Over $4.5 Million Wagered Over First Two Weeks Of Legal Sports Betting In Kentucky

Two weeks after opening in-person sports wagering and one week prior to the launch of mobile wagering, Gov. Andy Beshear updated Kentuckians on the success of the retail launch and what they can expect next.

Gov. Beshear announced that preliminary numbers following the first two weekends of retail wagering indicate more than $4.5 million was wagered in the state.

“This is a strong number that certainly reflects the excitement Kentuckians have for the opening of sports wagering,” said Gov. Beshear. “With college football and the NFL season underway, plus the launch of mobile wagering, we expect that number will grow significantly.

“It has taken many years to get here, but sports wagering is finally a reality in Kentucky. This is a win-win for Kentuckians, who can enjoy a quality entertainment experience and benefit from funds staying right here in our state to help us build a better Kentucky,” added Gov. Beshear.

On Thursday, Sept. 28, Kentuckians can begin placing wagers on their mobile phones.

In preparation for the mobile opening, users can create an account and deposit money into their preferred, licensed mobile wagering application or applications. Gov. Beshear said that mobile partners are reporting that well over 60,000 mobile accounts are already pre-registered in the state. The Governor noted that not all application licensees have reported yet.

The following mobile applications have been licensed by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) to operate in Kentucky and will launch their applications on opening day:

  • Bet 365
  • Bet MGM
  • Barstool Sportsbook
  • Caesars
  • Draft Kings
  • FanDuel
  • Fanatics

Circa Sports Kentucky has been licensed by the KHRC and plans to launch a mobile application later this year.

Earlier Thursday, the Sports Wagering Advisory Council met and recommended additions to the sports wagering catalog. The wagering catalog is a list of sporting events and sports governing bodies approved for wagering in Kentucky. Additions to the sports wagering catalog include:

  • Formula One Racing
  • NRL (National Rugby League Australia)
  • PFL (Professional Fighters League MMA)
  • Bellator (MMA)
  • Universal Tennis League

The council also recommended criteria for selecting independent testing laboratories for technical components of sports wagering systems. The recommendations were approved by KHRC Executive Director Jamie Eads, subject to ratification by the full commission at their next scheduled meeting.

Today's news is the latest in a string of sports betting announcements by Gov. Beshear.

On Aug. 15 and 18, Gov. Beshear signed executive orders 2023-480 and 2023-483appointing members of the Sports Wagering Advisory Council. The council will advise the full commission and provide additional voices who have knowledge of the sports betting industry.

On Aug. 17, Gov. Beshear announced a timeline for sports wagering to open in Kentucky. That timeline now moves closer to full implementation.

On Aug. 22, the KHRC voted to approve temporary licenses for seven operators and nine service providers. The details of those approved for licensure and their business relationships are available here. A list of licensed retail sportsbooks is available here. Some retail locations and mobile applications are coming soon.

Kentucky chose a tiered implementation, which has been used in multiple states and which allows for the testing of policies and procedures before the full rollout that includes mobile applications.

House Bill 551 established a new excise tax on sports wagering: 9.75% on the adjusted gross revenues on wagers made at a licensed facility and 14.25% on wagers placed online or on a smartphone.

Sports wagering is expected to increase the state's revenue by an estimated $23 million a year upon full implementation. The increase in revenue will support the oversight of sports wagering and then be dedicated to the Kentucky permanent pension fund.

Additionally, 2.5% will support the Problem Gambling Assistance Fund. The fund educates Kentuckians on safe gambling practices, the risks of developing a gambling problem, risk factors and warning signs of gambling problems and available services to reduce the consequences of problem gambling.

Equibase Analysis: Can Saudi Crown Be Caught In Pennsylvania Derby?

The Grade 1, $1 million Pennsylvania Derby at Parx Racing in Bensalem, Pa., drew a nearly full field of 11 3-year-olds, with five entering the race off wins.

Los Alamitos Derby winner Reincarnate will attempt to give trainer Bob Baffert his fifth Pennsylvania Derby win in the past 10 years, including in 2022 with Taiba. Il Miracolo is another horse entering the race off a win, having captured the Smarty Jones Stakes last month over the Parx surface. Scotland won the Curlin Stakes at the distance of the Pennsylvania Derby in July before finishing sixth after leading for the first mile in the 1 1/4-mile G1 Travers Stakes last month.

