Cross Country Pick 5 Features Races From Aqueduct, Tampa Bay Downs, Oaklawn

The New York Racing Association Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring stakes races from Aqueduct Racetrack, Tampa Bay Downs and Oaklawn Park.

Free Equibase past performances for the Cross Country Pick 5 sequence are now available for download at https://www.nyra.com/aqueduct/racing/cross-country-wagers.

Saturday's sequence begins in Race 8 [3:48 p.m. Eastern] on the Tampa Bay Downs turf as an overflow field of older fillies and mares battle for the winner's share of the $100,000 purse in the five-furlong Lightning City. The Brian Lynch-trained Mamba Wamba made her state-side debut a winning one on Dec. 23, getting up in the final strides of the five-furlong optional claimer at Gulfstream Park to win by a half-length. Eight-time winner Beautiful Grace is looking for her first stakes win and hoping to build on a successful 2021 campaign that saw her win 5-of-11 starts with three other placings.

The action moves to Aqueduct in the second leg, featuring the six-furlong Hollie Hughes [Race 8, 4:30 p.m.] for New York-bred older horses. The field of six is led by two-time race winner My Boy Tate, a son of Boys At Tosconova who boasts six career stakes wins and earnings of over $700,000. Trained, bred, and co-owned by Michelle Nevin with Little Red Feather Racing, My Boy Tate crossed the finish line first in the Say Florida Sandy for his 8-year-old debut but was disqualified for interference and placed fourth. The field includes stakes winner Jemography and 10-time winner Runningwscissors.

The middle leg of the sequence will feature older males sprinting five furlongs in the listed Turf Dash [Race 10, 4:53 p.m.] at Tampa Bay Downs. Leading the charge is 7-year-old multiple graded stakes winner Diamond Oops, who makes his 2022 debut in his first start since finishing eighth in the Keeneland Turf Mile in October. Trained by Patrick Biancone, the son of Lookin At Lucky's last win came in a handicap at Gulfstream in June. Laurel Dash winner Xy Speed will look to secure his second stakes win for trainer Gerald Bennett after a fifth in the Janus at Gulfstream last time out on Dec. 31.

The action switches to Oaklawn Park for the final two legs of the sequence, beginning in Race 8 [5:39 p.m.] as a field of older horses contest at nine furlongs for a $101,000 purse in an open optional claimer. The Brad Cox-trained Warrior's Charge enters as the 9-5 morning line favorite after a 9 3/4-length romp last time out in an optional claimer on Jan. 28, earning a 101 Beyer Speed Figure for his effort. Graded stakes placed Intrepid Heart breaks from the inside post in search of redemption after a narrow defeat to Grade 2-placed O Besos on Jan. 2.

The sequence concludes in Race 9 at Oaklawn [6:10 p.m.] with eight sophomore fillies sprinting six furlongs in the $150,000 Dixie Belle. Happy Soul, away from the races since a dominant 11 1/2-length triumph in the Astoria on June 3 at Belmont Park, returns for trainer Wesley Ward as the 9-5 morning-line favorite. A daughter of Runhappy, Happy Soul boasts a 2-for-3 lifetime record and will again be piloted by Hall of Famer John Velazquez. Grade 2 Adirondack-winner Wicked Halo will challenge from post 3 in her first start since her winning graded stakes debut in August. Other contenders include Grade 3 Schuylerville winner Pretty Birdie for trainer Norm Casse and recent maiden winner Icy Stare Down for trainer Brad Cox.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool. The Cross Country Pick 5, which features a low 15 percent takeout, will continue each Saturday throughout the year.

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 gross jackpot pool will be guaranteed for $900,000 Thursday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., where the popular multi-race wager has gone unsolved for 11 racing days in a row following a mandatory payout on Jan. 29 Pegasus World Cup Day.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

The Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 4-9 on Thursday's program.

Who's Hot:  Paco Lopez doubled on Wednesday aboard Where's Joey ($4) in Race 2 and Frolic Man ($21.10) in Race 5. Low Takeout Stronach 5 Features Turf Races From Gulfstream, Santa Anita

The Stronach 5, which continues to produce a strong return on investment with a low 12-percent takeout, will feature turf races Friday from Santa Anita Park and Gulfstream Park.

The popular wager will also include races from Laurel Park and Golden Gate Fields.

There were 12 winning tickets in last week's Stronach 5, each worth $11,033.90. Friday's Stronach 5 once again features five competitive races in just over 60 minutes.

Leg A: Laurel Race 8, 3:53 ET
1 1/16 mile Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds and up
Maid the Journey and Souper Emperor finished more than a dozen lengths last out behind Visual Artist, who returned to win against starter allowance company. Souper Emperor makes his second start off a short layoff and could be all alone on the front in this six-horse field. Jack Gave Back steps up into non-winners of three after a 6 ¼-length victory Jan. 27 for trainer John Robb, who is winning at 41-percent during the current meet. Dr. Ferber makes his second start off the claim for Kieron Magee.

Leg B: Gulfstream Race 8, 4:11 ET
six furlongs, Starter Allowance ($37,000), 4-year-olds and up
Absolut Grit returns to the races off a two-month layoff with a couple of 'bullet' works and first time for trainer Rohan Crichton, who is 35-percent off the claim. Smiling Teufles looks for his second consecutive victory for trainer Dan Hurtak. The son of Teuflesberg has three wins in five tries at the distance. Black Belt has been away since August when he raced at Del Mar, but he enters the race with a 'bullet' work Jan. 20 for trainer Mark Casse.

Leg C: Golden Gate Race 3, 4:18 ET
six furlongs, Claimer $8,000, Fillies & Mares
Good Time Dolly beat leading trainer Jonathan Wong's Circulodeganadoras by two lengths Jan. 23 at a mile. Wong cuts back his mare in distance and goes out second time off the claim. Big Chick drops in class after finishing fifth against better at Santa Anita last month.

Leg D: Gulfstream Race 9, 4:42 ET
1 1/16-mile turf, Allowance optional Claimer ($54,000), 4-year-olds and up
Timmy M. beat three of the seven in this race last out on the main track. Has two wins, two seconds and a third in last five, all on Tapeta or main track. Trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. saddles Exchange Day, third off the layoff. The son of Itsmyluckyday should be on the front of close. Mister Leonardo goes second off the claim for trainer Aubrey Maragh after finishing second in last despite traffic problems.

Leg E: Santa Anita Race 3, 5:08 ET
1 1/8-mile turf, Starter Optional Claimer ($40,000), 4-year-olds and up
Cosmo rallied at a mile to finish second Jan. 14 to Encroachment, who returned to win an allowance optional claimer. Me B Bubba T, 2 ¼ lengths behind Cosmo a month ago, should appreciate the added distance. The seven-horse field also includes Bender, who was three lengths behind Cosmo after stumbling and racing rank around the first turn. This will be his second start after a three-month layoff.

Fans can watch and wager on the action at 1ST.COM/BET as well as stream all the action in English and Spanish at LaurelPark.com, SantaAnita.com, GulfstreamPark.com, and GoldenGateFields.com.

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes. The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.
