Gulfstream: Jouster Beats Rachel Alexandra’s Full Sister; Brown Unveils Promising Filly; $1.2 Million Jackpot Guaranteed Wednesday

Starlight Racing's Jouster remained undefeated on grass Sunday at Gulfstream Park, scoring by 1 ¾ lengths over Gladys, a full sister to 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, in the Race 7 feature at the Hallandale Beach, Fla., track. The race was a 1 1/16-mile optional claiming allowance on turf for 3-year-old fillies..

The Todd Pletcher-trained daughter of Noble Mission, who scored a front-running 8 ¾-length maiden victory in her Jan. 10 turf debut at Gulfstream, again showed the way before holding Gladys at bay through the stretch to prevail as the 1-10 favorite. Jouster, a $360,000 purchase at the Fasig-Tipton New York Saratoga Select Yearling sale, ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.56 over a 'good' course after setting fractions of 25:02 and 48:07 for the first half-mile, 1:10.99 for six furlongs and 1:35.57 for a mile.

“I was a little concerned running on soft ground today because she handled the firm ground so well last time. But she dug in and found a little more when she had to despite going quick internal fractions,” Pletcher said. “She got the job done. She's 2-for-2 now on the grass, so we'll try again.”

Dede McGehee's Gladys, who was making her turf debut Sunday, chased Jouster throughout the entry-level optional claiming allowance and made up some ground in the stretch. The Kelsey Danner-trained Gladys, who broke her maiden Oct. 25 at Gulfstream Park West before finishing off the board in the Jan. 1 Cash Run at Gulfstream, was wearing blinkers for the first time for her turf debut.

Trainer Chad Brown unveiled a most promising 3-year-old filly in Sunday's Race 6, a six-furlong sprint won by Peter Brant's Boston Post Road with a thoroughly professional performance. The debuting daughter of Quality Road pressed the early pace before drawing clear by three lengths under Paco Lopez.

Purchased for $525,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale, the long-striding Boston Post Road ($8.20) ran six-furlongs in 1:11.68.

Wednesday's Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool Guaranteed at $1.2 Million
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $1.2 million Wednesday at Gulfstream Park.

The Rainbow 6 went unsolved for the 10th straight racing day Sunday, when multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $88.36.

The jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 From Aqueduct, Tampa Bay Downs Pays $872.50

Saturday's Cross Country Pick 5, featuring stakes action from New York's Aqueduct Racetrack and Tampa Bay Downs in Florida, paid $872.50 for selecting all five winners for the 50-cent wager. The sequence's total pool was $123,055.

Aqueduct started the wager when Dublinornothin upset favorite Mabel Island in a seven-furlong allowance race for New York-bred fillies and mares 4-years-old and up. The Eduardo Jones trainee rallied from fourth in the stretch under jockey Andre Worrie to post a half-length victory. Dublinornothin returned $19 on a $2 win wager.

Curlin's Catch started the sequence's stakes portion with a 4 1/2-length score in the Suncoast for 3-year-old fillies going a mile and 40 yards on the Tampa Bay main track. Conditioned by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, Curlin's Catch sat off the pace before drawing away under Antonio Gallardo as the favorite. She paid $5.60.

Aqueduct hosted a Kentucky Derby prep race with the Grade 3, $250,000 Withers in Race 8, which Risk Taking won by 3 3/4 lengths. Risk Taking, trained by Chad Brown, was expertly ridden by Eric Cancel, who earned his third career graded stakes win as his charge picked up 10 qualifying points for the “Run for the Roses.” The favorite returned $5.80.

Just minutes later, Brown added another stakes win with a favorite owned by Klaravich Stables, as Counterparty Risk outkicked New York Girl by one length to win the Grade 3 Endeavour at Tampa Bay. Piloted by Hall of Famer John Velazquez, Counterparty Risk won the 1 1/16-mile turf contest for fillies and mares 4-years-old and up, paying $3.80.

