Gulfstream Park: Mandatory Payout Rainbow 6 Features Florida Sire Stakes

The wagering sequence of Saturday's mandatory payout of the 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., will feature second-leg action of the $2.2 million FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes series for 2-year-olds sired by accredited Florida stallions.

The $200,000 Susan's Girl, starring undefeated R Harper Rose, will be renewed in Race 8, while the $200,000 Affirmed, headed by undefeated Bentornato, has been carded as Race 10 in the sequence that will span Races 6-11.

While the Florida Sire Stakes races will co-headline the sequence, the $100,000 Gil Campbell Memorial is bound to keep the bettors' interest between races with an anticipated showdown between graded-stakes winner Dean Delivers and win-machine Big and Classy in Race 9.

In their only previous meeting, Michael Yates-trained Dean Delivers defeated Bobby Dibona-trained Big and Classy by 2 ¼ lengths in the six-furlong Smile Sprint (G3) July 1 at Gulfstream.

The Gil Campbell Memorial, a one-turn mile stakes for registered Florida-breds that offers a $50,000 FTBOA bonus to a registered Florida-bred winner, will present a challenge for both talented sprinters, who have yet to score in limited opportunities at the distance.

Dean Delivers raced twice at the one-turn mile distance during the 2022-3023 Championship Meet, both times in graded stakes, finishing fourth in the Gulfstream Park Mile (G2) and third in the Fred Hooper (G3).

“I think the mile is definitely the end of his distance. The mile is certainly not his best distance,” Yates said. “I think it all depends on the pace of the race.

Big and Classy finished second behind graded-stakes veteran Long Range Toddy in the Edwin T. Broome Memorial overnight handicap in his only try at the distance.

Dean Delivers followed up his sharp score in the Smile Sprint with a third-place finish behind Elite and Gunite in the July 29 Alfred G. Vanderbilt (G1) at Saratoga in his most recent effort.

“They're good horses. They're probably two of the best sprinters in the world,” Yates said.

The Vanderbilt was run over a sloppy sealed track.

“I thought it was a really good effort. He broke sharper than he ever has and made the lead pretty easy, I don't think the sloppy sealed track is his favorite surface. He ran on it at Gulfstream and his numbers dropped,” Yates said.

Dean Delivers has distinguished himself as a fighter during a 17-race career that has produced five victories and seven second-place finishes, as well a two third-place finishes.

“I was just going over his PPs on Equibase – first, second, first, second, first second. Looking back, what a horse,” Yates said. “He just gives it to you every time you lead him over there.”

Emisael Jaramillo has the return mount aboard Yates' homebred son of Cajun Breeze.

Big and Classy, who was claimed for $10,000, has won eight of his last 10 races, including 3 ½-length romp in the seven-furlong Jackson Bend overnight handicap Sept. 23.

The Rainbow 6 has gone unsolved for five programs, resulting in a jackpot pool carryover of $53,612.86. The pool is expected to surpass $250,000 Saturday.

On mandatory-payout days, the entire Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is paid out to the bettor or bettors with the most winners in the wager's six-race sequence. The carryover jackpot is usually only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool usually goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winner, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Equibase Analysis: Vahva May Have Edge Over Alva Starr In Raven Run

This Saturday's Grade 2, $350,000 Lexus Raven Run Stakes at Keeneland showcases some of the top 3-year-old filly sprinters in North America. Six of the nine entrants won their most recent races, with four of those victories coming in stakes races.

Alva Starr won at the highest level when taking the G2 Prioress Stakes last month and hopes to do the same while running this seven furlong distance for the first time. Vahva won the G3 Charles Town Oaks at the distance of the Raven Run and hopes to duplicate that effort. Lady Radler pulled off the 23 to 1 upset in the G3 Dogwood Stakes four weeks ago at the same distance and adds to the depth of contention.

Apple Picker ships in from Maryland off a strong 4 1/2-length win in the Weather Vane Stakes, while Ancient Peace cuts back in distance after a second of eight finish in the G3 Remington Park Oaks one month ago. Dazzling Blue was no match for Alva Starr in the Prioress but prior to that finished second in the G3 Victory Ride Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Nom de Plume was last seen winning a two-turn race on turf in August and tries stakes company and dirt for the first time but may be this good. Simply Stated won the Penn Ladies Dash Stakes in August and enters the race looking for her fifth straight win. Lily Poo rounds out the field, coming into the race off a pair of fifth place finishes, the most recent in the Charles Town Oaks.

Top Contenders:

Vahva may have the slightest edge over Alva Starr in this race because her most recent start in late August winning the Charles Town Oaks came at the same seven furlong distance of the Raven Run Stakes. Not only that, but the course configuration at Charles Town is such that seven furlong trip was around two-turns, which can be more difficult to navigate than one turn. The cut back in turns may help Vahva to run as well, or better, than she did in the Oaks, where she stalked in third for the first six furlongs, then came out three paths wide to win going away. That effort earned her a career-best 100 ™ Equibase® Speed Figure, a nice improvement off the 91 figure she earned a little over one month earlier when third in the Victory Ride Stakes. Considering Vahva had been away from the races for two months before the Victory Ride, her pattern for more improvement is pretty obvious. It must also be noted that the 2022 Raven Run Winner (Caramel Swirl) used the Charles Town Oaks as her final start before victory in this race.

