Weekend Lineup Presented By BetMakers: Revving Up On The Jersey Shore

Last week, Belmont Park was the focus of the racing world with the final leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, preceded by a host of stakes for other Thoroughbred divisions. Earlier this week, the action shifted across the pond to England's Ascot racecourse for the Royal meet.

On Saturday, the Jersey Shore will be the place to be as Monmouth Park  revs up for the Grade 1 TVG.com Haskell Stakes on July 23 with a preview day that includes four added-money events and the return of Hot Rod Charlie, who edged Mandaloun in the 2021 Haskell but was disqualified for stretch interference.

Hot Rod Charlie goes postward with Hall of Famer Mike Smith aboard in the G3 Salvator Mile, the final contest on a big 14-race card that gets under way at 12:15 p.m. ET.

Out West in Arcadia, Calif., Santa Anita wraps up its summer season on Sunday with a pair of grass stakes, including the G3 San Juan Capistrano Stakes, one of the most unique races on the continent at 1 3/4 miles and with a start at the top of the hillside grass course. Phil D'Amato, leading trainer at the meet in a runaway, has two horses entered in the San Juan Capistrano as he bids for his fourth consecutive win in the race. Even with a win, he'll still have a ways to go to catch the late Hall of Famer, Charlie Whittingham, who won the marathon fixture a remarkable 14 times.

The San Juan Capistrano shares the closing day spotlight with another turf event, the G3 American at one mile.

Here's a quick look at some of this weekend's graded stakes:

Saturday

3:27 PM – Grade 3 Poker Stakes at Belmont Park

Only five older horses entered the Poker with Chad Brown – who has yet to record a victory in this race –  holding a pair of aces, including English-bred Masen, the solid 6-5 morning line favorite who comes off a listed stakes win over just two foes at the same distance at Belmont on May 22. Flavien Prat rides this one, giving up the mount on Hot Rod Charlie in the Salvator Mile at Monmouth Park. Brown's other entrant, Public Sector, put together three consecutive graded stakes wins in New York last summer and is second choice on the morning line at 5-2. Jose Ortiz rides. Luis Saez will be aboard Wolfie's Dynaghost, who has early speed and could be a threat to steal the race.

Poker Entries

4:47 PM – Grade 3 Eatontown Stakes at Monmouth Park

Princess Grace put together an impressive four-race winning streak in Grade 2 and Grade 3 races and then was defeated in her final two starts of 2021, including a third-place finish in the G1 Matriarch at Del Mar last November.  She hasn't started since but has training steadily at Fair Hill for Michael Stidham, who has a good strike rate for horses coming off layoffs. Chad Brown has a formidable duo in Irish-bred Lemista and Fluffy Socks, both of whom figure to be in the hunt. Fluffy Socks has a stronger record with two graded stakes victories on her ledger. Shug McGaughey brings Vigilantes Way back to Monmouth to defend her Eatontown title,  having drawn off by  2 1/4 lengths in 2021 under Paco Lopez, who rides her back.

Eatontown Entries

5:19 PM – TVG.com Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park

The Pegasus, at 1 1/16 miles, is a key prep for the TVG.com Haskell and has drawn a field of nine, led by a pair of horses that won stakes at Oaklawn this year. Home Brew, a Street Sense colt trained by Brad Cox, comes off a win April 23 in the Oaklawn Stakes. Prior to that, he was a well beaten 10th as the favorite to Dash Attack in the Smarty Jones. The latter, a Munnings colt trained by Ken McPeek,  followed his Smarty Jones victory with three consecutive defeats and then rebounded with a win over the Monmouth surface in the May 14 Long Branch Stakes. They both have the Chad Brown-trained Electability to beat. The Quality Road colt has yet to win a stakes but comes off a third-place finish to runaway winner We the People in the G3 Peter Pan.

TVG.com Pegasus Entries

5:47 PM – Grade 3 Monmouth Stakes at Monmouth Park

Chad Brown has won the last five runnings of the Monmouth and has two strong contenders of the 12 entered in this year's renewal. French-bred Sacred Life has been competitive against Grade 1 company and owns an overpowering win over the Monmouth grass course two years ago in the Oceanport Stakes. Manny Franco comes down from Belmont to ride. Brown's other entry, English-bred Public Sector, was a two-time graded stakes winner last year who will be ridden by John Velazquez. Graded stakes winner Tax comes back from a 17-month layoff for trainer Danny Gargan, who is trying the Arch gelding on turf for the first time in his 15th career start. Kent Sweezey-trained long shot Epic Bromance could be a horse for the course, with two wins, one second and one third over the Monmouth grass in four starts.

