Weekend Lineup: 2021 Preps For Kentucky Derby, Oaks Get Under Way

One year ago, an Into Mischief colt with just a maiden victory to his credit began his march toward glory in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby and, eventually, the G1 Breeders' Cup Classic and a likely Horse of the Year title. The colt, Authentic, scored by 7 3/4 lengths in the G3 Sham Stakes as the 6-5 favorite for trainer Bob Baffert.

This year, another son of the Spendthrift Farm stallion trained by Baffert will make his sophomore debut in Saturday's Sham as an even heavier favorite. Life Is Good, who scored in his debut on Nov. 22 at Del Mar by 9 1/2 lengths, was made the 2-5 favorite as he faces four others (including a stablemate) in the one-mile Sham, a race that will be worth 10-4-2-1 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby to the top four finishers.

Santa Anita will also be offering a qualifying points race for the Kentucky Oaks in Sunday's G2 Santa Ynez Stakes for newly turned 3-year-old fillies. Baffert holds the aces there, with four of the seven runners entered from his stable.

Here's a brief look at the weekend's graded stakes (all times Eastern):

Friday, Jan. 1

6:32 p.m. – $200,000 Joe Hernandez Stakes at Santa Anita

The new 6 1/2-furlong turf chute gets used in this G2 sprint for older runners and this race looks wide open with trainer Peter Miller and Doug O'Neill each having a formidable duo. Miller starts defending Hernandez winner Texas Wedge (when the race was at 5 1/2 furllongs) and recent Churchill Downs $62,500 claim Hembree, a turf veteran with seven lifetime wins from 39 starts. O'Neill has Blitzkrieg, winner of the G3 American at a mile, and the always dangerous Wildman Jack. Don't overlook John Sadler-trained Chaos Theory, who usually comes flying late.

Saturday, Jan. 2

6:35 p.m. – $200,000 San Gabriel Stakes at Santa Anita

Count Again showed a strong stretch kick winning the G2 Seabiscuit Handicap at Del Mar Nov. 29 in his Southern California debut for Phil D'Amato after a solid season north of the border for trainer Gail Cox at Woodbine, where he won the G2 Singspiel. Longshot players might like Cleopatra's Strike, a close second in this race in both 2019 and 2020 when trained by D'Amato. The 8-year-old Smart Strike gelding was claimed for $62,500 last out by trainer Bob Hess Jr., who gives the mount to the comebacking Hall of Fame rider Kent Desormeaux.

7:05 p.m. – $100,000 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita

The Into Mischief colt Life Is Good earned a 91 Beyer Speed Figure in his debut at Del Mar going 6 1/2 furlongs, putting him head and shoulders in that category above his four rivals in here. But this race goes around two turns, and until a horse tries stretching out, you never know whether they can get the added distance.John Shirreffs-trained Parnelli does have two-turn experience and appears to have the bet upset chance.

Sunday, Jan. 3

7:00 p.m. – $200,000 Santa Ynez Stakes at Santa Anita

One of four Baffert entries, Kalypso was overtaken in deep stretch by stablemate Varda last out in the G1 Starlet at Los Alamitos after inheriting the lead when a third Baffert runner, heavy favorite Princess Noor, was suddenly pulled up. Kalypso set the pace that day and drops back to seven furlongs here, a distance the Brody's Cause filly might prefer. Kentucky Oaks points (10-4-2-1) to the top four finishers.

Happy New Year! Gulfstream Puts $900,000 Guarantee On Rainbow 6 Jackpot

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $900,000 on Friday's New Year's Day program at Gulfstream Park.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the seventh racing day in a row Thursday, when multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $2,784.24.

There will also be a Super Hi-5 carryover of $7,107.47.

The jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Friday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 6-11, including the $75,000 Janus in Race 9, the $75,000 Cash Run in Race 10 and the $75,000 Abundantia in Race 11.

Imprimis, who's stretch bid in the Nov. 7 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) was dramatically shut off, is slated to return in the Janus, a five-furlong turf sprint for 4-year-olds and up. The Joe Orseno-trained 7-year-old is 4-for-4 over the Gulfstream turf course. The multiple graded stakes-winning son of Broken Vow has been installed as the 9-5 morning-line favorite over Extravagant Kid, the fourth-place finisher in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint who is rated at 2-1.

