Weekend Lineup Presented by On Track Thoroughbred Solutions: Los Alamitos, Hong Kong In Spotlight

In one of the quietest weekends of the racing year for graded stakes in North America, Los Alamitos race course in Cypress, Calif., finds itself hosting the lone graded event, the Grade 2 Starlet for 2-year-old fillies – an important fixture that became a staple of the fall-winter meet at Hollywood Park starting in the early 1980s. The Starlet, along with the Hollywood Futurity – a corresponding race for 2-year-old males – was moved to Los Alamitos with the closure of Hollywood Park in 2013.

Just like the Futurity, the Los Alamitos version of the Starlet has been dominated by Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who has won six consecutive renewals since 2017, giving him nine wins overall in the event. Baffert has won seven of the last nine runnings of the Futurity (scheduled at Los Alamitos next week) and 13 overall.

But while the Starlet is this week's lone graded stakes, there is stakes action throughout the country, including nine Louisiana Champions Day events for Louisiana-breds at Fair Grounds on Saturday. The Gulfstream Park championship meet is in full swing with a pair of stakes for 2-year-olds of each sex on Saturday – the Pulpit and Wait a While to be run over the South Florida track's new turf course. Oaklawn's first Saturday of the 2023-'24 meet features the Mistletoe Stakes for fillies and mares and the Ring the Bell Stakes for 3 and up sprinters.  Turfway Park offers the My Charmer on Saturday and Tampa Bay Downs will have two FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes for older runners. Canada's Woodbine is hosting a pair of Ontario-bred stakes on Saturday (La Prevoyante) and Sunday (Steady Growth).

Overseas, the Hong Kong Jockey Club is conducting its major quartet of Group 1 turf stakes on Sunday at Sha Tin, with first post for that card late Saturday night in the Eastern Time Zone of the U.S. An excellent lineup of horses from around the world  has converged on Hong Kong for that annual fixture.

Saturday

7:28 p.m. ET – Grade 2 Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos

A half-dozen juvenile fillies have entered the Grade 2, $200,000 Starlet, and there is no standout in this group going 1 1/16 miles.

The aforementioned Bob Baffert has two strong chances, led by 9-5 morning line favorite Nothing Like You, bidding for her third consecutive victory after three unsuccessful attempts to break her maiden. The Malibu Moon filly is coming off a hard-fought nose victory in the ungraded Desi Arnaz Stakes at Del Mar Nov. 19. She will be ridden by Juan Hernandez.

The other Baffert, listed at 5-2 in the morning line, is the Uncle Mo filly Grazia, who won her debut at Del Mar Nov. 12 by 3 1/4 lengths as the odds-on favorite.  Flavien Prat has the call aboard Grazia.

The lone graded stakes winner in the group is Mark Glatt-trained Chatalas, a daughter of Gun Runner who went gate to wire to win the G2 Chandelier Stakes at Santa Anita Oct. 7. She subsequently finished a troubled ninth behind Just F Y I in the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies after being jostled hard at the start. Antonio Fresu rides.

Two maidens in the race, Richard Mandella-trained Flynn's Chance and Doug O'Neill-trained Pacific Rose,  have shown some ability in their previous races and have every right to improve. The final starter, Great Forty Eight, got it together in her fourth start for Tim Yakteen to exit the maiden ranks at Del Mar Nov. 12.

Starlet entries

Sunday

Night owls will find some familiar names in the four Group 1 events comprising the Hong Kong International Races from Sha Tin in a 10-race program that gets under way at 11:25 p.m. Eastern / 8:25 p.m. Pacific.

Aidan O'Brien is sending an especially solid contingent from Ballydoyle in Ireland, and several Japanese horsemen are taking advantage of the lucrative purses and international prestige of this premiere event. France, the United Kingdom and Singapore are also taking on a home team of Hong Kong-trained runners who are becoming increasingly stronger with each passing year. There are no U.S.-based horses competing this year.

Equibase Analysis: Grazia May Play Role Of ‘Other Baffert’ For Starlet Upset

This Saturday's Grade 2 Starlet Stakes offers the chance for any of six 2-year-old fillies to earn points on the “Road to the Kentucky Oaks” and sets the stage for their 2024 campaigns.

