Equibase Analysis: Streaking City Man Can Add Another ‘W’ In Ft. Lauderdale

Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes drew a full field of 12, plus one also-eligible, running nine furlongs on turf at Gulfstream Park. Many are accomplished stakes performers, such as recent Grade 3 Knickerbocker Stakes winner King Cause and recent Mohawk Stakes winner City Man, who has won three stakes from his last four races.

Last year's Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational winner Colonel Liam adds more depth to the field but is returning off a nine month layoff after a ninth place effort in the Group 1 Dubai Turf Stakes.

Shadow Sphinx finished second in the Artie Schiller Stakes in his most recent race and may be up to the task, as might Pao Alto (FR), who was another length and one-half back in third in that race. Winfromwithin, who won the Red Bank Stakes in September before a fifth place effort and a two and one-half month layoff, is likely to try to go for the lead, as is rail sitter Street Ready, also returning off a two month layoff. Carpenters Call won the Peach Street Stakes on all-weather this summer and has won on turf so could be a factor as well.

Tango Tango Tango showed he belongs with these horses when second in the Grade 2 Dinner Party Stakes this past May but hasn't won since earlier that same month, having run five times since then. Kentucky Ghost won the Cliff Hanger Stakes in May and a stakes quality classified allowance race in October, but was last of eight and beaten more than 20 lengths when last seen towards the end of November. Decorated Invader (the lone also-eligible), Marwad (GB), and Good Governance (GB) round out the field.

Top contenders:

City Man has won as the odds-on favorite in his last two races, but may not be favored in this year's Ft. Lauderdale Stakes because those wins came in races restricted to horses bred in New York. He won the Ashley T. Cole Stakes at the distance of the Ft. Lauderdale in September, with a very strong 111 ™ Equibase® Speed Figure then followed that up with a two and one-half length win in the Mohawk Stakes in October with a fine 108 figure. Even though those two wins came in state restricted races, City Man has proven capable of winning in open company, as he won the Danger's Hour Stakes in April and the Forbidden Apple Stakes in July, the latter in which he earned a career-best 112 figure. Best of all, jockey Joel Rosario rode him to two of those three wins and has now been in the saddle for six of the horse's eight career wins. With it likely there will be a contested early pace scenario whereby both Street Ready and Winfromwithin both want the early lead at any cost, City Man looks quite capable of earning another stakes win in this year's Ft. Lauderdale Stakes.

King Cause may be the one City Man has to run down late to win because this hard-knocking horse has the style to be third in the early stages. He won the Knickerbocker Stakes in October when leading from start to finish but on very slow fractions when no other horse wanted to be in front early but has won from off the pace as well. King Cause was so highly regarded after his Knickerbocker victory he was entered in the Breeders' Cup Mile, but did not run and has been waiting for a race like this one since then. King Cause also won two races prior to that when fourth in the early stages, earning a career-best 109 ™ figure in the process. That's the race I'm expecting him to run under Jose Ortiz, who gets on after not having ridden the horse since January but having ridden him to a win at this nine furlong turf trip before that.

Colonel Liam is likely to go to post as the betting favorite in this race, because he's won seven of 11 races and banked $1.8 million. His biggest wins came in the 2020 and 2021 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational over this turf course and at the distance of the Ft. Lauderdale. Colonel Liam returns to the races not having run in nine months, which could be an issue except for the fact he won the Tropical Park Derby at the end of December in 2020 following a four and one-half month layoff, and won this year's Pegasus following nearly eight months off. In this year's Pegasus, Colonel Liam earned a 113 figure, the same as he had earned in May of 2021 winning the Turf Classic Stakes, but then again the 112 figure City Man earned in the Forbidden Apple Stakes last July and the 109 figure King Cause earned winning this past summer both suggest Colonel Liam is not a standout if both those other horses run their best races.

Honorable mention goes to both Shadow Sphinx and Pao Alto (FR), particularly when considering who can run second to be part of the exacta, or who can run third to be part of the trifecta. Shadow Sphinx and Pao Alto (FR) finished second and third, respectively, in the Artie Schiller Stakes last month and earned 109 and 107 figures with those efforts. Shadow Sphinx has won 11 of 32 career starts and banked nearly $400,000 on grass in his career. He's trained by Mike Maker, who also saddles King Cause, so I feel we'd be remiss to ignore his chances. Pao Alto (FR) is in the hands of top trainer Graham Motion and has only run three times in the U.S. since importing from his native France. He led late in the Baltimore-Washington Turf Cup in his U.S. debut in September before settling for second, and he ran similarly well in the Artie Schiller, so could be good for another in-the-money finish in the Ft. Lauderdale.