Undefeated Shea D Summer will face open company for the first time in the Cash Run, a mile stakes for 3-year-old fillies. The Carlos David-trained daughter of Summer Frost has won her only two starts, including the Juvenile Fillies at Gulfstream Park West, against Florida-bred fillies. Gladys, a full sister to Rachael Alexandra who broke her maiden last time out at Gulfstream Park West, will return in the Cash Run.

Jakarta, who captured the Claiming Crown Distaff Dash last time out, will seek her third victory in as many starts over the Gulfstream turf in the Abundantia, a five-furlong turf sprint for older fillies and mares.

WHO'S HOT:  Trainer Bill Mott and jockey Junior Alvarado teamed for back-to-back victories in Race 5 and 6. Miss Tapirado ($12.40), a 3-year-old daughter of Tapit who cost $1.3 million at auction, captured her turf debut in Race 5, a mile maiden special weight race for fillies and mares. Sir Ollie ($13.40), a son of Quality Road, made a late stretch bid to capture his debut in Race 6, a six-furlong maiden special weight race race for 2-year-olds.

Alvarado, who has returned to winter at Gulfstream for the first time in several years, came right back to win Race 7 aboard John Kimmel-trained Unicorn Sally ($12) and won Race 8 for Mott with New York Girl ($6.20), a 3-year-old, Irish-bred daughter of New Approach making her U.S. debut.

Stronach 5 Includes Pair Of New Year’s Day Stakes From Gulfstream

Breeze Easy, LLC's Imprimis and DARRS Inc.'s Extravagant Kid, both coming out of the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1), go to post in the $75,000 The Janus, one of two stakes that make up Friday's popular Stronach 5.

The Stronach 5, featuring races from Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park and Laurel Park as well as an industry-low 12-percent takeout, will begin at approximately 3:55 ET.

All-Star Ticket: https://www.xbtv.com/video/stronach-5/stronach-5-all-star-ticket-for-january-1st-2021/

The sequence begins with Laurel's eighth race, a starter optional claimer at 5 ½ furlongs for 4-year-olds and up that drew a field of 10 including a tepid favorite in Kieron Magee's Belle Tapisserie, claimed Nov. 27 for $25,000.

The action heads to Gulfstream for the second leg of the Stronach 5, The Janus at five furlongs on the turf.  Imprimis, trained by Joe Orseno, will be making his first start since being steadied hard as the third betting choice in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) Nov. 7 at Keeneland. The 7-year-old gelding has earned $759.948 with victories in the Shakertown (G2) and Runhappy Turf Sprint (G3).

Extravagant Kid also comes out of the Breeders' Cup Turf, having finished fourth beaten just a length. Trained by Brendan Walsh, Extravagant Kid has earned nearly $1 million and is multiple graded-stakes placed. Prior to the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint Extravagant Kid finished second in the Woodford (G2) at Keeneland.

The action swings back to Laurel for the third leg, Laurel's Race 9, a maiden claimer for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 mile. Rye Street, claimed last time out by Anthony Farrier, is the 5-2 choice. Leading trainer Claudio Gonzalez will saddle the 3-1 second choice in Lady Fox.

Santa Anita's third race, a competitive maiden special weight event at six furlongs on the turf, will serve as the fourth leg in the sequence. Translate, a 4-year-old daughter of Tonalist who's the 9-5 favorite, has finished second in all three of her previous starts, all at Belmont Park. Shezaghost, a 4-year-old daughter by Ghostzapper, makes her debut for trainer Mike Puype.

The Stronach 5 wraps up at Gulfstream with the $75,000 Cash Run for 3-year-old fillies at a mile. Shea D Summer is undefeated in two starts, including the Juvenile Fillies Sprint at Gulfstream West in November. Lucifers Lair, a daughter of Quality Road, goes to post for leading trainer Todd Pletcher. The filly broke her maiden in her debut at Saratoga before finishing a well-beaten fifth in the Adirondack (G2). Arindel's Quinoa Tifah won the Our Dear Peggy over a sloppy Gulfstream track in September before finishing fourth in the Juveniles Fillies Turf.

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.
