Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 To Features Racing From Saratoga, Ellis, Monmouth

The New York Racing Association Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring two graded races from Saratoga Race Course, along with action from Ellis Park and Monmouth Park.

Free Equibase past performances for the Cross Country Pick 5 sequence are now available for download at https://www.nyra.com/saratoga/racing/cross-country-wagers.

Saturday's sequence kicks off at Saratoga with the Grade 1, $500,000 Diana [Race 8, 5:03 p.m.], a nine-furlong turf test for older fillies and mares which will see trainer Chad Brown saddle 4-of-6 starters led by the undefeated Bleecker Street. A last-out winner of the 10-furlong Grade 1 New York on June 10 at Belmont, she will face off against multiple graded/group winning stablemates Technical Analysis and Rougir as well as Grade 3-winning pace threat In Italian. Charlie Appleby, who sent out last year's 1-2 finishers Althiqa and Summer Romance, will be represented by Group 2-winner Creative Flair. Graded-stakes winner Dalika completes a compact, but talented field.

Action then switches to Monmouth Park where a full field of sophomore fillies will sprint 5 1/2-furlongs on the turf in the $100,000 Blue Sparkler [Race 11, 5:05 p.m.] led by the graded-stakes placed Mystic Eyes for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher. The Maclean's Music dark bay finished third in the Grade 3 Matron in October ahead of a neck score in the Stewart Manor one month later at Belmont Park. She will face steep opposition from recent off-the-turf allowance winner Mac the Pee H Dee for trainer Jorge Duarte, Jr.; two-time winner Benbang for conditioner Jonathan Thomas; and Irish-bred Delmona for trainer Jamie Begg.

The middle leg will see an overflow field of sophomores travel nine furlongs in a Saratoga turf allowance [Race 9, 5:39 p.m.] topped by recent maiden winner Fort Ticonderoga for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey. The War Front bay is a half-sibling to grade-stakes winner Doswell and a full-brother to graded-stakes placed Secretary at War. McGaughey also saddles maiden winner Dripping Gold, a full-brother to multiple graded-stakes winning turfer Aurelia's Belle. Robert Ribaudo will saddle the stakes-placed Daunt, who enters from a close fifth in the Grade 2 Pennine Ridge going nine furlongs at Belmont. Credit Event, a maiden winner for Chad Brown; and Forever Souper, a potential pace presence for Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse, are sure to attract attention.

The penultimate leg from Ellis Park [Race 9, 5:40 p.m.] will offer a field of 10 fillies and mares 3-years-old and up sprinting 5 1/2-furlongs in a turf maiden special weight. A wide-open field is led by 7-2 morning-line favorite Stella Teresa, who enters from a pacesetting second in her turf debut sprinting five furlongs on June 22 at Indiana Grand for trainer Justin Wojczynski. Rather Be Lucky, a 3-year-old Into Mischief bay purchased for $300,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, will try turf for the first time for trainer Al Stall, Jr. Cause Celebre, by Gun Runner, will debut for trainer Steve Margolis. A half-sister to 2018 Bolton Landing winner Stillwater Cove, Cause Celebre is out of the Broken Vow mare, Celibataire, who is a full sister to multiple graded stakes winning turfer Interactif.

Closing out the sequence is the Grade 3, $175,000 Sanford [Race 10, 6:13 p.m.] featuring a field of 12 juveniles sprinting six furlongs over the Spa main track. Leading the way are an impressive pair of Pletcher-trained maiden winners in Forte and Major Dude, who will square off against New York-bred maiden winner Andiamo a Firenze for trainer Kelly Breen. Valenzan Day, third last out in the Tremont for trainer and co-owner Rudy Rodriguez, should have pace to close into if Joel Rosario can work out a trip from the outermost post.

Jockeys Juarez, Lopez Suspended After Tumultuous Race At Monmouth

Riders Paco Lopez and Nik Juarez were suspended by the stewards of the New Jersey Racing Commission following a July 1 race at Monmouth Park.

Lopez was given a five-day suspension to run July 29 through Aug. 1 and Aug. 5 for careless riding, while Juarez got an eight-day suspension and a $500 fine for “initiating a physical altercation with another jockey.”

Lopez was aboard Midnight Diva in the seventh race on July 1 when he came over on Juarez aboard La Costa. The two clipped heels and La Costa stumbled badly. Juarez pulled up La Costa safely. According to a report from The Blood-Horse's Byron King, Juarez confronted Lopez in the scales area after the race was over.

The five days for Lopez is not the first time he has been suspended for riding infractions that have put other riders in danger. He received 14 days earlier this year for an incident in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth that caused two horses and their jockeys to fall.

Lopez is currently the leading rider at Monmouth.

A partial replay of the Monmouth feed that included a clip of the incident in question was published on Twitter:

Saratoga Live Returns To FOX Sports On Thursday

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) and FOX Sports today announced the return of Saratoga Live, the critically acclaimed and award-winning television show providing daily coverage of the 40-day summer meet at historic Saratoga Race Course.

Presented by America's Best Racing and Claiborne Farm, Saratoga Live will expand its reach yet again in 2022 with more than 225 hours of live coverage and analysis scheduled to air on the networks of FOX Sports.

“The best race meet in the world and the best daily coverage of horse racing are back on FOX Sports,” said Mike Mulvihill, Executive Vice President, Head of Strategy and Analytics. “Saratoga is one of the truly magical places in American sports and it's our privilege to bring the meet to horseplayers nationwide on our family of networks and on the FOX Sports app.”

