Gulfstream Park: Saturday’s Rainbow 6 To Have $600,000 Guaranteed Jackpot

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 gross jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $600,000 for Saturday's program at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved Friday for the 17th racing day in a row since a lucky bettor hit for a $182,098 payoff April 28.

Saturday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 7-12, featuring a highly competitive $65,000 Big Drama, a seven-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and up that were bred in Florida, in Race 11.

Eddie Plesa Jr.-trained King Cab, a 4 ¾-length winner of the seven-furlong Sophomore Stakes for Florida-bred 3-year-olds at Tampa two starts back, will take on older foes for a second time Saturday. The Noble Bird gelding showed the way in an April 30 open optional claiming allowance at six furlongs only to be caught late.

Veteran stakes winners Well Defined, Shivaree, Gatsby, Willy Boi, as well at Cajun's Magic, a 3-year-old who will make his first start since finishing 6th in the Curlin Florida Derby (G1), are also entered in the Big Drama.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Warrior's Pride, a two-time sprint stakes winner over the Gulfstream turf course, is the 3-1 morning-line favorite in the $60,000 Sunny Isles, a five-furlong overnight handicap for 3-year-olds and up on turf, in Race 6. The Antonio Cioffi-trained son of Poseidon's Warrior is coming off a gate-to-wire victory in a five-furlong optional claiming allowance. Steve Klesaris-trained The Virginian, who finished a length behind Warrior's Prince while finishing second last time, will also go to post in the Sunny Isles.

$43,523 Carryover Into Saturday’s Pick 6 At Belmont Park

Saturday's card at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., will be bolstered by a Pick 6 carryover of $43,523 after the multi-race wager went unsolved on Friday's nine-race program.

The $1 Pick 6 returned $763.50 to bettors who selected 5-of-6 winners correctly.

The sequence kicked off in Race 4 with Baba [No. 2, $7.60] taking a starter allowance with apprentice Jose Gomez in the irons for trainer Rudy Rodriguez. Race 5 saw the Christophe Clement-trained stakes winner Mischievous Dream [No. 4, $5.80] score an optional claiming victory by a half-length over the Widener turf.

The Sal Iorio, Jr. trainee No Chalk [$26.60] lived up to her name in Race 6 and upset the state-bred allowance over the main track with Kendrick Carmouche in the irons.

Fast N Fearious [No. 4, $11.20] earned his second victory in a row in Race 7 for trainer Rob Atras and came home a one-length winner under Dylan Davis in the $50,000 claimer before Fouette [No. 3, $20.60] upset the penultimate leg of the sequence in Race 8 with Irad Ortiz, Jr. up to earn an optional claiming victory for trainer Linda Rice.

With only two horses covered in Race 9, Tempermental [No. 2, $8.70] triggered the carryover with an off-the-pace victory under Jose Ortiz to break her maiden for a $40,000 tag for trainer Jeremiah Englehart.

Saturday's Pick 6 begins in Race 5 [3:03 p.m. Eastern]. First post for the 10-race card, which features the Grade 3, $100,000 Soaring Softly in Race 9, is 1 p.m.

NYRA Offering Cross Country Pick 5 From Belmont, Churchill On Monday

The New York Racing Association Inc. will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Monday featuring stakes from Churchill Downs and the Big Apple Showcase Day card at Belmont Park.

Free Equibase past performances for the Cross Country Pick 5 sequence are now available for download at https://www.nyra.com/belmont/racing/cross-country-wagers.

The sequence begins in Churchill Downs' seventh race at 3:50 p.m. where a field of 10 will contest a seven-furlong allowance over the main track. Rigney Racing's Angkor will make his first start since finishing a close second on Nov. 3 at Churchill for trainer Phil Bauer. A C Expressway, trained by Norm Casse, was made the lukewarm 7-2 morning line favorite. The 4-year-old son of Mineshaft was a distant eighth in the restricted Knicks Go on the Kentucky Derby undercard last out.

Action shifts to beautiful Belmont Park for the second leg, the $125,000 Bouwerie [Race 7, 4:06 p.m.] for 3-year-old New York-bred fillies going seven furlongs on the main track. Dream Maker Racing's three-time stakes winner Yo Cuz will attempt to make amends following an uncharacteristic fourth in the NYSSS Park Avenue on April 24 at the Big A. The daughter of Laoban secured all three stakes victories at Aqueduct, garnering career earnings just shy of $400,000. Steep opposition will be provided by Mark T. Anderson's Sterling Silver, who enters off a distant fifth in the Grade 1 Ashland at Keeneland.