Saudi Crown has come close to winning a pair of stakes at this level, first when beaten a nose in the G3 Dwyer Stakes then when beaten a nose in the G2 Jim Dandy Stakes. Similarly, Dreamlike came close when beaten a nose and a head in the G2 Wood Memorial in April, before a win at the distance in July followed by a fifth of seven finish last month, neither in stakes races. West Coast Cowboy finished second in the G3 West Virginia Derby last month and is another who has proven competitive at the level. Gilmore earned his best placing when second in the G3 Bay Shore Stakes in April at a shorter distance, before third-place finishes in the G2 Pat Day Mile Stakes and G1 Woody Stephens Stakes, and won his most recent race last month at Saratoga. Daydreaming Boy ran his best race in a stakes this year in his most recent start when third, beaten 4 3/4 lengths by Il Miracolo in the Smarty Jones. Magic Tap enters the Pennsylvania Derby, his first try in a stakes, off a powerful win at the distance last month at Saratoga. Crupi enters the race off a win in an allowance race but was seventh and ninth in his only two previous stakes efforts. Modern Era, a maiden with a zero-for-eight career record, rounds out the field.

Main win contenders:

Saudi Crown has yet to win a stakes race in the 3-year-old division this year, but not for lack of trying or for lack of ability. When stretched out to a mile for his third career start, in the Dwyer Stakes in June, Saudi Crown ran very well, earning a 107 Equibase Speed Figure and battling gamely for the entire length of the stretch head and head with eventual winner Fort Bragg, coming up just a nose shy of victory on the wire.

Stretching out to two turns for the first time in the Jim Dandy Stakes four weeks later, Saudi Crown was once again exceptionally game, because after leading from the start he battled down to the wire with favorite Forte, just losing in the final stride by the bob of a head. That effort, at the distance of the Pennsylvania Derby, earned an improved 109 figure. With a good inside post for this race, which should allow jockey Florent Geroux the ability to secure the lead and the rail from the start, Saudi Crown could take another step forward and although there may be competition in the final yards once again, this time he could prevail to win.

Scotland also has run the best race of his career at the 1 1/8-mile distance of the Pennsylvania Derby. That effort came in the Curlin Stakes in July at Saratoga where, after leading from the start, Scotland was engaged by Il Miracolo, who drew even with Scotland for a half-mile as the pair battled head and head. During that time, Scotland would not give the lead away, eventually asserting himself to draw off by 3 1/4 lengths, earning a 107 figure in the process. A few weeks later, Scotland was flattered when Curlin runner-up Il Miracolo won the Smarty Jones Stakes by three lengths while drifting out badly down the stretch.

In his next start on Aug. 26, traveling the longer distance of 1 1/4 miles over a muddy track, Scotland faded to sixth after leading for the first mile of the race. Back at the distance of his last win, and having shown he's not just a need-the-lead type as he rallied from seventh to win one race before the Curlin, Scotland could rebound. If he does, he could run well enough to win this year's Pennsylvania Derby.

Magic Tap was as impressive and as fast when winning at the distance of the Pennsylvania Derby last month at Saratoga as either Saudi Crown was in the Jim Dandy or as Scotland was in the Curlin. Although only an allowance race, Magic Tap continued his pattern of improvement, from a 93 figure three races back to 98, then to 110 in that victory on Aug. 13. In that race, Magic Tap was close to the early pace while second from the start, about a half-length from the leader, but then the leader got away by 2 1/2 lengths with an eighth of a mile to go. Closing mercilessly in the final yards, Magic Tap prevailed by a neck, so he too appears to be a formidable contender in this race.

About the likely favorite:

As to the likely public betting choice Reincarnate, there are a number of factors which, in my opinion, suggest his probability to win is much lower than that suggested by his odds. First, he draws the outside post in this nearly full field. Combined with a running style that suggests he needs to lead from the start to win, given that all three of his victories have been earned that way, his outside post dictates jockey Juan Hernandez will have to use a lot of the colt's speed to get good position before the first turn and avoid going wide and losing ground. This is a lot to ask because it appears very likely Saudi Crown will have the lead from the start as the two horses inside of him in the gate have no desire to go to the front early.

With Magic Tap and Scotland also both possessing excellent tactical speed, this may cause Reincarnate to go too fast in the early stages to remain a strong factor at the wire. Additionally, his two best efforts, when winning the Sham Stakes in January, and when winning the Los Alamitos Derby last month, earned 103 and 101 figures, respectively. When compared to the 109 figure Saudi Crown earned in his most recent race, the 110 figure Magic Tap earned in his most recent race and the 107 figure Scotland earned one race before last, Reincarnate does not appear capable of improving to run as fast as is needed to win this race.

The rest of the field, with their best Equibase Speed Figures, is Crupi (95), Daydreaming Boy (104), Dreamlike (99), Gilmore (110), Il Miracolo (102), Modern Era (78) and West Coast Cowboy (98).

