Essential Quality Tabbed As 3-1 Morning Line Favorite For Final Kentucky Derby Future Wager

Godolphin's undefeated champion colt Essential Quality was made the 3-1 morning line favorite in the field of 24 betting options for Pool 5 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KDFW”) that will span Friday-Sunday.

Pool 5 of the KDFW is the final pari-mutuel opportunity for bettors to get early action prior to the 147th running of the $3 million Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade 1) on Saturday, May 1. The three-day pool opens Friday at noon (all times Eastern) and will close Sunday at 6 p.m. Wagering will be available on www.TwinSpires.com and other outlets.

Trained by Brad Cox, Essential Quality is currently based at Fair Grounds and is preparing for the April 3, $800,000 Blue Grass Stakes (G2) at Keeneland. The Tapit colt most recently defeated six rivals, including fellow KDFW entrant Spielberg, in the $750,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn. Essential Quality is one of three Cox trainees in Pool 5. The others are Shortleaf Stables' $150,000 Smarty Jones winner Caddo River and Juddmonte Farm's $400,000 Risen Star (G2) hero Mandaloun.

One of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert's top Derby contenders, Life Is Good, was removed from contention for this year's race because he is scheduled to undergo surgery March 26 to remove a small chip in his left hind ankle. Baffert is still well-stocked for the Kentucky Derby with Gary and Mary West's undefeated colt Concert Tour. The son of 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense is targeting the $1 million Arkansas Derby (GI1 on April 10 following his victory in the $1 million Rebel (G2). Along with Concert Tour, the Baffert army also includes Zedan Racing Stables' $100,000 Robert B. Lewis (G3) winner Medina Spirit along with SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Stonestreet Stables, Golconda Stable, Siena Farm and Robert Masterson's Rebel runner-up Hozier and Southwest runner-up Spielberg.

Another horse likely to garner attention in Pool 5 of the KDFW is Courtlandt Farm's $300,000 Fountain of Youth (G2 winner Greatest Honour. Campaigned by 2013 Kentucky Derby winning trainer Shug McGaughey III, Greatest Honour is the likely favorite in Saturday's $800,000 Florida Derby (G1).

The complete field for Pool 5 of the KDFW (with trainer, morning line odds): #1 Big Lake (Steve Asmussen, 50-1); #2 Caddo River (Cox, 30-1); #3 Collaborate (Saffie Joseph Jr., 30-1); #4 Concert Tour (Baffert, 9-2); #5 Crowded Trade (Chad Brown, 30-1); #6 Dream Shake (Peter Eurton, 50-1); #7 Essential Quality (Cox, 3-1); #8 Greatest Honour (McGaughey, 4-1); #9 Helium (Mark Casse, 30-1); #10 Hidden Stash (Vicki Oliver, 50-1); #11 Highly Motivated (Brown, 30-1); #12 Hot Rod Charlie (Doug O'Neill, 6-1); #13 Hozier (Baffert, 30-1); #14 Mandaloun (Cox, 30-1); #15 Medina Spirit (Baffert, 20-1); #16 Midnight Bourbon (Asmussen, 30-1); #17 O Besos (Greg Foley, 50-1); #18 Prevalence (Brendan Walsh, 20-1); #19 Proxy (Mike Stidham, 30-1); #20 Risk Taking (Brown, 30-1); #21 Rock Your World (John Sadler, 50-1); #22 Spielberg (Baffert, 50-1); #23 Weyburn (Jimmy Jerkens, 30-1); #24 “All Other 3-Year-Olds” (20-1).

There are 10 races remaining on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The remaining race schedule can be found at www.kentuckyderby.com/horses/prep-races.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which features $2 Win and Exacta wagering, provide fans of Thoroughbred racing with opportunities to place bets on possible entrants in the Kentucky Derby at odds that could be far greater than those available on the day of the race.

There are no refunds in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Gulfstream Park: $1.1-Million Rainbow 6 Jackpot Guarantee Wednesday; Mandatory Payout On Florida Derby Day

Live racing returns to Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., on Wednesday, March 24, with a 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool guarantee of $1.1 million.

Post time for the first of 10 races is 1:10 p.m.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved Sunday for the 10th consecutive racing day since a March 6 mandatory payout. Multiple tickets with all six winners each returned $55,489.44.

The jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Wednesday's Rainbow 6 begins in Race 5, a starter allowance for 4-year-olds and up sprinting five furlongs on the turf that drew a field of nine including last-out winners What's Inside and Legal Deal as well as Earth, beaten a neck by What's Inside March 3 at Gulfstream.

Gilded Lady takes a two-race win streak into Race 6, when seven older fillies will run six furlongs on the main track for a $16,000 tag. Race 7 is a starter allowance scheduled for 7 ½ furlongs on the grass led by Lookinlikeaqueen, beaten just a length when sixth at 48-1 in the Sunshine Filly & Mare Turf Jan. 16 and stakes-placed Jabuticaba.

Older horses will go 7 ½ furlongs on the turf in a Race 8 starter allowance that will see Mr. Tip run first off the claim for trainer Mike Maker in the 4-year-old gelding's sixth start of the Championship Meet. Wednesday's feature comes in Race 9, an entry-level allowance for Florida-bred 3-year-old fillies that marks the return of Restofthestory, making her first start since finishing second by a neck in the FSS My Dear Girl Sept. 26.

The Rainbow 6 wraps up in Race 10, a maiden claimer for 3-year-olds going a mile on the grass that drew an overflow field of 14 that has the offspring of four Triple Crown race winners including American Great, by 2015 Triple Crown champion American Pharoah.

Gulfstream Offering Mandatory Rainbow 6 Payout Derby Day March 27
In addition to a blockbuster program featuring 10 stakes, six graded, worth $1.85 million in purses led by the $750,000 Curlin Florida Derby (G1) presented by Hill 'n' Dale Farms at Xalapa, the Saturday, March 27, program at Gulfstream Park will feature a mandatory payout in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 wager.

In the Rainbow 6, the jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

However, on mandatory payout days the entire pool is paid out to the bettor or bettors with the most winners in the six-race sequence.

Gulfstream will bring down the curtain on its 2020-2021 Championship Meet Sunday, March 28.

Who's Hot: Jockey Paco Lopez rode back-to-back winners Sunday, Hold the Applause ($5.40) in Race 3 and Lovelorn Lady ($3.80) in Race 4. Joe Bravo also doubled, with Bye Bye ($5.80) in Race 5 and Raspberry Ballet ($24.40) in Race 7. Fresh off a five-win Saturday, Junior Alvarado captured Sunday's opener aboard Maker of an Empire ($5.40).

16-1 Longshot News Flash Helps Trigger $11,732 Cross Country Pick 5 Payout

Saturday's Cross Country Pick 5 paid $11,732.25 for selecting all five winners for the 50-cent wager at races from Aqueduct in New York and Oaklawn in Arkansas. The sequence's total pool was $96,633.

Oaklawn kicked things off when Emerald Princess came through at 7-1 in a six-furlong main track contest for 3-year-old filly maidens in Race 6. Emerald Princess, with Alex Canchari aboard, bested Shes Got It by three-quarters of a length, completing the course in 1:11.74. The McLean Robertson trainee paid $17 on a $2 win wager.

Aqueduct made its first foray into the mix with a thrilling finish as Dark Money edged Bustin Timberlake by a nose to win a six-furlong allowance optional claiming tilt for New York-bred 3-year-olds and up in Race 8. Dark Money, trained by Karl Broberg, rallied from fifth to hit the wire in 1:11.81. Also off at 7-1, Dark Money returned $17.40.

An even bigger upset occurred in Oaklawn's Race 7, as 16-1 Newsflash registered a two-length score in a six-furlong claiming race for 3-year-olds. Trained by Jason Barkley, News Flash paid $34.60, recording a final time of 1:10.53.

Aqueduct's ninth-race finale saw Summer Brew win by 2 3/4 lengths in a six-furlong maiden race for New York-bred sophomore fillies. Trained by Jorge Abreu and ridden by Eric Cancel, Summer Brew [$8.70] won at 3-1, posting a final time of 1:13.76.

Oaklawn ensured the entire sequence did not have a single victorious favorite when Heartbreaker, at 11-1, topped Megatap by a half length in a six-furlong maiden claimer in Race 8. Trained by Philip D'Amato and ridden by Richard Eramia, Heartbreaker [$25.60] ensured the sizable payout, notching a 1:11.51 final time.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on track, on ADW platforms, and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool.

The Cross Country Pick 5 will continue each Saturday throughout the year. For more information, visit NYRABets.com.