Monmouth Stakes Entries

6:15 PM – Grade 3 Salvator Mile Stakes at Monmouth Park

Hot Rod Charlie returns to Monmouth Park for trainer Doug O'Neill off a three-month break after a strong runner-up performance in the $12 million Dubai World Cup. The Oxbow 4-year-old nosed out Mandaloun in last year's Haskell but was disqualified after causing Midnight Bourbon to clip heels and lose his rider in the stretch. With Mike Smith aboard, he's been installed the 4-5 morning line favorite. Todd Pletcher sends Mind Control back to Monmouth and while the 6-year-old may be better sprinting around one turn, he has shown an ability to get the distance of the Salvator Mile. Shirl's Speight is a Grade 1 winner on turf for Roger Attfield, who is trying to enhance the Speightstown 5-year-old's record for possible stud duty purposes with a graded stakes win on dirt. He's only tried dirt once in 10 previous starts and he'll need to improve greatly off that effort to be a factor in here.

Salvator Mile Stakes Entries

7:00 PM – Santa Maria Stakes at Santa Anita

There is some depth to this field of six older fillies and mares, with four of the starters having registered graded stakes wins, led by Private Mission, the 9-5 favorite for Sean McCarthy, who is training most of Bob Baffert's horses while the latter is suspended. The Into Mischief filly won the G2 Zenyatta last October at Santa Anita. McCarthy has a second runner, Varda, who is winless in two starts since a G1 victory in the Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos in 2020. Lady Mystify won the G3 Remington Park Oaks for trainer Peter Eurton last September and comes off a very good third to champion Malathaat and Bonny South at Keeneland in the G3 Doubledogdare on April 22. Argentine-bred Blue Stripe posted a 6-1 upset in the G2 Santa Margarita in April with a strong stretch run for trainer Marcelo Polanco.

Santa Maria Entries

Sunday

7:00 PM – Grade 3 San Juan Capistrano Stakes at Santa Anita

Phil D'Amato has two contenders in his bid for a fourth consecutive San Juan Capistrano. Irish-bred Rijeka will be making his fourth start for D'Amato after running mostly in marathon events in Florida and Kentucky for Saffie Joseph Jr. Rijeka has two wins from three starts in the D'Amato barn but has yet to be tested in a stakes in California. Joe Bravo rides. Red King will be making his fourth consecutive San Juan Capistrano start, having bookend third-place finishes around a 2020 victory. The 8-year-old by English Channel will be running late under Abel Cedillo. Brandon Walsh ships Irish-bred Modus Operandi from Kentucky, where the Frankel gelding most recently finished eighth in the G3 Louisville at long odds. He has recorded one U.S. victory from six starts since exiting Aidan O'Brien's yard at Ballydoyle in Ireland. His lone Irish victory was an 11-length score in an 18-horse maiden field at 1 1/4 miles. Umberto Rispoli will be aboard.

San Juan Capistrano Entries

9:00 PM – Grade 3 American Stakes at Santa Anita

The American brings down the curtain on the Santa Anita meet as the final of 11 races on closing day of a meet that began last Dec. 26. The race attracted an evenly matched group of 10 with no standout favorite.  Vanzzy, now trained by Dan Blacker, is going in sharp form. Leading trainer Phil D'Amato has two entered, both with solid chances, led by Irish-bred Hong Kong Harry, who is 2-for-2 in the U.S. Jack Sisterson returns to California after being based in the Midwest and has Kentucky Pharoah primed off a strong effort at Pimlico on May 20.

Belmont: Friday’s Card Offers $59,977 Pick 6 Carryover

Friday's card at Belmont Park will be bolstered by a Pick 6 carryover of $59,977 after the multi-race wager went unsolved on Thursday's nine-race program.

The $1 Pick 6 returned $9,996 to bettors who selected 5-of-6 winners correctly.

