Friday Weather Cancellations: Aqueduct, Charles Town, Meadowlands, Penn National

Live racing has been cancelled on Friday, Feb. 3, at the following racetracks: Aqueduct, Charles Town, Meadowlands, and Penn National.

Aqueduct

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) has canceled live racing on Friday and Saturday at Aqueduct Racetrack due to high winds and frigid temperatures forecast to impact the New York metropolitan area.

The National Weather Service (NWS), which aligns with forecasts provided by NYRA's independent weather services, is calling for wind chill values between zero and 10 degrees on Friday with wind gusts up to 37 mph, while Saturday's forecast includes wind chill values between eight and 10 degrees with sustained high winds throughout the day.

As a result, NYRA has canceled Friday's eight-race card and Saturday's nine-race card in the interest of the safety of all participants. Aqueduct Racetrack will remain open for simulcasting on Friday and Saturday, and online wagering is available through www.NYRABets.com.

Charles Town

Charles Town has canceled its Friday night card as frigid temperatures and windy conditions are forecasted to move through the area. With temperatures expected to be in the teens with wind chill values as low as -2 degrees throughout the night, the decision was made to cancel in the best interest of all participants.

As a result of the cancellation, Charles Town will add Wednesday, March 1 to its racing calendar.

Live racing is slated to resume on Saturday, February 4 at its standard first race post time of 7:00 P.M. ET.

Meadowlands

Due to tonight's freezing temperatures, the SBOANJ and the Meadowlands Racetrack have decided to cancel live racing for tonight, Friday, February 3.

The track remains open for simulcasting and sports wagering.

‘Turns Out Everyone’s Been Racing Wrong All These Years’: Horse Builds 50-Length Lead, Hangs On To Win

At Newcastle Racecourse on Tuesday, a horse ridden by his amateur owner built up a 50-length lead early in the two-mile contest and managed to hang on to win by 15 lengths at the wire. According to The Daily Star, the 5-year-old Jack Hyde and owner/jockey John Reddington won at odds of 100-30.

It was the fifth win in 50-year-old Reddington's career, reports Racing Post.

Trainer Thomas Gallagher told Racing Post: “I'm delighted for John especially. He knew how he needed to be ridden and did exactly just that. He needs to be ridden positively and John rode a really good, intelligent race with the way he did. To do it his way and to win like that made it a brilliant ride.”

“Always wanted to see what would happen if a horse went at it like this,” racing fan @BFCliam92 wrote on Twitter. “Turns out everyone's been racing wrong all these years.”

During the running of the race, commentator Derek Thompson said: “Look at this, this is incredible. I've never seen a horse so far clear! He must be 50 lengths clear. Jack Hyde is 50 lengths clear of the 13 other horses in this opener. And there's not far to go.

“He is still galloping. Where are the others? They're not even in camera shot. This is a marvelous win and a great ride from the owner and jockey John Reddington.”