Highlighted by the Grade 1, $1.25 million Runhappy Travers on August 27, which will be carried on FOX Broadcast Network (FOX) for the fourth consecutive year, the 2022 summer meet opens on July 14 and will feature 77 stakes races worth $22.6 million in total purses.

Opening weekend of the summer meet is presented by Runhappy, the champion sprinter now standing at Claiborne Farm.

In addition to the 90-minute Runhappy Travers Day show, FOX will present 1.5 hours hours of Saratoga Live on Saturday, July 30. Beginning at 4:30 p.m., the broadcast will be anchored by the 59th running of the Grade 2, $600,000 Jim Dandy.

Now in its 7th season on FOX Sports, the Saratoga Live broadcast team will include hosts Greg Wolf and Laffit Pincay III, with analysis and handicapping from Maggie Wolfendale, Acacia Courtney, Andy Serling, Paul Lo Duca, and Jonathon Kinchen. Viewers can look forward to commentary and insights from trainer Tom Amoss, Eclipse Award-winning jockey Richard Migliore and Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens. John Imbriale will handle the race calling duties at Saratoga.

New for 2022 is an aerial cable-cam system at Saratoga Race Course, which will provide viewers of Saratoga Live with a thrilling perspective of live racing on the main track and two turf courses.

The cable-cam system was constructed specifically for the demands of film thoroughbreds in full flight from a variety of angles on three different racing surfaces. In order to capture this footage, a remote-operated camera traveling up to 45 mph is suspended roughly 30 feet above the ground on cable that runs along the infield and spans the length of the Saratoga backstretch.

“This is an investment in cutting-edge technology to enhance our daily broadcasts and allow viewers to more fully experience the power, speed and skill of these world-class athletes,” said Eric Donovan, Senior Director of NYRA television production operations. “NYRA is committed to embracing these kinds of advancements, and the new cable-cam will unlock the kind of footage that was previously unthinkable in horse racing.”

The cable-cam utilizes technology provided by DEFY Products, a leader in the development of innovative camera technology to support the filming of major motion pictures, television productions, professional sports and live event broadcasts. Stadiums and arenas throughout Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League rely on a variety of DEFY products to bring television viewers closer to the action than ever before.

Extra Mandatory Payout Day Added To Del Mar’s 2022 Betting Menu

Del Mar's wagering menu for its upcoming 2022 summer racing season has a familiar look with all of the betting options from last year carried over.

The only notable change in the format is the addition of an extra “mandatory payout” day to the roster, a betting event that brings additional luster to race cards with its $3- to $5-million enhanced pools bringing palpable buzz to the shore oval surrounding its popular Pick Six wager.

In 2021 Del Mar changed its Pick Six bet from a $2 price to a 20¢ one, going along with a nationally favored format for a bet that requires picking all the winners of the day's final six races. The wager is known as the “Rainbow Pick Six.”

Last year there were two “mandatory payout” days – TVG Pacific Classic Day and closing day – when all monies in the pool went out to those with the most winners that afternoon. Those two days will be in effect again this year with the former coming on Saturday, September 3 and the latter happening on Sunday, September 11. The additional date will be relatively early on in the session on Saturday, August 6. The track's 83 summer season breaks from the gate on Friday, July 22.

“The 'mandatory payout' afternoons have proven hugely popular with our players,” noted Del Mar's director of mutuels, Bill Navarro. “Our switch to the 20¢ Pick Six minimum has allowed the small and mid-level players the ability to spread deep throughout the card and the 'mandatory' days with their huge pools excite fans from across the spectrum.”

Del Mar's Pick Six will payout 70% of the pool each day to those with the most winners with the remaining 30% carried over, provided there are no single-ticket winners. A single-ticket winner on any day takes home the entire prize.

Four other multi-race bets that have proven fan favorites will be on the roster. The Super High 5 – available on the day's last race – proved a real winner last year when the 'play' denomination was lowered from $1 down to 50¢. It will be back this year at that same 50¢ price. The other three multi-race bets that proved very well liked in 2021 – and will return this year – are the Early Pick Four (starting with Race 2) at a 50¢ price; a Late Pick Five offered on the last five races daily at 50¢, and a Win, Place, Show Parlay available for a minimum of two races and a maximum of six. It is a $2 bet.

In addition to its Early Pick Four, the track will continue to offer its usual Pick Four on the last four race of the day, a bet that has proven to be one of the most-in-demand in the country shown in the fact that it regularly registers $1-million-plus pools on weekends. Also available will be the Early Pick Five, which mirrors its Late Pick Five entrymate.

The full array of Del Mar bets is as follows: $2 win, place and show (all races); $1 Exacta (all); $2 Quinella (all); 50¢ Trifecta (all); $2 Rolling Doubles (all except last); $1 Rolling Pick 3 (all except last two); $1 Superfecta(10¢ minimum – all); $1 Place Pick All (starts w/Race 1 or 2); 50¢ Super High 5 (last); 20¢ Pick Six (last six); 50¢ Players' Pick 5 (first five and last five); 50¢ Pick 4 (Races 2 thru 5 and last four), and $2 Win-Place-Show Parlay (all races but last).

Del Mar will open its season with a three-day weekend (Friday, July 22, 23 and 24), then have five four-day weeks (Thursday through Sunday), followed by a five-day week (including Labor Day Monday, September 5), then finish with a Friday-through-Sunday weekend (September 9, 10 and 11).
