The road to the Kentucky Derby runs through Louisiana on Saturday and FanDuel TV will be live on-site at Fair Grounds with excusive coverage of the $400,000 Risen Star Stakes (G2) as the undefeated Victory Formation takes on a field of thirteen rivals.

FanDuel TV's Scott Hazelton, Gabby Gaudet, Dave Weaver, Todd Schrupp and Matt Bernier will be reporting live with exclusive interviews, expert analysis and behind-the-scenes coverage of the thirteen-race card which includes five stakes races. Victory Formation is undefeated from three starts and one of three horses in the race for trainer Brad Cox. A $350,000 purchase as a juvenile, he earned his first black-type victory last time out at Oaklawn Park in the Smarty Jones Stakes and will have Flavien Prat in the irons for his graded stakes debut. His rivals include graded stakes winner Two Phil's, last seen finishing second in the Lecomte Stakes (G3) for trainer Larry Rivelli and jockey Jareth Loveberry.

The race will feature the much-anticipated three-year-old debut of graded stakes winner Hoosier Philly. A daughter of Into Mischief trained by Tom Amoss, she won the first three starts of her juvenile campaign and will have regular rider Edgar Morales aboard.

NYRA Cross Country Pick 5 On Saturday Features Aqueduct, Tampa Bay Downs, Oaklawn

The New York Racing Association Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday, featuring action from Aqueduct Racetrack, Tampa Bay Downs, and Oaklawn Park.

The Cross Country Pick 5 requires bettors to pick the winner of five select races from tracks across the country. The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country with each week featuring a mandatory payout of the net pool. The Cross Country Pick 5, boasting a low 15 percent takeout, will continue each Saturday in February and March, offering sequences with races from Aqueduct Racetrack and partner tracks across the country.

Saturday's sequence kicks off at 3:55 p.m. Eastern at Aqueduct in Race 7, a one-mile maiden special weight for sophomores. The field of 10 is headlined by Klaravich Stables' Power in Numbers, who makes his second start for four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown. The son of Girvin finished a clear second in his January 14 debut 6 1/2 lengths behind Clubhouse, who exited that race to post a runner-up finish in the Jimmy Winkfield on Saturday. Brown will also send out the uncoupled McCullough, who enters with a pair of fifth-place finishes.

Trainer David Donk will hope to see Robert Spiegel's promising Register finish one better than his previous two outings when second in a pair of January maiden tilts. The son of Super Saver is a half-brother to 2021 Grade 2 Saratoga Special winner High Oak. The Linda Rice-trained Ride Up and Todd Pletcher-trained There Be Dragons will also look to improve from previous on-the-board efforts in their last outings.

The second leg will feature stakes action from Tampa Bay Downs as older fillies and mares contest at five furlongs over the lawn in the Lightning City [Race 8, 4:17 p.m.]. The competitive field of 12 boasts eight last-out winners, including the Kelly Breen-trained Train to Artemus, who won an optional claimer going the Lightning City distance on January 18 at Gulfstream Park. There, the daughter of Tapizar raced prominently under Junior Alvarado and made a determined run down the lane to win by a nose. The victory was awarded an 86 Beyer Speed Figure.

Three other entrants boast last-out victories that garnered Beyers in the 80s, led by the speedy Trevess for trainer Laura Cazares. The 6-year-old daughter of Kantharos arrives from a one-length optional claiming score sprinting five furlongs on January 15 at Gulfstream where she brushed the gate and tracked in second along the rail before unleashing a strong turn of foot down the lane to stop the clock in a final time of 55.84 seconds.

Action returns north to the Big A for the middle leg as eight older sprinters line up for a six-furlong open allowance in Race 8 [4:26 p.m.]. Today's Flavor has been flawless in his three starts against fellow New York-breds since being transferred to trainer George Weaver this fall, led by a pair of 8 1/2-length scores at the Big A in November and December, respectively. He followed with a last-out 3 1/2-length optional claiming score on January 7, which garnered a 93 Beyer.

Steep opposition will be provided by the Amira Chichakly-trained Russian to Win, who posted a strong bullet work on February 11 when covering a half-mile in 47.60 seconds over the Belmont dirt training track. The Kentucky-bred son of Cairo Prince was last seen landing a 3 3/4-length victory on January 20 in a seven-furlong allowance over a muddy and sealed Big A and has won two of his last three starts. Twelth Man, who has been on-the-board in his last three starts, will provide interest as he looks to score his third victory for conditioner Michelle Nevin.

