Gulfstream Guarantees Friday’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot At $400,000

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $400,000 Friday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the third racing day in a row following Saturday's mandatory payout. Multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $1,033.46 Thursday.

The jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Thursday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 5-10, including a well-stocked maiden special weight race for 4-year-olds and up in Race 6. Perennial Championship Meet training titlist Todd Pletcher is scheduled to saddle a pair of starters, including Nocturnal, who has been idle since finishing second behind stablemate Dr Post in his debut March 29 at Gulfstream. Dr. Post went on to win the Unbridled Stakes at Gulfstream before finishing second in the Belmont Stakes (G1) and third in the Haskell (G1) at Monmouth.

Pletcher is also slated to saddle Bold Agenda, a son of Candy Ride who was bought at auction for $700,000, for his debut in the mile race. Chad Brown-trained Brazillionaire, a son of Candy Ride that cost $875,000 at auction, is set for his second start and first race with blinkers after a late-fade sixth in his debut at Churchill.

WHO'S HOT: Two-time defending Championship Meet titlist Irad Ortiz Jr. rode two winners Thursday, scoring with back-to-back winners Hero Tiger ($4.20) in Race 6 and Don't Get Khozy ($4.20) in Race 7.

Paco Lopez doubled aboard First Investor ($28.40) in Race 1 and Monte Ne ($6.40) in Race 4. Tyler Gaffalione also made a pair of visits to the winner's circle after scoring aboard Elliereeseaston ($4.60) in Race 5 and Tropicat ($18) in Race 8.

Low Takeout Stronach 5 Features Full Fields From Four Different Tracks

Full, competitive fields and coast-to-coast racing in under an hour will be delivered by Friday's Stronach 5.

The popular wager that continually shows a strong return on investment and an industry-low 12-percent takeout will feature races from Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields when it kicks off at 3:55 ET.

The Stronach 5 begins with Laurel's eighth race, a 5 ½-furlong claiming event for fillies and mares. Scamper Along, a 4-year-old filly who broke her maiden at Penn National, is the 5-2 morning-line favorite. Gulfstream's eighth race will serve as the second leg of the sequence. A wide-open, claiming event for fillies and mares at six furlongs brings together a field of 12 led by tepid 3-1 favorite Galt Jak. Laurel's ninth race, a maiden $10,000 claimer for 3-year-olds, serves as the third leg of the sequence. There's lots of options in the 12-horse field with Shepherd's Will dropping in class after a short layoff, plus 5-2 favorite Uncle Cecil, and first-time starters from the barn of Tim Keefe and Ferris Allen III.

We head west for the final two legs of the Stronach 5 beginning with Santa Anita's third race, a maiden special weight event at six furlongs on the turf for 4-year-olds and up. Fat Stacks, second in his debut at Del Mar in November, is the lukewarm morning-line favorite. Golden Gate's third race concludes the Stronach 5, a maiden claimer at six furlongs. The 12-horse field has five first-time starters and Mr. Artistic as the 5-2 choice and Colavito at 3-1.

The Stronach 5 All-Star Ticket is only $72 this week.

Van Dyke, Rispoli Handed Days Over Repeated Whip Use Infractions

California riders Drayden Van Dyke and Umberto Rispoli will each be serving three-day suspensions for repeatedly violating new whip rules in the state. Both riders have been fined for previous whip rule violations, which now prohibit jockeys from hitting horses overhanded, hitting more than six times in a race, or hitting more than two times in succession.

Rispoli will serve his days Jan. 16, 17, and 18 for the latest offense in the fifth race at Santa Anita on Jan. 8. Van Dyke will serve his days Jan. 17, 18, and 22 after violating the rules in the third race the following day.

It is the fourth offense related to whip use in 60 days for both riders.

Jockeys at Santa Anita have spoken out against the rules, which were approved by the California Horse Racing Board in late 2020. Hall of Famer Mike Smith took up for his fellow riders, raising questions about the safety of under-handed whip use and also voicing concerns about the fairness of whip limitations to horseplayers.

Read Smith's open letter to the CHRB on the issue here.
