Life Is Good, 5-1, Lowest-Priced Horse In Kentucky Derby Future Wager’s Opening Pool

With the Kentucky Derby still 22 weeks away, the pari-mutuel field of “All Other 3-Year-Old Colts and Geldings” closed as the 6-5 favorite in Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) and the Bob Baffert-trained Life Is Good was the 5-1 second choice.

Life Is Good, who won his Nov. 22 debut at Del Mar by 9 ½ lengths for the record-equaling six-time Derby-winning trainer, edged Breeders' Cup Juvenile (GI) winner Essential Quality, who closed at 8-1 in the betting. Other horses who attracted interest from bettors: Hopeful (GI) and Champagne (GI) winner Jackie's Warrior (18-1); Nyquist Stakes winner Highly Motivated (18-1); and Saturday's Kentucky Jockey Club (GII) winner Keepmeinmind (19-1).

Total handle for the Nov. 26-29 KDFW pool – the first of five scheduled wagering pools in advance of the 147^th running of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (GI) on Saturday, May 1 – was $249,331 ($191,984 in the Win pool and $57,347 in Exactas).

Inaugurated in 1999, the Kentucky Derby Future Wager has been offered for a 23^rdconsecutive year, but this marks just the eighth time that Churchill Downs has hosted a KDFW pool on closing weekend of its Fall Meet.

This year's early Derby betting menu also included the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager, which, for the sixth consecutive year, provided bettors with a unique opportunity to wager on select breeding stars and their entire crop of juveniles with the hope of winning next year's Kentucky Derby.

Into Mischief and “All Other Sires” attracted the most attention from bettors. Into Mischief, the sire of Life Is Good and Highly Motivated among others, closed as the 4-1 favorite ahead of “All Other Sires” at 5-1 and progeny by Tapit at 6-1.

Total betting on the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager was a record $47,567 ($33,269 in the Win pool and $14,298 in the Exactas).

The KDFW and Sire Future Wager combined to handle $296,898 compared to $397,394 in 2019 and $291,313 in 2018.

The other Future Wager dates are tentatively set for Jan. 22-24 (Pool 2), Feb. 12-14 (Pool 3), March 5-7 (Pool 4) and March 26-28 (Pool 5). The lone Kentucky Oaks Future Wager will coincide with Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 4 on March 5-7.

Timothy Yohler Wins Del Mar Fall Challenge Handicapping Contest

Timothy Yohler of Fisher, Ind., scored huge in the last race to win the Del Mar Fall Challenge handicapping contest. Yohler vaulted into the lead with large exacta and trifecta wagers turning his final $1,500 in bankroll into $30,180.

In addition to Yohler's bankroll winnings, he receives $35,000 in cash and a $10,000 2021 Breeders Cup Betting Challenge (BCBC) entry.

Second place finisher Christy Moore ended with a bankroll of $24,840 and a cash prize of $19,000. Kevin Bogart finished third good for $7,500 in prizes. Both Christy and Kevin also receive $10,000 BCBC entries for next year's Breeders Cup held at Del Mar.

The Challenge buy-in was $4,000 with $3,000 going to the player starting bankroll and $1,000 to the prize pool which offered $100,000 in total prizes.

Multiple Carryovers On Saturday’s Fall Festival Of Racing Program At Laurel

There will be carryovers in the 20-cent Rainbow 6, 50-cent Late Pick 5 and $1 Super Hi-5 wagers for Saturday's Fall Festival of Racing program at Laurel Park in Laurel, Md., featuring six stakes races worth $600,000 in purses.

First race post time is 12:25 p.m. ET.

No one had all six winners in Friday's 20-cent Rainbow 6, growing the carryover jackpot to $15,053.51 for Saturday, spanning Races 4-9. Tickets with five of six winners each returned $197.92.

The Late Pick 5, offering an industry-low 12 percent takeout, also went unsolved to produce a carryover of $3,910.14. Tickets with four of five winners were worth $100.25.

Saturday's opener will feature a carryover of $8,819.04 in the Super Hi-5.

$347,136 Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool, Mandatory Payout In Gulfstream Park West Finale

A mandatory payout of the 20-cent Rainbow 6 pool will highlight the closing-day program at Gulfstream Park West Saturday.

A jackpot pool of $347.136.72 will be carried over to Saturday's card after the popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the 17th consecutive racing program Friday.

Gulfstream hosts and analysts Jason Blewitt and Ron Nicoletti look at the races in Saturday's sequence, and they have a difference of opinion on some of them.

The Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot is usually only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool usually goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool. However, on mandatory-payout days, the entire pool is paid out to the bettor or bettors with the most winners in the six-race sequence.

Mandatory payouts of the Late Pick 5 and the last-race Super Hi-5 are also scheduled.

Saturday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 5-10.

Zayas (Jockey) Crichton (Trainer) Seek to Wrap Up Titles
Edgard Zayas heads into Saturday's final card at Gulfstream West with a 41-38 edge over Emisael Jaramillo in the jockey's race. Zayas has been named to ride 10 horses, including two main-track-only entrants, Saturday. Jaramillo is scheduled to ride in seven races, including an also-eligible entrant. Miguel Vasquez, who took closing weekend off, completed the meet with 39 winners.

Rohan Crichton, who is seeking his first U.S. training title, holds a 19-16 edge defending champion Saffie Joseph Jr., going into Saturday's card. Crichton has two horses entered for the last GPW program, while Joseph has three horses entered. Antonio Sano, who has 15 winners, has five horses entered Saturday.

Crichton, who saddled a pair of winners Friday, also holds a 6-5 edge over Paradise Farms Corp. for the owner's title.
