Del Mar Resumes With ‘Classic Betting Menu’; $1 Million Pick 6 Guarantee For Opener

With the notable exception of its brand-new Opening Day $1-million guarantee for a single ticket Pick Six winner, Del Mar's 2023 betting menu will look quite familiar to those who have played the seaside track over the past several years when it begins its 84th season this Friday.

As per usual, the wagering starts with the traditional Win/Place/Show bets and extends out to five different multi-race exotic offerings – the Early Pick Four, the Late Pick Four, the Early Pick Five, the Late Pick Five and the Pick Six.

In all there are 15 different ways to invest in the daily programs, which will range from eight to 11 races on various afternoons throughout the eight-week session.

The rich Opening Day Pick Six guarantee is expected to stir early interest in the track's popular wager, which can be played for as little as 20¢. In addition, the bet will have several high-interest “mandatory payout” afternoons that will be announced once the race meet is up and running.

“It's basically our classic betting menu which has proven extremely popular with our fans,” said Del Mar's director of mutuels, Bill Navarro. “The Opening Day Pick Six guarantee for $1-million will fire things up right away and we're looking forward to another season of action aplenty over the course of the summer.”

Several of the track's multi-race bets were lowered from a $1 price to 50¢ in 2021 and that will continue this year. They are the Super High 5 – available on the day's last race; the early Pick Four (starting with Race 2); the Late Pick Four on the last four races of the day, and the Late Pick Five (available on the last five races of the afternoon).

Further, there again will be a Win/Place/Show Parlay available for a minimum of two races and a maximum of six. It is a $2 bet.

Besides the Pick Six, the wager that draws the most buzz from the racing crowd is the Late Pick Four. The bet has regularly registered $1-million-plus pools on weekends, a sweet prize for players who are willing to take a swing.

The full array of Del Mar bets is a follows: $2 Win, Place and Show (all races): $1 Exacta (all); $2 Quinella (all); $2 Rolling Doubles (all except last); $1 Rolling Pick 3 (all except last two); $1 Superfecta (10¢ minimum – all); $1 Place Pick All (starts w/Race 1 or 2); 50¢ Super High 5 (last); 20¢ Pick Six (last six); 50¢ Players' Pick 5 (first five and last five); 50¢ Pick 4 (Races 2 thru 5 and last four), and $2 Win-Place-Show Parlay (all races but last).

Del Mar will open its season with a three-day weekend (July 21, 22, 23), then have five four-day weeks (Thursday through Sunday), followed by a five-day week (including Labor Day Monday, September 4), then finally finish with a Friday-through-Sunday weekend (September 8, 9 and 10). First post on most days will be 2 p.m.

$109,629 Pick 6 Carryover On Day Two Of Saratoga Meet

Friday's card at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., will be bolstered by a Pick 6 carryover of $109,629 after the multi-race wager went unsolved on Thursday's 10-race Opening Day program.

The $1 Pick 6 returned $1,218 to bettors who selected 5-of-6 winners correctly.

The sequence kicked off in Race 5, a nine-furlong claimer for older horses on the main track, when Flavien Prat piloted Dust Devil [No. 2, $5.70] to a sixth career score for trainer Patrick Reynolds.

In Race 6, Christophe Clement saddled Merrylegs Farm's New York homebred Yarrow [No. 7, $8.60] to victory in a 5 1/2-furlong state-bred allowance for 3-year-olds and up on the Mellon turf. Manny Franco piloted the Lookin At Lucky gelding.

Under guidance from Hall of Famer John Velazquez, Windylea Farm's Into Happiness [No. 1, $16] won first off the claim for trainer Mark Hennig in Race 7 – a seven-furlong starter allowance for 3-year-olds and up on the main track.

My Sea Cottage [No. 4, $5.60*], trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse and ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr., earned his third triumph in Race 8 – a one-mile starter allowance for 3-year-olds and up on the inner turf.

