Churchill Downs Race & Sports Book Set For Grand Opening Thursday

Churchill Downs Racetrack is set to accept in-person sports wagers at its new Race & Sports Book on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. (all times Eastern).

To commemorate the opening day of retail sports betting in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, there will be a grand opening ceremony at the Churchill Downs Race & Sports Book on Thursday at 9:45 a.m., and Governor Andy Beshear will place the state's first ceremonial sports wager at 10 a.m.

Other dignitaries expected to be in attendance include Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg and the First Lady of Louisville Rachel Greenberg; Ray A. Perry, Secretary, Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet; Jonathan Rabinowitz, Chairman, Kentucky Horse Racing Commission; Representative Al Gentry; and Cleo Battle, President & CEO of Louisville Tourism. Area sports celebrities Darrell Griffith, Bobby Perry, Dale Romans, Will Wolford and Eric Wood are expected to be on hand as well.

The Churchill Downs Race & Sports Book is located in the remodeled Aristides Lounge on the second floor of the Clubhouse. The 8,755 sq. ft. space showcases a massive TV wall, including a new 7' x 24' LED video screen and a dozen 90” televisions. The large area has an additional 16 large-format TVs for sports and horse racing, 15 sports betting kiosks, seven horse betting kiosks, six betting windows with tellers, a bar and seating for more than 280 guests.

The Churchill Downs Race & Sports Book will be open to the general public on Thursday at 11 a.m. and betting will continue until 11:30 p.m. Guests must be at least 18 years old to wager and enter the Churchill Downs Race & Sports Book.

Online sports betting in Kentucky will begin Sept. 28. Churchill Downs Incorporated has partnered with FanDuel, Penn Sports Interactive and Fanatics as its three online sports wagering service providers.

Colonial Downs Adjusts Thursday Post Time To 1:25 P.M.

After reviewing the racing landscape for this coming Thursday, Sept. 7, officials at Colonial Downs have decided to modify its first post time for that day to 1:25 p.m. to better coordinate with other racetracks running that day.

Live racing this week – the final week of the 27-day day meet – begins with a special card on Wednesday, September 6 to make up for a program lost earlier in the season. The 10-race card, which starts at the standard 1:30 p.m., features a $12,055 carryover into the 50-cent Early Pick 4 (races 1-5) with a low 12% takeout.

Saturday's closing day card is highlighted by the Grade 3 $500,000 New Kent County Virginia Derby as well as five additional stakes topped by the $250,000 Virginia Oaks.

Woodbine Cancels Monday Card Due To Extreme Heat Forecast

Due to the extreme heat forecasted for the Toronto area Monday, Woodbine has made the decision in consultation with the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association of Ontario and the commissioned veterinarian to cancel the day's live racing.

“The safety of the horses and all racing participants is always our top priority. Woodbine's race office will endeavor to make up for the lost races over the next few race cards,” Woodbine said in a statement.

Live racing is scheduled to return on Thursday, Sept. 7. Post time 4:50 p.m. (ET).

Hellmers Turns $3,000 Bankroll Into $55,780 To Win Pacific Classic Betting Challenge

Christian Hellmers and Fahad Althani went neck and neck to the finish line to finish first and second over 148 total entries in Del Mar's Pacific Classic Betting Challenge on Saturday. Both had large win bets on the last race winner but Hellmers, then in second, overtook Althani to pull out the victory.

Hellmers finished with a final bankroll of $55,780 over Althani's $52,346 in an epic 11 race battle going back and forth throughout the day. With prizes, Hellmers takes home more than $110,000 while Althani won over $75,000.

Third-place finisher Tyler Sprague was also in striking distance at the end finishing with $36,140 from the $3,000 starting bankroll in the one-day Challenge.

The top five received $10,000 Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge entries. Also awarded were National Horseplayers Championship (NHC) spots.

Participants competed for $150,000 in total prizes, from either on-track at Del Mar or online on TVG.com, during the fantastic Pacific Classic Day card consisting of five stakes races.
