Pick 6 Carryover Of $16,850 Into Friday’s Card At Aqueduct

Friday's eight-race program at Aqueduct Racetrack will feature a Pick 6 carryover of $16,850 after the multi-race wager went unsolved on Thursday's eight-race card.

The $1 Pick 6 returned $374 to bettors who selected 5-of-6 horses correctly.

The sequence kicked off in Race 3 with the Peter Walder-trained Casalsa [No. 3, $7.10] taking an $8,000 claiming event under Eric Cancel. Howzyourcashflow [No. 1, $6.30] followed with a dominant 9 1/2-length score to graduate on debut in Race 4 under Manny Franco for trainer Rudy Rodriguez.

The sequence's largest price came in Race 5 when the David Donk trainee Shasi [No. 5, $43.60] broke her maiden for a $40,000 tag with Jorge Vargas, Jr. in the irons.

Apprentice rider Jose Gomez engineered a winning ride in Race 6 aboard favored Quickflash [No. 8, $6.10*] for trainer Natalia Lynch, one race before Eric Cancel scored his second win on the card when elevated to victory aboard the Linda Rice-trained Mommasgottarun [No. 8, $13.40] in Race 7.

With the carryover already confirmed, Donk and Vargas, Jr. teamed up again to take the final leg with Left Leaning Lucy [No. 4, $10.40] in Race 8, a $14,000 claiming sprint.

Friday's Pick 6 sequence will begin in Race 3 [1:47 p.m. Eastern]. First post is 12:50 p.m.

Rainy Forecast: Santa Anita Cancels Saturday Card, Reschedules Races

With a 100 percent chance of rain forecast for this Saturday, Santa Anita Park has announced it will proactively cancel Saturday's eight-race card.

In consultation with the CTT, TOC and CHRB, Saturday's races will be offered as extra races this Sunday, Monday, and Friday, Jan. 20. Originally scheduled for this Saturday, the Grade 3, $200,000 La Canada Stakes is currently listed as an extra race for this Sunday, with those races to be drawn later today. Friday, Jan. 20, was originally scheduled as a dark day after a holiday Monday race week.

“With the significant rain that we've experienced within the past week and with what is currently predicted for Saturday, we wanted to let our fans and horsemen know well in advance that we'll reschedule these races,” said Nate Newby, Santa Anita Senior Vice President and General Manager. “Although we've got wet weather in the forecast this weekend, it looks like we're going to be turning the corner and we look forward to sunny skies later next week.”

Although live racing has been cancelled this Saturday, Santa Anita will open for simulcast wagering beginning at 10 a.m.

Meadowlands Handle On Opening Weekend Tops $7 Million, 30 Percent Increase Over 2022

At a craps table, when a player rolls a seven, it's referred to as a natural.

Last weekend (Jan. 6-7) at The Meadowlands, it was the fans of the mile oval who were on a roll, and they made their point that betting is off to a huge start in 2023, as over $7 million was put in play over the course of the 28 races.

It was a natural that Big M management would be elated, especially when one considers how impressively wagering was up over just a year ago.

“The Meadowlands handle far exceeds the handle of any nighttime track in North America, including the Thoroughbreds,” said Big M Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Jason Settlemoir. “We have listened to our horseplayers and simulcast partners. The Big M has responded to what the wagering public desires. Check off the boxes. Competitive 10-horse fields, exciting mile-track racing, large pools, low takeouts, low minimums, chances to make scores, generous payouts and no jackpot wagers.

“The Meadowlands offers horseplayers from around the world the most exciting and popular wagering product on the continent every Friday and Saturday night.”

$7-million weekends were rare during 2022, as that barrier was busted only twice, the first on Meadowlands Pace weekend ($7.3 million) and the second during Hambletonian weekend ($10.4 million).

If last week is an indicator of things to come, maybe 2023 will be as exceptional a year as 2021, when the average nightly handle was $3 million.

Friday's total bet was $3,384,066 while Saturday's play was $3,673,861, for a grand total of $7,057,927.

On Saturday, the track's most popular multi-leg puzzles served as the catalysts.

In the first race, $287,355 was wagered, with $67,037 of that on the 20-cent Pick-5; $401,753 was bet on the sixth race as the Early 50-Cent Pick-4 took in $147,691; the 20-cent Pick-6 had a double carryover in the eighth race, creating a total pool of $111,677 and a race total of $332,459 before $513,320 was pushed through the windows on the 10th race, with $304,713 of that contributing to a Late Pick-4, that, including carryover, totaled $362,361.

Those four races alone totaled $1,534,887, good for an average per race of $383,721.

The comparison in weekend wagering from a year ago reveals a startling action uptick.

Last year, $2,630,290 was wagered on the comparable Friday while $2,797,927 was put in play on Saturday for a total of $5,428,217, figures that are anything but shabby.

However, the $7 million bet last weekend represents a 30 per cent increase over 2022. A year ago, the opening weekend average handle per race was $180,940, while this year, that number jumped to $252,068, an increase of better than $72,000.

The total handle was $1.6 million more this year as compared to last, and that was with two fewer races.

“There's always excitement in the building when our players get to bet into our pools that begin with carryovers,” said Settlemoir, “and thanks to low takeouts and carryovers, Saturday was no exception.”

Saturday's 20-cent Pick-6 began with a carryover of $22,812, which led to $88,164 in “new money” wagered for a total pool of $111,677.

