup by a whopping seven lengths.

In last year's renewal, Zaaki could manage only third as the odds-on favorite behind 15-1 winner Huetor. While Huetor has been winless since, Zaaki tuned up for the Doomben Cup by winning the G2 Hollindale Stakes for the third straight year (his 10th stakes victory, pushing his career earnings north of AU$10 million). Huetor ran him to a half-length at the finish, but Zaaki's performance was meritorious after being forced to work hard early in the race from a wide gate. The enduring 8-year-old gelding continues to perform at a high level for a trainer barely into her 30s and is a clear favorite again this year at 6-5.

Splitting Zaaki and Huetor (10-1) in the wagering is an intriguing addition to the field, Kovalica (7-1). The highly promising 3-year-old was scratched from a stakes race last weekend against his own age, due to a hoof abscess. Kovalica recovered quickly and, while his target race is next week's G1 Queensland Derby, trainer Chris Waller has entered him in the Doomben Cup against older horses in a stiff test of his potential. Bookmakers are showing Kovalica and his master trainer great respect (Waller has also entered the mare Atishu, who shares the third line of wagering with Huetor at 10-1).

Several other excellent stakes races adorn Friday night's card, including the highly competitive BRC Sprint (Race 8 at 6-3/4 furlongs), in which the top four horses in wagering are priced between 9-2 and 8-1. The winner will punch a ticket to Queensland's premier race, the AU$3 million Stradbroke Handicap, at seven furlongs on June 9. The last of nine races, The Roses, is a key prep for the the G1 Queensland Oaks on June 2. Brisbane's “Winter Carnival” of racing will see 28 stakes races (18 Graded) contested across the next four Friday nights.

The Doomben card will be broadcast live on FanDuel TV this Friday night (First Post: 9:43 p.m. ET / 6:43 p.m. PT) alongside cards from Rosehill, Newcastle and Belmont. All races will be live-streamed in HD on the new Sky Racing World Appskyracingworld.com and major ADW platforms such as TVG, TwinSpiresXpressbet, NYRABets, WatchandWagerHPIbet, FanDuel and AmWager. Wagering is also available via these ADW platforms. Fans can get free access to live-streaming, past performances, and expert picks on all races at skyracingworld.com.

A native of Brisbane, Australia, Michael Wrona has called races in six countries. Michael's vast U.S. experience includes; race calling at Los Alamitos, Hollywood Park, Arlington and Santa Anita, calling the 2000 Preakness on a national radio network and the 2016 Breeders' Cup on the International simulcast network. Michael also performed a race call voiceover for a Seinfeld episode called The Subway.

Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Features Action From Belmont, Churchill, Monmouth

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday with racing from Belmont Park, Churchill Downs and Monmouth Park.

Saturday's sequence kicks off in Race 8 at 4:22 p.m. Eastern at Churchill Downs with a 5 1/2-furlong turf allowance for fillies and mares led by the stakes-placed Numero Seis, who will make her seasonal debut for trainer Joe Sharp. The Frosted sophomore graduated in September at this distance over the Saratoga Race Course turf and followed 12 days later with a third-place finish in the Untapable at Kentucky Downs. The overflow field includes last-out maiden winners Secret Money for trainer Brendan Walsh and All That for Brad Cox.

Action switches to Monmouth [Race 9, 4:35 p.m.] for the second leg featuring a similar 5 1/2-furlong turf allowance for fillies and mares. The wide-open affair includes the multiple stakes-placed Captainsdaughter, who has banked $350,198 for trainer Russell Cash; the French-bred Anna Karenine for four-time Eclipse Award-winning conditioner Chad Brown; and Michael Dini's Explosive Exchange, who turns back in distance from a pair of placings in one-mile turf tilts at Tampa Bay Downs.

The middle leg will see a field of 11 optional-claimers 3-years-old and up battle seven furlongs over Belmont's Widener turf [Race 10, 5:43 p.m.] featuring the streaking Runningwscissors. The David Jacobson trainee, a 7-year-old New York-bred son of Congaree, has posted back-to-back turf sprint scores led by a last-out open optional-claiming win that garnered a 94 Beyer Speed Figure. Into the Sunrise, a 5-year-old Into Mischief gelding trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, is a four-time turf winner; while King Angelo, who has hit the board in 7-of-10 turf tries, returns to the green for trainer Jorge Abreu.

The penultimate leg returns to Churchill Downs for the Grade 3 Louisville [Race 11, 5:58 p.m.], a 12-furlong turf marathon for older horses that drew a strong field of 11 topped by multiple graded-stakes winning millionaire Tiz the Bomb.

The 4-year-old Hit It a Bomb colt, trained by Kenny McPeek, boasts graded scores in the 2021 Grade 2 Bourbon at Keeneland and last year's Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks over the Turfway Park synthetic. He earned a Grade 1-placing when closing to finish second in the 2021 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. A talented field includes millionaire aspirant Therapist [39-12-4-8 $970,475], a New York-bred who made the grade last out in the Grade 2 Pan American for trainer Michael Maker, besting returning rival Bay Street Money by three-quarters of a length in the 12-furlong test for older horses at Gulfstream Park.

The sequence concludes in Race 11 at 6:15 p.m. as a field of nine maidens 3-years-old and up travel a one-turn mile over Big Sandy which is topped by a pair of Cox-trained contenders in Global Stage and First Money.

Gary and Mary West's Global Stage, a 4-year-old Street Sense colt, will stretch out after posting strong Beyers in a pair of six-furlong sprints at Oaklawn Park [87] and Keeneland [88]. Calumet Farm's First Money, a City of Light sophomore, made his first two starts at Aqueduct Racetrack, finishing a pacesetting third in a one-turn mile maiden before landing a fading fifth in a nine-furlong route last out. The Brown-trained Ocasek will look to let the good times roll at second asking after a good second on debut in March at the Big A to the well-regarded Harrodsburg.

Free Equibase past performances for the Cross Country Pick 5 sequence will be available for download at https://www.nyra.com/belmont/racing/cross-country-wagers.

America's Day at the Races will present daily coverage and analysis of the spring/summer meet at Belmont Park on the networks of FOX Sports. For the complete broadcast schedule, visit https://www.nyra.com/belmont/racing/tv-schedule.
