The New York Racing Association Inc. (NYRA) will host an all-stakes Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring racing from Belmont Park, Churchill Downs, Monmouth Park, and Thistledown.

Free Equibase past performances for the Cross Country Pick 5 sequence are now available for download at https://www.nyra.com/belmont/racing/cross-country-wagers.

The sequence, which features fives stakes to be completed in less than one hour, kicks off in Race 8 at Belmont Park at 4:40 p.m. Eastern with the Grade 2, $250,000 Mother Goose at 1 1/16-miles for sophomore fillies. Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher sends out Group 3 UAE Oaks-winner Shahama for her second start in North America following an off-the-board effort in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks. She will face returning rival Venti Valentine and a new challenger in Grade 1-winner Juju's Map.

Action switches to Monmouth for the Goldwood [Race 11, 4:47 p.m.] as an overflow field of fillies and mares 3-and-up sprint 5 1/2-furlongs over the turf led by nine-time winner Hey Mamaluke for trainer Patricia Farro. An experienced field includes multiple-stakes winner Robin Sparkles for trainer Bruce Brown and the consistent pair of Champagne Lady, who has hit the board in her last five starts for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey; and Honey Pants, who boasts a record of 13-3-6-0 for conditioner Christophe Clement.

The middle leg, the $250,000 Lady Jacqueline [Race 10, 4:48 p.m.], offers a field of 10 fillies and mares 3-and-up traveling nine furlongs at Thistledown topped by multiple graded-stakes winner Crazy Beautiful for trainer Ken McPeek. Steep opposition will be provided by multiple graded-stakes winner Army Wife for conditioner Mike Maker and the Rob Atras-trained Maracuja, who captured the Grade 1 CCA Oaks last summer at Saratoga Race Course.

A field of seven older fillies and mares will line up in the penultimate leg, the Grade 3 Chicago [Race 9, 4:55 p.m.] at seven furlongs over the Churchill Downs main track. The regally-bred Pennybaker, whose dam Macaroon is a full-sister to multiple Grade 1-winning multi-millionaire Frosted, will look to improve on her five-race win streak in her graded debut. The Michael Stidham trainee captured the Heavenly Cause last out in her first stateside start. A talented group includes Grade 1-winner Bell's the One and graded-stakes winners Sconsin, Four Graces, Kalypso, and Lady Rocket.

Closing out the sequence is a field of eight sophomores in the nine-furlong Grade 3 Ohio Derby [Race 11, 5:35 p.m.] from Thistledown. Grade 1 Florida Derby winner White Abarrio will look to make amends from an off-the-board effort in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby for conditioner Saffie Joseph, Jr., facing off against fellow Derby starters Tawny Port, winner of the Grade 3 Lexington for trainer Brad Cox; and Classic Causeway, who makes his first start for McPeek after taking the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis and Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby for his former trainer Brian Lynch. Ethereal Road, an emphatic winner of the Sir Barton last out at Pimlico, could be a factor late for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool. The Cross Country Pick 5, which features a low 15 percent takeout, will continue each Saturday throughout the year.

Equibase Analysis: Tawny Port Ready For Rebound In Ohio Derby

Saturday's Grade 3 Ohio Derby at Thistledown Racino drew a field of eight, with three horses last seen in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May.

Among that trio the best finish was obtained by Tawny Port, who ended up seventh in the 20 horse field, beaten four and three-quarter lengths at the end. Classic Causeway checked in 11th in the Derby, with White Abarrio finishing 16th in the field of 20. Prior to that, Tawny Port won the G3 Lexington Stakes while White Abarrio won the G1 Florida Derby. Classic Causeway won the G2 Tampa Bay Derby in March before an 11th place finish in the Florida Derby.

Among the rest, Ethereal Road skipped the Derby and just won the Sir Barton Stakes five weeks ago so may be ready for another top effort. Barese won the Gander Stakes in February before a fifth place finish in the G2 Wood Memorial, followed by a third place effort in the NY Stallion Stakes. Droppin G's is winless in his last four races including a fourth place effort, beaten 14 lengths, in the G3 Matt Winn Stakes two weeks ago. Brigadier General and Pineapple Man round out the field, each with just a maiden win to their credit.