The penultimate leg will see action move south to Tampa for Race 10 [5:20 p.m.], the five-furlong Turf Dash featuring an overflow field of older horses. The consistent Panther Island will look to notch his first stakes victory in his first start for trainer Laura Cazares after being haltered for $62,500 out of a narrow defeat on January 19 at Gulfstream. The son of Speightstown has won four of his six lifetime starts, his two losses coming by margins of a nose and a head, respectively. His best performance was a 5 1/2-furlong optional claiming score in October that garnered a 90 Beyer after he went head-to-head with next-out winner Mamba On Three throughout before inching away to a one-length score.

The Critical Way brings graded stakes form to the field in his first start off a nearly five-month layoff after finishing sixth in the Lucky Coin in September at Saratoga Race Course. The Jose Delgado trainee earned his first graded victory in August 2021 in the Grade 3 Parx Dash in exciting fashion with a nose score over Battle Station.

The sequence concludes in Hot Springs, Ark., with graded stakes action from Oaklawn Park. The Grade 3 Razorback Handicap [Race 9, 5:42 p.m.] will see the return of graded stakes winner Law Professor after his dominant 7 1/2-length victory in the Queens County on January 7 at the Big A for trainer Rob Atras. The son of Constitution was a game runner-up to Life Is Good in the Grade 1 Woodward in October and scored a Grade 2 victory in an off-the-turf edition of the Mathis Mile in December 2021.

Gary and Mary West's West Will Power also makes an anticipated return to the races on the heels of a close runner-up finish to Proxy in the Grade 1 Clark in November at Churchill Downs. The Brad Cox trainee earned his lone graded victory two starts back with an emphatic 6 3/4-length score in the Grade 2 Fayette in October at Keeneland where he was awarded a 102 Beyer.

The Peter Miller-trained Ginobili, who won the Fifth Season at Oaklawn last out, looms as a serious threat from post 4 while the duo of Grade 1-placed Caddo River and graded stakes-winner Last Samurai for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas will look to play spoiler from posts 10 and 7, respectively.

Equibase Analysis: Tapit’s Conquest, ‘Other Brad Cox,’ Rates On Top Of 14-Strong Risen Star

This Saturday's Grade 2, $400,000 Risen Star Stakes at the Fair Grounds is the first of 16 Road to the Derby Championship Series races offering 50 or more points to the winner, which will likely enable that horse's connections to choose to enter the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby in just under three months. Points are also awarded down to fifth place, particularly important to horses which are just getting started on the Derby Trail this year.

Leading the 14 horse field in terms of accomplishments are a trio of stakes winners in Curly Jack, Two Phil's, and Victory Formation, but all three get potentially disadvantageous outside post positions in this big field. Curly Jack, who makes his first start as a 3-year-old, won the G3 Iroquois Stakes in September and was runner-up behind division leader Instant Coffee in the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at the end of November. Two Phil's won the G3 Street Sense Stakes in October and finished second to Instant Coffee last month in the G3 Lecomte Stakes. Victory Formation is undefeated in three races including the Smarty Jones Stakes on New Year's Day, in which Angel of Empire finished second.

Then there's Private Creed, who is trying dirt for the first time in the seventh start of his career but who has never been worse than third to date including the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. Determinedly finished third in the Gun Runner Stakes in late December before a game neck victory over the track four weeks ago in a highly rated race where Tapit's Conquest and Silver Heist finished close behind in second and third, respectively. Harlocap is another who could improve to compete at this level as he easily won a race in California last month and now moves to the barn of Steve Asmussen.

Crupi might be interesting to some as he has yet to earn a win in five races, but not only did he miss by a head in his most recent race, which came following two months off, he is the only entrant in the race trained by Todd Pletcher, whose Litigate won the Sam F. Davis Stakes last weekend. Sun Thunder may improve off his fourth place effort in the G2 Southwest Stakes on Jan. 28, run on a sloppy track. Trainer Keith Desormeaux, who 10 years ago saddled Ive Struck a Nerve to victory in this race, paying $272 for a $2 bet, saddles last out maiden winner Single Ruler. Shaq Diesel and Quiet as Midnight round out the field.