The sequence kicked off in Race 4 with In My Wake [No. 6, $17] upsetting a maiden claimer over the inner turf with Trevor McCarthy up for trainer Christophe Clement. The Michelle Nevin-trained Dancing Buck [No. 2, $8.40] found the winner's circle for the first time since November with a frontrunning score under Joel Rosario in Race 5.

Kendrick Carmouche piloted Saint Selby [No. 3, $7.20] to an optional claiming victory for trainer Rob Atras' second win on the card in Race 6 before Joel Rosario earned his second win on the day as Perceived [No. 2, $41.40] took the Elmont Starter Handicap in Race 7 for trainer Rudy Rodriguez.

Spirit and Glory [No. 10, $51.50] missed the break of Race 8 but recovered well to run down his foes under Dylan Davis in an allowance optional claimer for trainer Robert Falcone, Jr.

With just two horses covered in the final leg, Me 'n Sap [No. 6, $65] triggered the carryover when Luis Cardenas piloted the son of Bourbon Courage to a 31-1 claiming victory in Race 9 for trainer David Donk.

Friday's Pick 6 will kick off in Race 4 [2:32 p.m. Eastern]. First post for the nine-race card, is 1 p.m.

Equibase Analysis: Shirl’s Speight Can Upset Hot Rod Charlie In Salvator Mile

All eyes will be on likely prohibitive betting favorite Hot Rod Charlie in the Grade 3, $150,000 Salvator Mile Stakes on Saturday at Monmouth Park, not only because he leads the field, by far, with career earnings of $5.1 million, but also because he's become a fan favorite. A lot of that has to do with his heart, because even though he has four runner-up finishes in his career to go along with four wins, he never quits trying. When last seen, he finished second in the Group 1 $12 million Dubai World Cup in March.

Next in terms of accomplishments is Mind Control, who has banked $1.4 million, his most recent victory coming at the distance of the Salvator Mile last fall in the Parx Dirt Mile Stakes. Shirl's Speight is another stakes winner, but on grass, having most recently won the G1 Maker's Mark Mile in April. Helium won the G2 Tampa Bay Derby in 2021 before an eighth-place finish in that year's Kentucky Derby and is winless in five races since then.

Phat Man has won nine times in his career but is another winless since last year, July to be exact, when taking the Battery Park Stakes. Mohaafeth finished second when sprinting in the Frank Y. Whitely Stakes in April and is trying to earn his first win in a two-turn race. Confessor leads the field with 11 career wins but is trying to win a stakes race for the first time.

Analysis and top contenders:

In terms of class, only Hot Rod Charlie and Shirl's Speight have won at the top Grade 1 stakes level in their careers. Helium and Mind Control are both Grade 2 winners, but Helium's win came 15 months ago and against 3-year-olds only in the 2021 Tampa Bay Derby so he appears to have much less probability to win than the other three, particularly as he has finished second twice in a row this year in allowance level races and as the heavy favorite.

Of the trio, I have to give Shirl's Speight slight preference because it's highly likely he will offer better value for a win bet as compared to Hot Rod Charlie. Shirl's Speight has won five of 10 races in his career, including the Tampa Bay Stakes this past February with a then career-best 105 ™ Equibase® Speed Figure, followed by a visually impressive victory in the Maker's Mark Mile in April with a 110 figure. Nine of his 10 races have come on turf or all-weather and the only time he ran on conventional dirt like he is doing here he finished fifth. However, that was a sprint and he's not a sprinter. He followed that effort up with 11 months away from the races so it's not relevant in my opinion.

Shirl's Speight loves running about a mile, where his record is four for seven. Jockey Emma Wilson, who rode him to victory in the Tampa Bay Stakes, comes down from Woodbine to ride him while foregoing an entire day of mounts at her home track. Although fourth in the Turf Classic Stakes when last seen in May, not only was the mile and one-eighth distance a bit too far for Shirl's Speight, the race has turned out to be a very productive “key” race from which three of the other eight have won and another finished second including the one-two finishers in the Manhattan Stakes last weekend. Being a son of Speightstown, who has had eight different sons or daughters win stakes race on conventional dirt, I believe Shirl's Speight can run as well as he did on grass in the Maker's Mark Mile and win this year's Salvator Mile Stakes.