The rest of the field, with their best ™ Equibase Speed Figures, is Carpenters Call (113), Decorated Invader (103), Good Governance (GB) (106), Kentucky Ghost (115), Marwad (GB) (104), Street Ready (110), Tango Tango Tango (110) and Winfromwithin (115).

City Man
King Cause
Colonel Liam

Timing, Tracking System Trakus To Shutter Operations This Weekend

Chairman Barry Weisbord told the Daily Racing Form Wednesday that Trakus, the in-race timing and tracking system, will cease operations this weekend.

“I think we did a great job and deserve high marks,” Weisbord told DRF. “We showed the industry why this is important. We're hoping the people in charge can improve on what we started and make the deliverables even better.”

Many tracks formerly utilizing Trakus will switch to the less expensive Total Performance Data-created Equibase GPS system (E-GPS). The New York Racing Association will now use E-GPS for in-race tracking, but rely on timing beams for official times. Other tracks utilizing E-GPS include: Gulfstream, Santa Anita, Golden Gate, Laurel, Del Mar, Turfway, Lone Star, and Woodbine.

Some tracks experienced timing issues in the early days of E-GPS; currently, E-GPS relies on a hybrid system utilizing timing beams to ensure accuracy of final times. Equibase's interim president Jim Gagliano said the beam instrument has been improved, and that additional information (like ground covered in a race) will eventually be offered via E-GPS.

Weekend Lineup: Malibu On Santa Anita’s Opening Day Could Decide 3-Year-Old Title

While much of the country is suffering through extreme cold and winter storms, officials at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., are preparing for their traditional day-after-Christmas opening on Monday, Dec. 26. Temperatures are expected in the upper 70s and there is no rain in the forecast for Monday, though a storm is expected to roll into Southern California on Tuesday.

This year's opening day features six graded stakes (three of them Grade 1) on an 11-race program that gets under way at 11 a.m. PT/2 p.m. ET. Highlight of the day figures to be the seven-furlong G1 Malibu, where a victory by two-time G1 winner Taiba would strengthen his chances for an Eclipse Award in the hotly contested 3-year-old male division. The G1 La Brea Stakes, the 3-year-old filly counterpart to the Malibu, is also on tap, as is the G1 American Oaks for 3-year-old fillies going 1 1/4 miles on turf.

Santa Anita's lid-lifter begins with the G2 Mathis Mile Stakes for 3-year-olds on turf and also includes the G2 San Gabriel for older turf runners going nine furlongs, as well as the G2 San Antonio on dirt for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 miles.

Other warm-weather tracks offering Monday stakes include Fair Grounds in New Orleans, which carded nine added-money races, two of which – the Untapable for 2-year-old fillies and Gun Runner for 2-year-olds – offer qualifying points for the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby, respectively.

Gulfstream Park has a pair of stakes on turf for 3-year-olds, the Tropical Park Derby and Tropical Park Oaks.

Only two tracks are open on Christmas Eve Saturday, Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs in Florida. There is no racing on the mainland U.S. on Christmas Day.

Here's a brief look at some of Monday's major stakes:

Monday

2:00 p.m. ET – Grade 2 Mathis Mile Stakes at Santa Anita

Balnikhov, coming off a stretch-running victory for trainer Phil D'Amato in the G3 Bryan Station going a mile at Keeneland, opted not to go in the G1 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar because the extra furlong may be more than this Irish-bred gelding wants to go.  He is 2-for-3 at a mile (the one loss being by a nose) and is 0-for-3 at 1 1/16 and 1 1/8 miles. Another Irish-bred gelding, I'm A Gambler, makes his U.S. debut for Mark Glatt and this 3-year-old already has 24 career starts, including 14 races in 2022.

Mathis Mile Entries

3:03 p.m. ET – Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes at Santa Anita

Phil D'Amato's barn is deep in turf performers and he's got the two favorites here in Masteroffoxhounds and Prince Abama. The former figures to be forwardly placed under Mike Smith, while Prince Abama and Flavien Prat are likely to be running late.  Bob and Jackie won this race in 2021 when it was taken off the turf, but the George Papaprodromou-trained 6-year-old is unraced since March 2022. Leonard Powell has two entries, with Dicey Mo Chara back at his best distance after running a dull race last out going 1 1/2 miles in the G2 Hollywood Turf Cup at Del Mar.

San Gabriel Entries

4:32 p.m. ET – Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes at Santa Anita

Bob Baffert-trained Country Grammer is gearing up for another invasion of Saudi Arabia, where he finished second in last year's $20 million Saudi Cup at 1 1/4 miles, so this race is obviously not his main target. He still towers over a weak six-horse field that includes two other Baffert runners, Hudson Ridge, who's done his best racing on turf, and lightly raced Hopkins, making his first stakes and two-turn start.  The latter is a threat to steal it under Juan Hernandez but he is unproven at a distance.

