Gulfstream Park: Saturday’s Rainbow 6 Has $300,000 Guaranteed Jackpot

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 gross jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $300,000 for Saturday's program at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., where the popular multi-race wager went unsolved on the third racing day following Sunday's mandatory payout.

Saturday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 7-12, including the $100,000 Hurricane Bertie (G3) in Race 7 and the $100,000 Captiva Island in Race 10.

Bill Mott-trained Obligatory, who placed second in the Acorn (G1) at Belmont and won the Eight Belles (G2) at Churchill Downs last year, is scheduled to make her 2022 debut in the 6 ½-furlong Hurricane Bertie as the 8-5 morning-line favorite. Multiple graded-stakes winner Four Graces, who is trained by Ian Wilkes, enters the Hurricane Bertie a close-up second-place finish in the Jan. 29 Inside Information (G2).

Brian Lynch-trained Tobys Heart is the 2-1 morning-line favorite for the Captiva Island, a five-furlong turf stakes for fillies and mares. The daughter of Jack Milton, who is graded stakes-placed around two turns, has won two sprint stakes, the 6 ½-furlong Music City at Kentucky Downs and the 5 ½-furlong Bolton Landing at Saratoga. Eddie Plesa Jr.-trained Miss Auramet enters the Captiva Island off a front-running score in the Lady's Turf Sprint.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Who's Hot: Leading rider Luis Saez continued his uber-successful championship meet Friday, scoring aboard Grainer County ($7.60) in Race 2 and Blustery ($5) in Race 3.

$5,642 Payout In Stronach 5; Biggest Price In Sequence Was $13.20

There were 21 winning tickets in Friday's Stronach 5 with each worth $5,642.30.

The Stronach 5 featured races from Laurel Park, Santa Anita Park, Gulfstream Park, and Golden Gate Fields with a low 12 percent takeout. Two of the five legs produced payouts of more than $8, and both came at Gulfstream.

The Stronach 5 kicked off with the 3-1 shot Titan's Will and Johan Rosado winning Laurel's ninth race. It was the gelding's seventh career win and first at the 1 1/8-mile distance. The action shifted to Santa Anita Park for the second leg of the sequence and the 2-1 shot Increase Stakes holding off Youte. Gulfstream's eighth race served as the third leg and it was Merseyside pulling off a bit of an upset at odds of 5-1. Smarmy, the 1-2 favorite, broke poorly and finished third.

Golden Gate's third race, the fourth leg of the sequence, was won by 2-1 favorite Absolute Scenes, who drove past the field inside the final sixteenth. The Stronach 5 concluded with Gulfstream's ninth race and Sanura driving to victory for trainer Barclay Tagg and jockey Julien Leparoux at odds of 9-2.

Friday's races and sequence

  • Leg 2 –Santa Anita Race 3: Increase Stakes $6.20
  • Leg 3 – Gulfstream Race 8: Merseyside $13.20
  • Leg 4 – Golden Gate Race 3: Absolute Scenes $6.60

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.

New York Stewards Take No Action Against Jose Lezcano For Backward-Looking Ride At Aqueduct

After reviewing films of Aqueduct's first race on March 6 with jockey Jose Lezcano on Friday, the board of stewards at the Ozone Park, N.Y., racetrack will take no action against the rider.

Lezcano rode the 8-year-old Foxtail to a second-place finish that day as the 2-1 second choice for owner-trainer Linda Rice in a $12,500 claiming race after repeatedly looking back and to his inside at the top of the stretch.

According to the Equibase chart footnotes of the race, Foxtail “stalked outside the leading duo under stout restraint, engaged those leaders while still in hand in the four path around the turn, had the rider take a peek behind him at the five-sixteenths, took the advantage while the rider took five more looks to his inside into upper stretch, was asked while surprised by the presence of the winner to her outside at the three-sixteenths then lost the advantage, kept on under a drive while fighting inside that foe in the final furlong and just missed while well clear for the place.”

Foxtail was beaten a neck by Indian Bella, ridden to victory by Trevor McCarthy for trainer Mertkan Kantarmaci.

Rice claimed Foxtail in her previous start on Jan. 13 from Kantarmaci and Indian Bella's owners, Krakow Racing LLC and America's Pastime Stables for $20,000.

Patrick McKenna, vice president of communications for the New York Racing Association, issued the following statement on Friday: “Following a formal film review of Sunday's opening race at Aqueduct racetrack, the board of stewards will take no action against jockey Jose Lezcano for his ride aboard Foxtail. The matter remains under ongoing review.”

The day before his effort aboard Foxtail – which was widely criticized on social media – Lezcano guided Morello to victory in the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes for trainer Steve Asmussen. A 36-year-old native of Panama, Lezcano was the leading rider at the 2019 Belmont Park spring/summer meet and has won 2,982 races since coming to the U.S. in 2004.