Tampa Bay concluded the sequence with Candy Man Rocket winning the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis for sophomores going 1 1/16 miles on the main track in a race that, like the Withers, awarded 10-4-2-1 Derby qualifying points to the top-four finishers. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott's Candy Man Rocket defeated Nova Rags by one length under jockey Junior Alvarado. The 3-1 selection returned $8.20.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on track, on ADW platforms, and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool.

Mandatory Rainbow 6 Payout Drives Santa Anita Handle Over $17.5 Million

Spurred on by the prospect of a mandatory payout, $5,316,575 in new money was wagered in Saturday's 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 Jackpot at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., creating a massive total Jackpot pool of $6,214,637.

With 201 winning tickets with six winners, each ticket paid $24,654.80.

Saturday's Rainbow 6 was comprised of races five through 10 and included a pair of graded stakes, the Grade 2 San Vicente, which went as race seven and the Grade 3 Thunder Road, which was carded as race eight.

Total pari-mutuel handle on the 10-race program was $17,571,849.

Here are the winning numbers and win payoffs in Saturday's Rainbow 6:

Race 5, #10 Pawnee, $19.80; Race 6, #2 Gregdar, $22.20; Race 7, #6 Concert Tour, $2.80; Race 8, #2 Hit the Road, $8.20; Race 9, #12 Bob's Sniper, $19.80 and Race 10, #8 Agreetodisagree, $9.40.

Gulfstream: Analyst Nicoletti Picks 10 Winners, Rainbow Jackpot Has $1.1 Million Guarantee

Gulfstream's host and analyst Ron Nicoletti picked 10 winners on Saturday's 12-race program at the Hallandale Beach, Fla., track.

Nicoletti started the day by selecting the winners of the first nine races. They were Girl Dad ($6.60), Hard Game ($8), Noble Empire ($3), Bourbon in May ($7.60), Augusta Melody ($3), Great Island ($2.60), Democracy ($15.60), Yodel E.A. Who ($4.60), and R Mercedes Boy ($5.60), Nicoletti scratched into Great Island when his top selection, La Signare, was withdrawn from the Suwannee River (G3) when the race was taken off the turf.

After his selection Bourbon Highway lost his rider in the 10th race, Nicoletti had the 11th race winner in Lady's Island ($4.40) in the Ladies' Turf Sprint. His selection in the last race finished fourth.

The Rainbow 6 went unsolved for the ninth straight racing day Saturday, when multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $1,638,82.

Sunday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 6-11, kicked off by a well-stocked maiden special weight race for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs. Red Hot and Blue, a Shug McGaughey-trained daughter of Candy Ride who cost $650,000 as a yearling, heads a group of well-bred fillies who will make their respective debuts, including daughters of Medaglia d'Oro, Pioneerof the Nile and Quality Road, as well as three daughters of Into Mischief.

Todd Pletcher-trained Jouster, who won by nearly nine lengths in her auspicious turf debut, is the 6-5 morning-line favorite for Race 7, a 1 1/16-mile turf stakes for 3-year-old fillies. Kelsey Danner-trained Gladys, a full sister to 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, is entered to make her turf debut.

Race 8, a five-furlong turf sprint for $16,000 claimers, could prove to be a popular 'spread' race with bettors. Chad Brown-trained Precipitate, a Juddmonte Farms' homebred daughter of Pioneerof the Nile, is rated as the 2-1 morning-line favorite for Race 9, a mile maiden special weight race for 3-year-old fillies. Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained Born Again, a daughter of Not This Time who finished third in her recent debut; and Bill Mott-trained Obligatory, a daughter of Curlin who finished fourth in her debut after bumping at the start; are also likely to receive strong support from Rainbow 6 bettors.

A 6 ½-furlong optional claiming allowance for older horses follows in Race 10. Michael Yates-trained Reservenotattained will seek his third straight victory after winning both of his last two races by 6 ½ lengths. A mile turf race with a full field of $16,000 claimers in Race 11 figures to offer a strong challenge to bettors looking for a 'single' to complete their Rainbow 6 tickets.