Lee Pokoik's Becky's Joker [No. 2, $44.40] won at first asking in the Grade 3 Schuylerville [Race 9], springing a 21-1 upset for trainer Gary Contessa with Hall of Famer Javier Castellano aboard.

With six horses covered in the final leg in Race 10, the Phil Antonacci-trained Thundara [No. 14, $18] triggered the carryover and provided Ortiz, Jr. his second win of the day.

Friday's Pick 6 will kick off in Race 5 at 3:26 p.m. Eastern and includes the $150,000 Coronation Cup in Race 9. First post for the 10-race card is 1:10 p.m.

Equibase Analysis: Triple Trea Gets Slight Nod in Wide-Open Sanford Stakes

The $175,000 Grade 3 Sanford Stakes is the start of the 2-year-old stakes season at historic Saratoga Race Course and features a field of 10, of which nine won their most recent races. None in the field has run this six-furlong distance to date and only one has won a stakes. That one is Gold Sweep, who drew off by nine lengths in the Tremont Stakes last month. Yo Yo Candy finished third in the Tremont after winning one month earlier in his debut. Seven of the 10 won their only starts and some of those efforts were quite impressive. That group consists of Call the Cavalry, Dickens, Factor U and Me In, His Rights, Jive, Market Street and Triple Trea. The other horse that has raced two times is Ramming Speed, who powered off to a four-length win just 12 days ago in his second career start.

 Top contenders:

Although Gold Sweep has a stakes win under his belt I am going to start instead with Triple Trea as the top contender in this year's Sanford. A Kentucky bred son of Bolt d'Oro, Triple Trea won his only start on the all-weather track at Woodbine but I think he has what it takes to run good enough to win on the conventional dirt surface at Saratoga. That win on June 4 was impressive on two counts. First, Triple Trea ran in his debut as if he had run before, showing a lot of ability to relax and respond to his jockey by sitting in sixth of eight early, then rolling by the field late after going five paths wide on the far turn. The effort earned a pretty decent 80 Equibase Speed Figure, which can be improved upon off the experience of a race.

The second reason that June 4 race was indicative of a competitive effort in the Sanford is it has already turned out to be a productive “key” race by virtue of the fact both the runner-up and fifth-place finishers came back to win their next starts, and the third finisher finished second in his next outing. Getting top jockey Luis Saez, and with a number of horses in this race likely to want the lead from the start, perhaps running too fast early to have the staying power late to hold off a closer, I think Triple Trea can pass the tiring pacesetters late to win.

Gold Sweep lost in his May debut by a neck and showed enough ability that trainer Steve Asmussen entered him in the Tremont Stakes for his second career start on June 11. Gold Sweep did not disappoint in the Tremont as he rallied three paths wide on the turn before drawing off by nine lengths in handy fashion. His sire, Speightstown, is known for producing 2-year-old stakes winners, such as Andiamo a Firenze, who was third in the 2022 Sanford and who won the Funny Cide Stakes later in the season at Saratoga. Demonstrating how 2-year-olds can improve from one start to the next, Gold Sweep went from an 88 figure in his debut to a 94 figure in the Tremont and an even better effort could be forthcoming in this situation.

Ramming Speed may come in under the radar for most bettors because he's been running at Presque Isle Downs and on an all-weather surface but based on his most recent race just 12 days ago he has the potential to post the slight upset. In his debut on June 14, Ramming Speed rallied four paths wide for second, then just 19 days later improved markedly to win by four lengths. In that race Ramming Speed showed good maturity because, after breaking sharply, jockey Gaddiel Martinez allowed the horse to drop back to third and relax, before going around horses on the turn to draw off to an easy win. The 65 figure was much lower than most of the rest of the Sanford field earned recently, but the effort was impressive. Furthermore, the turnaround in racing just 12 days after his most recent race seems not to be a problem as his win on July 3 came just 19 days after his debut.

The rest of the field, with their best representative Equibase Speed Figures, is Call the Cavalry (86), Dickens (82), Factor U and Me In (77), His Rights (74), Jive (80), Market Street (78) and Yo Yo Candy (76).