Here comes what was the good part for players.

Since the carryover is not subject to the already low 15 per cent takeout, the total return to bettors was $97,751, a surplus of just under $9,600 (10 per cent). Winning tickets paid $7,565.

A Pick-4 carryover is a rarity, and the punters went deep, wagering $304,713 in “new money” for a total pool of $362,361, which led to a surplus of $11,941 (3 percent). Winning tickets were exchanged for $1,267.

Getting a return of 85 percent on a normal night is good, but getting a return of 110 or 103 per cent? “Anytime you can give the players an opportunity like that, it's good for them, and, obviously, good for business as well,” said Settlemoir.

Equibase Analysis: Equipment Change Has Silver Prospector Poised To Upset Fifth Season Stakes

Most of the 10 entrants in this Saturday's $150,000 Fifth Season Stakes at Oaklawn Park have very good credentials; in fact, the combined earnings of the field is more than $6 million.

Topping the list is last year's Fifth Season winner Rated R Superstar ($1.7 million), who has 13 career wins including the similar Jeffrey A. Hawk Memorial Stakes last month. Next there's Silver Prospector ($1.2 million), who won the G3 Southwest Stakes over the track three years ago and the G3 Steve Sexton Mile Stakes last spring.

Another recent stakes winner is Soy Tapatio, who took the Zia Park Championship Stakes when last seen in November. Dreamer's Disease, who won the Delta Mile Stakes in November, enters the race looking for his third win in a row.

Heart Rhythm stretches out to two-turns for only the second time in his career. It's his 24th career start and he showed he belongs at the level with a runner-up effort in the Thanksgiving Classic Stakes in November. Another top runner is Ginobili, who won the G2 Pat O'Brien Stakes last summer around one turn. King Fury was winless in five races last year but won the Bourbon Trail Stakes in the fall of 2021 and has shown sparks of that kind of form in a couple of races since.

Hello Hot Rod led from the start and into the stretch in the Jeffrey A. Hawk before fading to fourth and is one of the horses who is likely to be on, or very near, the lead from the start. Seize the Night led from start to finish to win an allowance race over the track last month and is another who could vie for the early lead but faces a big test at this level. Runnin' Ray ran the best race of his career when third in the G3 Oaklawn Mile Stakes last April over the track and won again in May but is winless in three races since then.

Top contenders:

Silver Prospector has run nine times at Oaklawn in his 24 race career, winning once and placing once so you might think he prefers other tracks as the majority of his $1.2 million in earnings has come elsewhere. That is not the case, as he earned the biggest win in his career over this track. That win came three years ago in the Southwest Stakes with a then career-best 107 ™ Equibase Speed Figure. One year later he finished second in the Oaklawn Handicap here in a huge effort when second to a six length winner, also earning a 107 figure. Silver Prospector then lost six more races in a row but showed his top form one more time last May when victorious at this mile trip in the Steve Sexton Mile, earning a new career-best 112 which is the best figure earned by any horse in this field. Rested since a poor effort last October, the reason I believe Silver Prospector can return to form good enough to win is the fact that he puts on blinkers for the very first time, and that change resulted in a very fast half-mile workout six days ago which was the second best of 87 on the day. Additionally, Silver Prospector won the Steve Sexton from the outside post in a field of nine, similar to the outside post he gets in this race, and he closed into a fast pace in that race, similar to the one he will get courtesy of need-the-lead types Hello Hot Rod, Dreamer's Disease and Seize the Night. If the assessment is correct the equipment change as well as returning to Oaklawn means Silver Prospector may be able to rebound to top form, and he could post the upset and win this year's Fifth Season Stakes.

Soy Tapatio really came into his own after changing trainers to Robertino Diodoro last summer. His first race for Diodoro was a six and one-half length win in the Manitoba Mile Stakes, earning a career-best 107 ™ figure. Since then Soy Tapatio has won two of four while losing by a neck on the wire in another. All four were stakes races and he earned 104 and 105 figures in the two wins. Since shipping into Oaklawn, Soy Tapatio has worked three times, with his most recent similar to Silver Prospector seven days ago where his half-mile workout was the second best of 47 on the day. Also similar to Silver Prospector, Soy Tapatio will appreciate the hot and contested early pace by at least three, perhaps four (including Ginobili) other horses, enabling him to potentially win for the fourth time in his last six races.

Rated R Superstar is now a nine year old but considering he won four of nine last year at the age of eight, earning $600K in the process, that's not a concern. Five of his 13 wins have come at Oaklawn and if he wins this race his earnings at this track alone will exceed $1 million. Last year Rated R Superstar won this race after returning from four months off and a runner-up finish. This year he enters the Fifth Season in even better form, as he won the Jeffrey A. Hawk Memorial Stakes one month ago following a three month rest. Jockey Castillo was aboard for the first time in that race and rides back. Even though Rated R Superstar only earned a 100 figure for his win last month and a 102 figure for his win before that last summer in the Governor's Cup Stakes, the 111 figure effort earned winning last year's Fifth Season would put him right there at the finish with Silver Prospector if that one ran his best race, leading to a very exciting finish.

The rest of the field, with their best ™ Equibase Speed Figures, is Dreamer's Disease (106), Ginobili (110), Heart Rhythm (105), Hello Hot Rod (103), King Fury (108), Runnin' Ray (106) and Seize the Night (104).