There's no doubt Hot Rod Charlie can win this race by repeating any of his last seven efforts going back to his runner-up finish in the 2021 Belmont Stakes. He won the Haskell Stakes at Monmouth one month later but was disqualified before winning the Pennsylvania Derby last fall with authority and a career-best 117 ™ figure. This year he missed by a nose in the San Antonia Stakes before travelling to Dubai and winning the Al Maktoum Challenge. Next, in the Dubai World Cup, showing all his heart Hot Rod Charlie never gave up and finished second in a strong field of 10. Rested nearly three months and working very well at his home based in southern California, Hot Rod Charlie may need only repeat any of his last three efforts to win.

Mind Control has won nine of 25 races so is definitely no slouch. Known primarily as a sprinter, nevertheless he has won twice and finished second in the other of his last three races at this mile trip. The most recent of those came last September in the Parx Dirt Mile Stakes where he earned a 107 figure which might be competitive with the top two contenders. Most recently he finished a well-beaten third in the Carter Handicap and in the Churchill Downs Stakes but those were grade one events compared to this grade three level. If Mind Control can run back to his last mile effort he could be competitive here.

The rest of the field, with their best ™ Equibase Speed Figures, is Confessor (107), Helium (97), Mohaafeth (105) and Phat Man (115).

Shirl's Speight
Hot Rod Charlie

NYRA Triple Play: Three Turf Races In Sequence This Sunday At Belmont

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will offer a NYRA Triple Play wager on Sunday featuring a trio of turf races at Belmont Park, including the $150,000 NYSSS Cupecoy's Joy and the $150,000 NYSSS Spectacular Bid.

The NYRA Triple Play, a Pick 3 wager with a $3 bet minimum available exclusively to retail customers, has a takeout rate of 19 percent. Initially offered as the final three races on the Sunday card, the NYRA Triple Play will now feature three specially selected races.

Sunday's sequence kicks off in Race 4 at 2:34 p.m. Eastern with the return of stakes-winner Dakota Gold in the $150,000 NYSSS Spectacular Bid, a seven-furlong Widener turf sprint for eligible New York-sired sophomores. Trained by Danny Gargan, the Freud chestnut graduated in an off-the-turf maiden special weight in September at Saratoga Race Course and followed with a 2 1/2-length score in the Nownownow three weeks later at Monmouth Park.

Dakota Gold completed his campaign with a close fifth-place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, defeated just 2 1/4-lengths by Modern Games. He will be challenged by Marinara Sauced, who rallied from last-of-10 to get the winner's slice of a seven-furlong state-bred maiden tilt on May 21; and Surprise Boss, who is undefeated in his three turf starts.

The second leg [Race 7, 4:06 p.m.] will feature a nine-furlong state-bred optional-claiming event to be contested over the inner turf. The 11-horse field is led by the Graham Motion-trained Chulainn, who will stretch out from an even fourth in his seasonal debut on May 15 in a seven-furlong turf sprint at Belmont. Should a strong pace develop from prominent types Bar Fourteen, Ruse and Saratoga Flash, the Chad Brown-trained Grape Nuts Warrior could be dangerous late.

Closing out the sequence is the $150,000 NYSSS Cupecoy's Joy [Race 9, 5:12 p.m.], a seven-furlong Widener turf sprint for eligible New York-sired sophomore fillies which attracted a talented field of 11 and one main-track only entrant. Galaxina, who makes her turf debut for trainer Jimmy Bond, posted a 24-1 upset last out in the NYSSS Park Avenue sprinting 6 1/2-furlongs at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Fellow dirt stakes winner Morning Matcha, a Central Banker bay trained by Butch Reid, Jr., will turn back significantly from her last-out sixth in the nine-furlong Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan as she looks to score in her turf debut. Silken Dollar garnered a 68 Beyer Speed Figure for a 14-1 upset maiden turf win sprinting seven furlongs on May 30 at Belmont. Also certain to attract attention is Robyn and Eli, a maiden from the barn of trainer Chad Brown, who has finished second in both career starts.

Featuring a $3 bet minimum, the NYRA Triple Play will cover three races on Sunday cards throughout the 44-day Belmont spring/summer meet. Each NYRA Triple Play will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool. Wagering on the NYRA Triple Play will be available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country.

America's Day at the Races will present daily coverage and analysis of the spring/summer meet at Belmont Park on the networks of FOX Sports. For the complete broadcast schedule, visit https://www.nyra.com/belmont/racing/tv-schedule.