The field is led by Chatalas, who won the G2 Chandelier Stakes in October before a ninth of 12 finish last month in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Another previous stakes winner is Nothing Like You, who captured the Desi Arnaz Stakes last month.

Two of the group of six fillies – Grazia and Great Forty Eight, are hoping to make the jump from maiden winners to stakes winners, which is not as difficult as it may seem at this time of year. The remaining two, Flynn's Chance and Pacific Rose, are both trying for the rare feat of earning their first career wins in a stakes race.

Top contenders:

Grazia is one of two fillies in the field trained by Bob Baffert, who is usually loaded with talented colts and fillies in the fall every year. She won her only start, on November 12, at the shorter distance of six furlongs, and she did so with the maturity of a horse that has a lot of mental ability to go along with physical talent. In that race, Grazia sat in second behind the pacesetter for the first quarter mile, engaged with that horse on the far turn, then burst clear by two lengths with an eighth of a mile to run, before coasting home. The 89 ™ Equibase Speed Figure earned isn't the highest in the field, but we can assume it's going to improve markedly because Grazia is on the same pattern as 2022 Starlet winner Faiza, also trained by Baffert. Faiza had won her only start prior to this race last year, earning an 84 figure, which improved to 92 winning the race. Assuming similar improvement for Grazia, we can expect an effort worthy of a 97 figure which is more than good enough to win this year's Starlet.

That being said, first Grazia has to get by the other Baffert trainee in the field, Nothing Like You, who has won two races in a row. The first of the two was a mile race around two turns in October, with a 90 ™ figure which might have been higher as she won by six and one-half lengths. Next, Nothing Like You cut back in distance to seven furlongs for the Desi Arnaz Stakes, winning by a nose with a strong late rally to improve to a 93 figure. In 2021, Eda won the Starlet (for Baffert) off a win in the Desi Arnaz. She gets the ground saving rail for the Starlet and if she improves by a similar margin as in her last start, Nothing Like You would earn a 96 figure very similar to how fast Grazia might run, leading to a fantastic battle for top honors.

Chatalas proved she belongs at the level when leading from start to finish winning the Chandelier Stakes in October at this mile and one-sixteenth distance. She was jostled hard at the start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies one month later and never found good position, checking in ninth of 12. We can make the case that effort can be forgiven, and that her Chandelier effort is the one she can repeat today. She earned a 90 ™ figure in that race and even though she led all the way, in her debut two races earlier Chatalas rallied strongly from third so she may not be a need the lead type. As such, we can't discount her chances to succeed in this field.

The rest of the field, with their best ™ Equibase Speed Figures, is Flynn's Chance (75), Great Forty Eight (79) and Pacific Rose (86).

Win contenders, in preference/probability order:

Grazia
Nothing Like You
Chatalas

Los Alamitos Thoroughbred Meet To Unveil New Graphic Showing Projected ‘In Play’ Closing Odds

The Los Alamitos Winter Thoroughbred Meet, which opens its six-day season Friday, Dec. 8, will feature a new informational graphic on the track's simulcast broadcast showing projected closing odds for win wagers on selected races based on a mathematical calculation using Will Pays for that given race.

The graphic will be branded at Los Alamitos as the “In Play” Projected Closing Odds, and will be based on Will Pays, particularly Pick 3s and Pick 4s, which are thought to be reliable indicators of a horse's actual closing odds.

During its Winter Thoroughbred Meet, the track will be showing these “In Play” projected closing odds starting with the third race on Friday's opening day card. The “In Play” graphic will be available shortly after the previous race has been run.

“We'll be offering these projected odds on our simulcast feed with an easy-to-read graphic,” said Orlando Gutierrez, the marketing director at Los Alamitos Race Course. “We feel that giving horse players more information is a plus and from there each bettor, individually, can determine whether this information is helpful to their handicapping and wagering practices.”

The Los Alamitos Winter Thoroughbred Meet will open on Friday, Dec. 8 and continue through Sunday, Dec. 17. Racing will be held on a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during the two weeks of racing. The first post each day will be at 12:30 p.m. PT. For more information, please visit LosAlamitos.com