Alva Starr has never finished worse than second in five races, winning three and placing in the other two. Her last two efforts have been her most impressive, first when winning the Dashing Beauty Stakes in July with a career-best 106 ™ figure then winning the Prioress Stakes by nearly nine lengths. Although the 103 figure in the Prioress was lower than the 106 figure in her prior start, Alva Starr was geared down in the last sixteenth of a mile so she could have run faster. An interesting fact about this filly is she is a full sister to Cilla, who won a number of stakes and earned a half-million dollars, including when third in the 2021 Raven Run following a win in the Prioress, for the same trainer (Brinkman). If there is one concern, it is that every race Alva Starr has run has been at the distance of six furlongs, so this will be her first attempt at a longer distance.

Honorable mention goes to two more talented fillies. The first of the pair is Simply Stated, as she's won four in a row including the Penn Ladies Dash Stakes in August with a 95 figure. After that, Simply Stated won on the all-weather surface at Presque Isle Downs, earning at 92 figure. What's interesting to note is that her trainer, Todd Beattie, shipped in Taris to win this race in 2014 off an identical win at Presque Isle Downs at six furlongs. Lady Radler is the other horse who I feel deserves honorable mention. She paid $48 (for $2) when winning the Dogwood Stakes last month at this distance. She won two races in a row this summer and last year she ran very well to finish second at 30 to 1 in the Myrtlewood Stakes at Keeneland. The first of her two wins this spring came in the Goldfinch Stakes, in which she earned a career-best 96 figure. As a filly with five wins in 10 races, she has some quality about her and can't be discarded as a contender.

The rest of the field, with their best ™ Equibase Speed Figures, is Ancient Peace (96), Apple Picker (92), Dazzling Blue (94), Lily Poo (90) and Nom de Plume (86).

Rainbow 6 Mandatory Payout Set For Saturday At Gulfstream

A mandatory payout of the 20-cent Rainbow 6 gross jackpot pool is set for Saturday's 11-race program at Gulfstream Park.

The Rainbow 6 has gone unsolved for four racing days following an Oct. 8 mandatory payout. Should the popular multi-race wager go unsolved through Friday's program, the jackpot pool is expected to surpass $300,000 heading into Saturday's wagering.

Saturday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 6-11, featuring three FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes events worth a purse total of at least $500,000.

The $200,000 Affirmed, starring undefeated Bentornato, in Race 10 and the $200,000 Susan's Girl, showcasing undefeated R Harper Rose, in Race 8 will co-headline Saturday's sequence, supported by the $100,000 Gil Campbell Memorial, featuring a showdown between graded-stakes winner Dean Delivers and win-machine Big and Classy, in Race 9.

The Affirmed and Susan's Girl, which will both be contested at seven furlongs, are second-leg races in the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes series for 2-year-olds sired by accredited Florida stallions. The one-turn-mile Gil Campbell Memorial will offer a $50,000 FTBOA bonus for a registered Florida-bred winner.

Jose D'Angelo-trained Bentornato, who won the $100,000 Dr. Fager in the first leg of the FSS series, is scheduled to face 11 rivals in the Affirmed, including stakes-winning Mattingly, who will be making his debut on dirt, and Christophe Clement-trained Hurricane Nelson, who has shipped from New York for an attempt to break his maiden after a pair of encouraging second-place finishes at Saratoga and Aqueduct.

Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained R Harper Rose, who missed the first leg of the Florida Sire Stakes series due to a slight fever, is slated to seek the third straight victory of her brief career against 11 rivals, including D'Angelo-trained Welcome Back, who captured the $100,000 Desert Vixen in the first leg of the FSS series.

Michael Yates-trained Dean Delivers, who finished third in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt (G1) at Saratoga last time out, defeated Big and Classy, the winner of eight of his last 10 races, by 2 ½ lengths in the six-furlong Smile Sprint (G3) at Gulfstream July 1.

There will be a $75,000 gross jackpot pool guarantee Friday for the 20-cent Rainbow 6, whose sequence will span Races 3-8, bookended by a pair of highly competitive optional claiming allowance races that figure to challenge bettors to find a 'single.'.

A six-furlong optional claiming allowance on dirt will kick off the sequence with eight fillies and mares, seven of whom have finished in the money in their most recent starts.

Friday's sequence will be wrapped up by a mile-and-70-yard optional claiming allowance on Tapeta with a field of 10 well-matched fillies and mares. Joseph Jr.-trained Tamarindo is a lukewarm 7-2 morning-line favorite coming off a second-place finish on turf at Kentucky Downs.