The middle leg will see graded stakes action in Churchill Downs' Grade 3, $200,000 Winning Colors [Race 8, 4:22 p.m.], a six-furlong sprint for older fillies and mares. Lloyd Madison Farms IV's reigning Winning Colors victress Sconsin, trained by Greg Foley, will make her first start since capturing the Open Mind at the Louisville oval in September. Sconsin will square off against the John Ortiz-trained pair of Joyful Cadence and Novel Squall.

The penultimate leg, the $125,000 Mike Lee [Race 8, 4:40 p.m.] at seven furlongs over the Belmont main track, will see a field of nine 3-year-old New York-breds seek stakes glory. Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable's Best Idea, favored in all three of his starts, will cut back in distance from a runner-up effort in a 1 1/16-mile allowance on May 1 at Belmont. Trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, the son of Honor Code was a sharp winner on debut in February going six furlongs at Aqueduct. William J. Butler's Rotknee returns to the Empire State following a distant seventh over Turfway Park's all-weather surface in the Animal Kingdom in April. The son of Runhappy captured his third career win in the seven-furlong Damon Runyon one month earlier at Aqueduct.

Two New York-bred millionaires trained by Mike Maker will face off as the curtains close on the sequence in the $125,000 Kingston [Race 9, 5:12 p.m.] for 4-year-olds and upward going 1 1/16 miles over Belmont's inner turf. Three Diamonds Farm's Cross Border has won the last two editions of the Grade 2 Bowling Green at Saratoga while boasting three Grade 1 placings.

Somelikeithotbrown, owned by Sand Dollar Stables and Hot Pink Stables, will make his first start of the year. The son of Big Brown made his last effort a winning one when taking Belmont's Mohawk in November, a race he also won in 2020. Trainer Barclay Tagg will saddle open company stakes winner Step Dancer. The 4-year-old War Dancer colt captured the Awad at Belmont during his 2-year-old season and won last year's NYSSS Cab Calloway at Saratoga.

Hong Kong Racing Study Guide: Some Surprising Findings About Success Rates For Favorites

With the Hong Kong racing season about 75% over with, it's time to take a deep dive into how the three courses have played.

Generally speaking, favorites in Hong Kong win about 31% of the time despite field size right around a robust 12 starters per race.

Over the years, favorites did better on the wide, expansive turf course at Sha Tin compared to the tighter course at Happy Valley. The theory has been that favorites have a better chance of overcoming a difficult trip at Sha Tin since there is over 400 meters to run turning for home. At Happy Valley, the far turn is much tighter and the homestretch is much shorter – about 300 meters. So, even with bigger fields, favorites usually fared better on Sha Tin's turf course. It all made sense.

Overall this year, favorites have won 31% of the time and the average field size for all courses is 11.93 starters per race. But the three component parts of the big picture – Sha Tin Turf, Happy Valley Turf and Sha Tin All-weather – are dramatically different than what was expected.

At the time I did this research a few weeks ago, there were 74 races run on the all-weather track at Sha Tin. Only eight favorites won for a strike rate of 10.81% and the average winner paid a healthy $25.56. In the 2019-2020 season, favorites won 26.53% on the Sha Tin all-weather track so form over it way off this year.

There were 323 races run on the Sha Tin turf course and 98 favorites won for a strike rate of 30.34%. The average win price was $18.30 which is all within the margin of error of what could be expected.

For example, in the 2019-20 season, the percentage of winning favorites on the Sha Tin turf course was 33.17% with the average win price of $17.18.

The shock, and I do mean shock, was the results on Happy Valley's turf course. With 275 races run over it, 100 favorites won for a much higher-than-expected win percentage of 36.36%.

In the 2019-2020 season, favorites won only 23.89% and the average win price was $20.78. Off a statistically significant sample size, to go from 24% to 36% is remarkable and completely unexpected.

Despite the discrepancies, when you put all the ingredients back into the stew, it's basically the same season of racing in Hong Kong as far as form goes. But if there were a betting pool before the season on which turf course would yield the highest percentage of favorites, I would have gone all in on Sha Tin. And, I would have been wrong. By a lot!

Sha Tin Turf 2019/2020

33.17% winning favorites

Sha Tin Turf 2021/2022

30.34% winning favorites

Happy Valley Turf 2019/2020

23.89% winning favorites

Happy Valley Turf 2021/2022

36.36% winning favorites

Sha Tin All-Weather 2019-2020

26.53% winning favorites

Sha Tin All-Weather 2021-2022

10.81% winning favorites
