Thoroughbred Owner, Horseplayer Al Roehl Dies At 66

Al Roehl, a Thoroughbred owner and regular participant in handicapping contests, died on March 24 in Lexington, Ky., following a brief illness. He was 66.

Semi-retired from his Chicago-based marketing and mentoring career, Roehl was known for his low-key positive attitude and passion for Thoroughbred racing. He enjoyed mingling with horsemen during training hours and attending the races on random weekdays and big event afternoons. His handicapping skills earned him spots in various challenges including national tournaments.

Roehl owned racehorses both with his wife Jan, and in small partnerships. His past runners include Prayer Service, an allowance winner at Churchill Downs, Oaklawn Park and Ellis Park. The gelding is retired at the Roehl's Lexington farm after being retrained to pull a carriage steered by the Roehls.

“Al was always fun,” said Steve Margolis, who was among the trainers Roehl employed. “He was a dear friend, not just a client. He was always happy no matter how his horses ran. He was so knowledgeable about the game that he understood why a horse did not win.”

After their initial meeting on a Belmont Park-bound train, the Roehls spent the afternoon sharing wagers and cashing tickets. They later married and relocated to Lexington in 2006. In recent years, they have been known for their popular “Picnic with Goats” venture in which customers dine at their farm with friendly goats nearby.

A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Al worked at the Leo Burnett Worldwide advertising agency with Kellogg's as his primary account. His enduring professional relationships attest to his ability to do his job brilliantly while still being an approachable guy from Chicago's south side. He then ran a consulting group for 14 years before founding The Neuro-Fitness Center in 2019. His goal was to help individuals and organizations “Get their brain to work for them. Not against them.”

In addition to Jan, Al is survived by his four children, Jeff (Gina), Melanie (Bob), Tyler and Christopher; stepchildren Sara and Alex (Erin); and four grandchildren. A celebration befitting a man who led a big life will be held in Chicago this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of one's choice.

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 gross jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $600,000 Sunday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., after going unsolved Saturday for the ninth racing day in a row since the jackpot was hit or a $342,836.75 payoff.

The Rainbow 6 sequence Sunday will span Races 5-10. The sequence will include three turf races.

The sequence kicks off with a maiden special weight event for fillies and mares going about five furlongs on the Tapeta. Both the sixth and eight races will be allowance optional claimers at 7 ½ furlongs on the turf for 4-year-olds and up.

In the sixth, Tour of Duty goes out first time off the claim from Chad Brown for Martin Drexler and is 2-1. The 4-year-old son of War Front faces seven others including Alado, a winner last out on Tapeta for Saffie Joseph Jr., and Eamonn. In the eighth, Grade 1 winner Tango Tango Tango makes his first start since finishing seventh in the Jockey Club Derby Invitational in September at Belmont Park.

The Rainbow 6 concludes with a field of 12 maiden claimers going 7 ½ furlongs on the turf. Trainer Mike Maker puts blinkers on Rogers Ginger and has named Luis Saez to ride. Full of Mischief, a gelded son of Into Mischief, goes out for Antonio Sano. Mark Casse sends out Kodiak Mamba, who had a troubled trip last time out in January.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Gulfstream Park: $500,000 Guaranteed Jackpot In Saturday’s Rainbow 6

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 gross jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $500,000 Saturday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., after going unsolved Friday for the eighth racing day in a row since the jackpot was hit or a $342,836.75 payoff.

The Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 6-11, including the $75,000 Melody of Colors in Race 7 and the $75.000 Texas Glitter in Race 9.

A full field of 12 is entered for the Melody of Colors, a five-furlong turf sprint for 3-year-old fillies in which Todd Pletcher-trained Mystic Eyes is slated to make her 2022 debut. The daughter of Maclean's Music, who is the 3-1 morning-line favorite, concluded her juvenile campaign with a front-running victory in the Nov. 6 Steward Manor Stakes at Belmont Park.

Simon Callaghan-trained Comedic, who closed with a rush to graduate on Tapeta last time out in an off-the-turf maiden race, is set for a return to turf, over which she finished second twice in her first two career starts in Southern California. Rusty Arnold-trained Artos is scheduled to make her first start since finishing fourth in the Queen Mary (G2) at Royal Ascot last June.

The Texas Glitter, a five-furlong turf sprint for 3-year-olds, features a field of seven, including Wesley Ward-trained Lucci, a commanding front-running optional claiming allowance winner in his 2022 debut at five furlongs on turf. Last year, the son of Not This Time broke his maiden at first asking before finishing fifth, beaten a length, in the Norfolk Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot. Jonathan Thomas-trained High Front, a dazzling debut winner at five furlongs on turf at Gulfstream in January, returns in the Texas Glitter.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Who's Hot: Rafael Hernandez notched a double on Friday's card, scoring aboard Karla Sofia ($10.80) in Race 3 and Lido Key ($7.20) in Race 5.  Tyler Gaffalione also doubled, winning with Super Lunar ($7.60) in Race 2 and Champagne Lady ($7.60) in Race 9.