San Antonio Entries

5:35 p.m. ET – Grade 1 La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita

Hall of Famer Baffert has three runners in the San Antonio and four in the La Brea – half the field in both races (before any scratches). None of the eight starters has yet to win a G1, so this will be a good pedigree page result for someone. Sporting a record of four wins in five starts, Midnight Memories may be the best of the Baffert quartet and comes off a 3 1/4-length win in the G2 Zenyatta Stakes at Santa Anita in October at 1 1/16 miles. Her first two wins were sprinting at Santa Anita earlier this year, so the cutback in distance to seven furlongs shouldn't be a problem. If anyone is going to upset the Baffert apple cart, it might be Hot Peppers, sent west from New York by Rudy Rodriguez. Tyler Gaffalione will be riding her for the first time and this filly has speed and likes to win..

La Brea Entries

6:00 p.m. ET – Gun Runner Stakes at Fair Grounds

There don't appear to be any Epicenters in this second edition of the Gun Runner,  a race that served as a coming out party for the eventual G1 Kentucky Derby and G1 Preakness runner-up and G1 Travers winner. The morning line favorite, Jace's Road, was beaten 36 1/2 lengths last out in the G3 Street Sense Stakes at Churchill Downs, but the Quality Road colt from the Brad Cox barn may have left his race in the starting gate, acting up before the start as the 2-1 favorite. Jace's Road could be the lone speed in this lineup, and Florent Geroux certainly knows how to win on the front end.

Gun Runner Entries

6:39 p.m. ET – Grade 1 Runhappy Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita

If Eclipse Award voters have held out from voting (which they should until the final Grade 1 races of the year are run), they'll be paying special attention to this year's Malibu, since Taiba is in the running for 3-year-old champion despite a poor performance in his only Triple Crown race, the G1 Kentucky Derby in which he finished 12th behind Rich Strike and Epicenter.  The Gun Runner colt and Arkansas Derby and Haskell winner Cyberknife are the only leading contenders in the Eclipse Awards race with two G1 wins to their credit (Taiba won the Santa Anita and Pennsylvania Derbies and was beaten a head by Cyberknife in the Haskell). A third contender is Epicenter, now retired, who won the G1 Travers and was second in the first two legs of the Triple Crown. While morning line favorite in the Malibu, Taiba is no cinch. Forbidden Kingdom, with speed from the rail,  will have to be reeled in, and Wesley Ward ships Naktomi to Santa Anita from his Keeneland base in Kentucky off a good allowance score Nov. 5.

Runhappy Malibu Entries

7:11 p.m. ET – Grade 1 American Oaks at Santa Anita

This may be the best betting race on the Santa Anita opening day card, with 11 fillies looking for Grade 1 black type, including four East Coast invaders. The best of the out of towners might be Chad Brown-trained Salimah, but her last win was on yielding turf. Pizza Bianca has talent but was no match for Regal Glory last out in the G1 Matriarch. Trained by Christophe Clement throughout her career, she is now in Graham Motion's barn. Skims won the G2 Sands Point for Shug McGaughey last out and has the tactical speed that works so well on this grass course. Sparkle Blue is a second Graham Motion runner who comes off a strong score in Keeneland's Valley View. Joel Rosario  will be back aboard the Hard Spun filly.

American Oaks Entries

After Three-Year Blackout, Arizona Horseplayers To Get Stronach Track Simulcasts

The Arizona Racing Commission conducted a special meeting on Friday to approve simulcast agreements between the state's two major racetracks – Arizona Downs and Turf Paradise and tracks represented by Monarch Content Management LLC, a subsidiary of The Stronach Group.

The signals have been shut off nearly three years after Monarch balked at selling its signal to Arizona Downs and its off-track betting facilities, preferring to only do business with Turf Paradise and its OTBs.

The position by Monarch, in violation of a 2019 state law requiring all tracks to have equal opportunity and pricing of simulcast signals, led the Arizona Racing Commission in January 2020 to deny approval of the imported signals.

The commission voted 3-0 on several motions to approve Arizona Downs and Turf Paradise to receive signals from Golden Gate Fields, Gulfstream Park, Maryland Jockey Club (Laurel/Pimlico), Santa Anita  (all owned by The Stronach Group/1/ST) plus Lone Star and some international signals controlled by Monarch.

Turf Paradise owner Jerry Simms spoke briefly during the meeting to say simulcasting represents 25 to 30 percent of the track's business. The blackout has reduced revenue to racetracks and purses and angered horseplayers.

The contracts, which also will permit Arizona residents to bet on the Monarch tracks through advance-deposit wagering accounts, are to go into effect immediately.
