‘I Can’t Believe It’: 300-1 Shocker Provides ‘Massive Thrill’ In Australian Guineas

There are shock results, and then there are shock results. In a triumph described as “surreal” by his connections, Lunar Fox became one of the longest-priced G1 winners of all time anywhere in the world with a 300-1 victory in the Australian Guineas at Flemington.

“I can't believe it – it hasn't sunk it,” said jockey Michael Dee after landing his fifth G1 success. “To be honest, I didn't give him much hope and no one else really did either! It's obviously a massive thrill and I can't believe it has just happened.”

Australian sources were left racking their brains to find an equivalent – but all were agreed this was certainly the biggest price to succeed at the top level for at least 35 years, going back to 250-1 winner Abaridy in the Caulfield Guineas of 1986.

Blinkers seemed to make a profound difference to Lunar Fox, who had come 12th of 14 on his previous outing in the G3 CS Hayes Stakes at the same venue just two weeks ago.

The son of Foxwedge wore down front-running favorite Tagaloa in the closing stages and the line came just soon enough to deny Cherry Tortoni, who flew home from the rear, by a half-length.

Trainer's representative Holly McKechnie was queried by Racing Victoria stewards about the horse's improvement.

Holly McKechnie (representing trainer Paul Preusker): “It's a bit surreal at this stage. I can't believe it. He's always had a lot of ability, this horse. Obviously last start he ran below par and we couldn't really find any issue. We've done the old trick with the blinkers and it seems to have done the job. Last time was just out of character. He's always trying this horse. Getting to the outside and the additions of blinkers certainly helped him.”

Michael Dee (jockey): “All I could do today was do my job and do it to the best of my ability and hopefully the horse ran well in doing so. Having the blinkers on today and just a massive improvement. They drilled it into me before the race to stay off the fence. From the gate we were able to get the perfect run three-wide and work into it.”

NYRA’s Empire 6 Wager To Continue Daily Mandatory Payout Through March

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) announced the Empire 6 wager will continue to offer a daily mandatory payout in the month of March at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Featuring a $0.20 bet minimum and 20 percent takeout, the Empire 6 wager requires bettors to select the first-place finisher of the final six races of the card. The full pool, minus takeout, will be distributed to bettors who select the first-place finisher in the greatest number of races on the card.

NYRA established a daily mandatory payout of the Empire 6 for the month of January at Aqueduct as part of a pilot program in response to horseplayer interest in wagers that reward the daily player with the opportunity for impressive payouts.

The daily mandatory payout was extended through February with the pilot project expanded by offering the Empire 6 as a retail-only wager. The pilot project will continue with both caveats throughout the month of March.

Aqueduct will offer 13 racing dates in March with live racing generally conducted Friday through Sunday, with the addition of a special Thursday card on March 25 to make up for weather-related cancellations during the Big A winter meet.

The Empire 6 was launched in August 2019 with a jackpot provision in which the full pool would be paid out only to a single ticket selecting the first-place finisher in all six races, otherwise 75 percent of the day's net pool would be distributed to those who selected the first-place finisher in the greatest number of races with the remainder added into a jackpot and carried to the next day's Empire 6.

Gulfstream Park: American Prince Registers Sharp Maiden Score; Wednesday’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot Has $950,000 Guarantee

Irving Cowan's American Prince debuted at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., on Sunday with a thoroughly dominating 3 ½-length victory, leaving a field of equally well-bred 3-year-olds.

The son of Liam's Map ($13.80) broke alertly under Emisael Jaramillo, shook off early pressure and drew off to a decisive triumph in the six-furlong maiden special weight test carded as Race 3 on a 12-race program.

“I thought he had some potential. This was a real good race. I didn't know if he had enough to outrun real good horses right now,” trainer Ralph Nicks said. “He's a half to Remarkable Soul, who we won a couple of races with here. She was a talented filly. Hopefully, he has her talent and maybe a little more.”

Harvard, a full brother to 2016 Eclipse Award-winning juvenile champion and 2017 Preakness runner-up Classic Empire, rallied to finish second.

American Prince ran six furlongs in 1:10.40 under Emisael Jaramillo.

A first-level optional claiming allowance is the likely target for American Prince, said Nicks.

“It's a long year,” he said.

Wednesday's Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool Guaranteed at $950,000
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $950,000 Wednesday at Gulfstream Park.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the sixth straight racing day Sunday since a lucky bettor broke the jackpot for $712,824.06 Feb. 22. Multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $61,262.28 Sunday.

The jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

There will also be a Super Hi-5 carryover Wednesday of $10,146.85.

WHO'S HOT: Irad Ortiz Jr. added a pair of winners to his meet-leading total, scoring aboard Luann ($2.80) in Race 2, Aviano ($6.80) in Race 8 and Ghostly Beauty ($6) in Race 10.

Emisael Jaramillo doubled, scoring aboard Tellington ($70.80) in Race 1 and impressive debut winner American Prince ($13.80) in Race 3.

Hall of Famer Javier Castellano scored back-to-back aboard Zia's Song ($34.40) in Race 4 and Glory of Florida ($16.60) in Race 5.
