Sunday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Features Action From Belmont, Monmouth

The New York Racing Association Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Sunday, featuring action from Belmont Park and Monmouth Park.

The Cross Country Pick 5 requires bettors to pick the winner of five select races from tracks across the country. The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country with each week featuring a mandatory payout of the net pool. The Cross Country Pick 5, boasting a low 15 percent takeout, offers sequences with races from Belmont Park and partner tracks across the country.

Sunday's sequence kicks off in Race 5 at 2:29 p.m. Eastern from Monmouth Park with the $100,000 Boiling Springs, a one-mile and 70-yard route for sophomore fillies led by the Chad Brown-trained Shidabhuti.

The Practical Joke bay won her first three career starts, culminating in a victory in the one-mile Busher Invitational in March at Aqueduct Racetrack. She was last seen finishing third in the nine-furlong Grade 3 Gazelle on April 8 at the Big A. She will be challenged by the lightly-raced Seduction, who graduated at second asking last out on February 12 at Gulfstream Park for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher; and the Kentucky-bred Miss New York, who enters from a third-place finish in the Lady's Secret on June 10 at Monmouth.

The second leg will see a full field of 3-year-olds and up sprint 5 1/2-furlongs in a Monmouth turf allowance [Race 7, 3:27 p.m.] featuring the grass debut of New York-bred Etnico for conditioner Jorge Delgado.

The Practical Joke sophomore graduated at second asking in March at Gulfstream Park, but was off-the-board last out in the Mike Lee, a seven-furlong sprint for New York-breds on May 29 at Belmont. The win-shy Just Jeremy, who sports a record of 20-1-3-4 for conditioner William Hogan, Jr., earned a field-best 85 Beyer Speed Figure for a runner-up effort at this distance and course on May 28; while Patriarch Artie boasts a consistent record of 6-1-2-2 over turf for trainer Steven Krebs.

The next two legs shift to Belmont, beginning with a nine-furlong allowance for New York-breds 3-years-old and up over the inner turf [Race 6, 3:42 p.m.] that will see the seasonal debut of Whistler's Honor for conditioner Jorge Abreu.

The 4-year-old Tonalist colt was last seen earning a third-out graduation on July 15 traveling 1 1/16-miles against fellow state-breds over the Saratoga turf. A wide-open affair includes the Christophe Clement-trained Clear Conscience, who closed into a slow pace to finish second last out in a 1 1/16-mile state-bred allowance; and Blame It On Daddy, who stretches out after rallying to finish a close fifth last out in a seven-furlong state-bred sprint on June 9 in his turf debut for trainer Tom Albertrani.

The penultimate leg [Race 7, 4:16 p.m.] will see an open field of fillies and mares contest 1 1/16-miles over the Widener turf for a $50,000 tag as Bernt Again steps up to face winners for the first time after a ninth-out graduation on May 28 at Belmont.

Trained by Dominick Schettino, the Honorable Dillion sophomore earned a 66 Beyer for a 1 1/2-length score over Orange Freeze, who exited that effort to graduate last Friday here. Caironi drops in for a tag as she looks to secure her first win since her October 2021 debut for trainer Mike Miceli; and the late-running Sister Nell will be hoping for a swift pace to chase for conditioner Jose Jimenez.

The sequence closes out at Monmouth Park [Race 9, 4:24 p.m.] with a 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint for 3-year-olds and up featuring the consistent Biz Biz Buzz for trainer Michael Trombetta.

The 4-year-old Fed Biz gelding boasts a record of 13-2-4-3 and enters from a runner-up effort in a similar turf sprint on June 11 at Monmouth. First-time gelding Detroit City makes his first appearance since an off-the-board effort in a Keeneland turf allowance in April for trainer Jack Sisterson. The 4-year-old Dialed In chestnut earned a field-best 92 Beyer in his seasonal debut when capturing a five-furlong synthetic sprint on January 21 at Gulfstream Park.

Racing cancellations due to poor air quality caused by Canadian wildfires continued on Friday, with Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., Woodbine in Toronto, Canada, and Laurel Park in Laurel, Md., all announcing their live racing programs have been called off.

Following is the statement from NYRA:

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) has canceled live racing Friday at Belmont Park due to a rapid decline in air quality late this morning.

This decision was made in consultation with the New York State Equine Medical Director, NYRA management and veterinary staff in the best interests of the safety of all participants.

The indoor facilities at Belmont Park and Aqueduct Racetrack will remain open for simulcasting on Friday. Wagering is also available via the NYRA Bets app, available for download today on iOS and Android at www.NYRABets.com.

Live racing is scheduled to resume on Saturday at Belmont Park with a 10-race card, featuring the Grade 3, $200,000 Dwyer in Race 6 and the Grade 2, $250,000 John A. Nerud in Race 9. First post is 1:05 p.m. Eastern.

Following is the statement from Woodbine:

Woodbine Entertainment has announced today's card of live racing at Woodbine Racetrack is cancelled due to poor air quality.