Analysis and top contenders:

Tawny Port won the first two starts of his career, then finished fifth in the Risen Star Stakes. Following a career best 102™ Equibase® Speed Figure earned when second in the Jeff Ruby Steaks in April, the colt earned enough points for a Kentucky Derby start with a win in the Lexington Stakes three weeks before the Derby. After starting 14th in the Derby, Tawny Port continually passed horses to get to fifth with an eighth of a mile to run but ran evenly thereafter, ending up seventh and just under five lengths from the winner. The 100 figure earned in that effort is tied for the best last race figure in the field with Ethereal Road.

However, Tawny Port is facing much easier competitors than Ethereal Road and that is the deciding factor in giving this colt top billing in the Ohio Derby. Tawny Port has an additional advantage over Ethereal Road as he can race about fourth in the early stages, which may be the best position to be in because up to three horses (Classic Causeway, Pineapple Man and Brigadier General) should set or press the pace from the onset. Best of all, Tawny Port attracts North American leading jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. to ride.

Ethereal Road was going to run in the Kentucky Derby until a last minute withdrawal one day before the race. Prior to that the colt finished second in the Rebel Stakes in February with a 90™ figure then two races later improved to 94 when fourth behind Tawny Port in the Lexington Stakes. Entering the non-graded Sir Barton Stakes instead of the Preakness two weeks following the Derby, trainer D. Wayne Lukas appeared to have made the right choice with Ethereal Road as he rallied from fifth with a quarter mile to run to draw off by nearly five lengths, earning a career-best 100 figure in the process. That figure continued an improving pattern begun in January so there is a strong possibility this colt could run the best race of his career to win the Ohio Derby.

White Abarrio made his mark on the road to the Kentucky Derby earlier this year when winning the Holy Bull Stakes and Florida Derby in succession, earning 102 then 100 figures. In the Kentucky Derby, White Abarrio found himself much further back in the early stages than he had ever been, as he was 10th after a quarter mile and 12th after a half-mile had been run. He was also five to nine paths wide for most of the race, so fading to from 14th to 18th in the stretch was potentially to be expected. Finding an easier field in the Ohio Derby and with the tactical speed to take the lead if need be or to sit off another horse or horses who may want the lead at the start, White Abarrio has potential to rebound to his best performances of the year which would make him competitive in this situation.

The rest of the field, with their best ™ Equibase Speed Figures, is Barese (97), Brigadier General (99), Classic Causeway (104), Droppin G's (92) and Pineapple Man (84).

Win Contenders:
Tawny Port
Ethereal Road
White Abarrio

Maryland Jockey Club TV Analyst Francois Launches ‘Deep Dive’ Handicapping Video Show

Maryland Jockey Club television racing analyst Kali Francois recently launched a detailed and in-depth handicapping show on Learnhorseracing.com and its “Learn Horse Racing” channel on YouTube.

The Learn Horse Racing videos offer viewers a peek over the shoulder of some of the best handicappers in the game as they handicap a race. It's a highly annotated, deep dive into every detail of how top handicappers decipher past performances and what handicapping tools they utilize.

The first two published episodes feature noted public handicappers and racing personalities Andy Serling and Jessica Paquette, with radio host and handicapper Steve Byk and Craig Milkowski of Timeform US scheduled next.

“We wanted to do something really different, educational, and I think important for the horse racing and horse wagering industries,”  said Francois who is also a jockey and was a rider for top trainers including Todd Pletcher & Gai Waterhouse.  “We wanted to fill a detailed educational niche that no other show or racing podcast is doing.”

The episodes feature detailed, annotated notes on past performances and other handicapping tools of just one race, so the audience can learn in detail the tools and methods the experts use to handicapping a race.

Kali Francois

Co-created by Francois and Maryland-based Thoroughbred racing stable owner Marty Carmichael, the duo is hoping the show will prove beneficial to newcomers and experienced handicappers alike.

“We see all these big name handicappers make their picks, but rarely do we see their methods,” said Francois.  “The learning curve for handicapping is steep, so hopefully this helps new people in the game, and even the experienced players are interested to see exactly how Andy Serling deciphers the forms.”

“We're hoping our show stands out as evergreen educational content that will last for years,” she said.