Top win contenders:

Tapit's Conquest has yet to run in a stakes but appears to have the most potential to improve and make his mark in the division. Starting his career last summer at Saratoga in a sprint, the colt improved markedly when trying two turns in his second start, opening up by four lengths in the stretch and coasting home in a field of 10. Rested over two months, Tapit's Conquest made his 3-year-old debut four weeks ago on Jan. 1 at Fair Grounds over a mile and one-sixteenth. In spite of being away for a long time, Tapit's Conquest rallied from fifth to miss by a neck on the wire. The winner was Determinedly, who had run much more recently and who was ahead by three lengths with an eighth of a mile to run. Tapit's Conquest should run much better in his second start off a layoff and second as a 3-year-old, and we can expect him to take another big step forward off the career-best 98 ™ Equibase® Speed Figure earned in that race. With the exception of the 99 figure Private Creed earned on turf last month when second in the Texas Turf Mile Stakes, the figures Determinedly and Tapit's Conquest earned are the highest dirt figures in the field. Considering Tapit's Conquest should improve off his last effort and that the colt put in a very sharp fourth best of 62 five furlong workout coming into this race, he gets top billing to win this year's Risen Star Stakes.

Two Phil's is also making his second start as a 3-year-old and that could give him an edge over horses which either have not run this year or those which have run more than once this year. After a poor seventh place effort in the Breeders' Futurity last October, also his first try around two turns, Two Phil's proved his belongs in the division with a decisive five length win in the Street Sense Stakes three week later, earning a career best 93 ™ figure. Rested almost three months, Two Phil's returned in the Lecomte Stakes, the same race 2022 Kentucky Jockey Club winner Instant Coffee made his sophomore debut in. After rallying from fifth to get within a head of the lead at the top of the stretch, Two Phil's was no match for Instant Coffee and ended up second, beaten two and one-half lengths but more importantly was five and one-quarter lengths ahead of the third horse. Earning a new career-best 95 figure for that effort, Two Phil's also has tremendous upside for improvement in his second start off the layoff and every right to run well enough to win.

Silver Heist has potential to post the upset in this race as he will be ignored by bettors favoring horses with stakes experience, or just more experience in general. The colt is making only the third start of his career and is the most lightly raced entrant in the field. On the other hand he's a son of Tapit (also the sire of Tapit's Conquest), who has sired a high number of top 3-year-olds the past few years. He's also one of three trained by Steve Asmussen (the other two being Harlocap and Private Creed). Silver Heist was making only the second start of his career and first start in a route last month in the race won by Determinedly and in which Tapit's Conquest finished second, and he was only one length behind the winner. The 96 figure earned was pretty strong and logically can be improved upon in his second route and third start. Better still he put in a :59.4 five-furlong workout in preparation for the race which was the best of the day at the distance.

Determinedly won that race at Fair Grounds last month leading from start to finish with a 98 figure which would be competitive in the Risen Star if repeated, but he has also won from off the pace as well as he did two races before that. In between those two efforts came a third place finish as the odds-on favorite in the Gun Runner Stakes at Fair Grounds so it may be more difficult to predict a repeat of his last effort, particularly as jockey Luis Saez, who rode Determinedly in his last four races, gets off to ride Angel of Empire. Nevertheless, I would not argue with anyone who believes he can win.

Victory Formation has to be mentioned as win contender if for no other reason than he's undefeated in three starts. He's also one of three from the formidable Brad Cox barn (the other two being Tapit's Conquest and Angel of Empire). Stretching out to two turns for the first time in the Smarty Jones Stakes to start the year, Victory Formation led every step of the way, widening to a three length margin which could have been more as he was ridden out in the late stages. As such, the 97 figure Victory Formation earned can be improved upon. Although leading from start to finish in the Smarty Jones, the colt showed he could win from off the pace prior to that when stalking in second in the early stages and the win last time out came from the outside in a field of eight. However, the 13 post he may break from in this field is a bit more problematic so I am not sure he can repeat those efforts. It must be noted Cox saddled Mandaloun to win this race in 2021 on a very similar pattern to Victory Formation so he can't be ruled out as a win contender in this very deep and contentious field.

The rest of the field, with their best representative ™ Equibase® Speed Figures, is Angel of Empire (92), Curly Jack (91), Crupi (99), Harlocap (97), Private Creed (115 on turf), Quiet as Midnight (65), Shaq Diesel (84), Single Ruler (92) and Sun Thunder (92).

Two Phil's
Silver Heist
Determinedly