Environment Canada's air quality index for Toronto is listed as 'High Risk' and is expected to remain at this level throughout Friday. Woodbine's decision to cancel comes through consultation with the HBPA and is consistent with the AGCO's air quality guidelines.

Woodbine will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as required.

The next card of live racing is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 1:10 p.m.

Laurel Park announced its cancellation via a Tweet from the Maryland Jockey Club account:

According to a 9 a.m. ET reading on the Airnow.gov website, the air quality index (AQI) reading for Laurel, Md., was 153, considered “unhealthy” by the Environmental Protection Agency. It was as high as 197 on Thursday at 1 p.m., according to Airnow.gov.

Following is a statement from the Maryland Jockey Club:

Due to poor air quality in the Mid-Atlantic region caused by smoke from Canadian wildfires, the Maryland Jockey Club has canceled Friday's live program at Laurel Park.

The entire 10-race program has been moved, as is, to Thursday, July 6, with a post time of 12:25 p.m.

Laurel will remain open for simulcasting.

Live racing will resume Saturday to kick off the month of July featuring 11 stakes worth $1.075 million in purses.

There will be carryovers of $11,438.28 in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 and $10,380.34 in the $1 Jackpot Super High Five. The Rainbow 6 sequence spans Races 5-10 and includes all three of Saturday's stakes – the $100,000 Concern for 3-year-olds sprinting seven furlongs on the main track (Race 9), $100,000 Laurel Dash for 3-year-olds and up (Race 8) and $75,000 Jameela for Maryland-bred/sired fillies and mares 3 and older (Race 6), both scheduled for six furlongs on the Fort Marcy turf course.

Stakes winners Coffeewithchris, exiting the 148th Preakness Stakes (G1) May 20, and Prince of Jericho, second in the Chick Lang (G3) on the Preakness undercard, will renew their rivalry in the Concern. Mid Day Image will be favored to run his win streak to four in the Laurel Dash over fellow stakes winners Witty, Grateful Bred and Smokin' Jay.

Spun Glass will attempt to defend her title in the Jameela and make trainer Mike Trombetta the first to win it three straight years, but will face challenges from stablemate Hollywood Walk as well as Can the Queen, whose three career stakes wins have come at historic Pimlico Race Course.

Gulfstream: Mandatory Payout Of Rainbow 6 Pool Set For Friday’s Card

A mandatory payout of the Rainbow 6 pool is scheduled for Friday's program at Gulfstream Park, where the popular multi-race wager has gone unsolved for nine racing days following a jackpot hit for $263,655 June 4.

The carryover jackpot pool stands a $149,053.69 heading into Friday's card. The Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is expected to grow near $1 million following betting on Friday.

The Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 3-8, kicked off by a 5 ½-furlong bottom claiming race for fillies and mares, including a pair of dropdowns for trainer Georgina Baxter in Rasmalai and Shall Return. Mabee Luckynwild draws the rail for trainer Kelsey Danner.

Race 4, a 5 ½-furlong $12,500 claimer on Tapeta for fillies and mares that have not won two races, drew an evenly matched field that will be a 'spread' race for some Rainbow 6 bettors. Mary Eppler-trained Bullock, a dropdown with speed in a race packed with closers, and Kent Sweezey-trained Greek Mojo, a winner on dirt last time out, should have popular support.

Terri Pompay-trained Smart Striker, who will make his first start since finishing second in the June 10 Not Surprising Stakes, may well be a popular Rainbow 6 'single' in Friday's Race 5, a mile-and-70-yard race on Tapeta for Florida-bred 3-year-olds.Pompay has 28 starters going into the week during the summer meet and is 5-10-6.

A seven-furlong maiden optional claimer follows in Race 6. Ralph Nicks-trained Belts 'n Brooks, out of a half sister to Grade 1 millionaire Jackson Bend, is set for his 2023 debut after showing some talent in his 2-year-old season; Victor Barboza Jr.-trained Power Humor, who produced a promising third-place finish against better last time out; and Jena Antonucci-trained Danzig Chips, a game second in his second career start June 2; are among the leading contenders.

Trainer Peter Walder will have two shots at the 1000-win milestone in Friday's Race 7, a mile optional claiming allowance for 3-year-olds and up on the main track. Slim Slow Slider, a winner two starts back in a mile optional claiming allowance, and Big Daddy Dave, who finished second at a mile in his most recent start, will represent Walder in an eight-horse field. Big Data enters off a couple second-place finishes for trainer Michael Lerman.

A $12,500 maiden claimer for 3-year-olds and up on Tapeta closes out the Rainbow 6 sequence in Race 8. Jose D'Angelo-trained Emergency Response returns following a very game second-place finish against slightly tougher in his Tapeta debut. Amador Sanchez-trained Green Millennium, a son of Curlin, returns as a gelding after racing against better last season. Joe Orseno-trained Nyquest Nix makes his second start off a long layoff in an eight-horse field.

On mandatory-payout days, the entire Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is paid out to the bettor or bettors with the most winners in the wager's six-race sequence. The carryover jackpot is usually only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool usually goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winner, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