Traditional ‘70/30’ Pick Six, Turf Pick 3 Head Santa Anita’s Autumn Meet Wagering Menu

With a traditional $1 dollar Pick Six and an all-new wager, the “Santa Anita Turf Pick 3” leading the way, Santa Anita has announced its 2023 Autumn Meet Wagering Menu, which will be in effect on opening day, Friday, Sept. 29.

The traditional Pick Six requires players to pick winners in the final six races on each day's card and will pay out 70 percent of the net pool whenever there are six winning tickets. If no player hits six of six, 70 percent of the net pool is carried over to the next racing day. Thirty percent of the pool is then paid out to consolation tickets with five winners.

Offered for the first time, the Santa Anita Turf Pick 3 is a $3 minimum wager that will be comprised of the final three turf races on each day's program, conditions permitting.

The 19-day Autumn Meet will no doubt be highlighted by the 40th running of the two-day Breeders' Cup World Championships on Nov. 3 & 4 and will be hosted by Santa Anita for a record 11th time.

With the Breeders' Cup looming on closing weekend, the Autumn Meet will get off to a fast start with nine stakes scheduled for the first three days of racing—beginning with the Grade 3, $100,000 Chillingworth Stakes, for fillies and mares at 6 ½ furlongs on opening day.

Four stakes, headed by the Grade 1, $300,000 Awesome Again, for three-year-olds and up at a mile and eighth, will headline a tremendous card on Sept. 30, with all of them serving as potential stepping-stones to Breeders' Cup glory for horses in their respective divisions.

In addition to the Awesome Again, the Grade 2, $200,000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship presented by Estrella Jalisco at six furlongs, a Breeders' Cup “Dirt Dozen” race, the Grade 2, $200,000 Eddie D, at about 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf course and the Grade 2, $200,000 City of Hope Mile, will also share center stage.

On Sunday, Oct. 1, another Breeders' Cup “Dirt Dozen” event, the Grade 2, $200,000 Zenyatta Stakes for fillies and mares at a mile and one sixteenth, the Grade II, $200,000 John Henry Turf Championship at a mile and one quarter on turf, the Grade 3, $100,000 Tokyo City Cup at a mile and one half and the $100,000 Unzip Me Stakes, for 3-year-old fillies at about 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf, will highlight another outstanding opening weekend program.

Santa Anita will continue to offer a low 14 percent takeout 50 cent Early Pick 5, as well as the 50 cent Late Pick 5, $1 exactas, $2 rolling Daily Doubles, 50 cent rolling Pick 3's, an early 50 cent Pick 4, as well as 10 cent Superfectas on all races with a minimum of six runners.

In addition to wagering on-track, fans have a variety of betting options, including 1stbet.com, which can be downloaded free of charge at the App Store. In addition to Santa Anita's simulcast signal, all of the track's races will be shown live on FanDuel TV.

$86,514 Pick 6 Carryover Awaits Horseplayers Thursday At Aqueduct

Thursday's card at Belmont at the Big A in South Ozone Park, N.Y., will be bolstered by a Pick 6 carryover of $86,514 after the multi-race wager went unsolved on Sunday's nine-race card.

The $1 Pick 6 returned $420 to bettors who selected 5-of-6 winners correctly.

The sequence kicked off in Race 4 – a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight for 2-year-old fillies – when the Katie Davis-piloted Ringy Dingy [No. 6, $26] rallied to a 1 3/4-length score for trainer Danny Gargan.

Trainer Linda Rice saddled Cypress Creek Equine's B D Saints [No. 6, $6.80] to victory in a state-bred maiden event for juvenile fillies going 1 1/16 miles on the outer turf in Race 5 under jockey Jose Ortiz.

Manny Franco found the winners' circle in Race 6 – a one-mile turf starter allowance for 3-year-olds and upward – aboard Robert V. LaPenta's Quality G [No. 6, $8.30] for Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher.

Moving Pictures [No. 1, $7] was triumphant from a 13-month hiatus for trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. in Race 7 – a $16,000 claimer going six furlongs over the main track.

Race 8 – a nine-furlong main track allowance optional claimer – saw Film Star [No. 3, $2.90] capture her fifth lifetime victory. Jose Ortiz piloted the Linda Rice trainee.

With only three horses uncovered in Race 9 – a 1 1/16-mile turf allowance for New York-breds – the Leah Gyarmati-trained Giramonte [No. 3, $194.50] prevailed as the longest shot in the 12-horse field with Joey Martinez in the irons.

Thursday's Pick 6 will kick off in Race 4 at 2:39 p.m. Eastern. First post for the nine-race card is 1:05 p.m.
