NHC Day One: Louisiana Dentist Boustany Atop Leaderboard

After an electric first day at the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) National Horseplayers Championship (NHC), presented by Caesars Entertainment, Horseshoe Las Vegas, and Racetrack Television Network (RTN) on Friday, Francis Boustany of Lafayette, La., leads the record field of 779 entries. Boustany amassed a bankroll of $149.40, after all players wagered on 18 races from around North America, including eight mandatory races.

Boustany, 72, has been handicapping for decades and has made six prior appearances to the NHC. A dentist by trade, he grew up watching the greats like Secretariat and fell in love with horses. He calls himself a student of pedigrees, handicapping, and pace, and hopes that his lead can hold up through the weekend. When asked how he felt about finishing in first place he said one word, “shocked.” In addition to bragging rights, Boustany wins himself a $10,000 berth at the 2023 BCBC for finishing atop the Caesar's Race and Sports Book NHC Leaderboard at the end of NHC day one.

Right on his tail is Albion J. Benton with a bankroll of $135.30 finishing in second, Cara Yarusso with $133.40 in third, Ken Seeman with $129.20 in fourth, and Paul Cush with 128.80 in fifth. The action will kick back off at the Horseshoe Event Center Saturday morning with another eight mandatory and 10 optional races.

The 2023 NHC winner, who will be named on Sunday at the conclusion of the Final Table, will take home a whopping $800,000, up from last year's grand prize of $725,000. Total cash prizes to be offered over the three days are a record $3,115,350, a 33% increase over last year. The 2022 NHC paid out the top 68 finishers. This year, the top 78 finishers will take home prize money. The full prize structure can be found online.

Charity Challenge Set for Saturday

Additionally, the field is set for the ninth Annual NHC Charity Challenge, presented by NTRA Charities. The invitation-only field will compete for the $10,000 charitable prize pool, which is double what was donated last year. $5,000 is set to be donated to the winner's charity of choice and an additional $2,500 will be donated to each the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. HorsePlayers.com hosts the online event.

The one-day contest, happening Saturday March 11, will see contestants play eight races selected by the NTRA from the same tracks as those playing in the NHC. Last year Michael Canale won the  Charity Challenge with a final bankroll of $87.30 from eight contest races. Canale selected the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance to receive a $2,500 donation in his name to go along with another $2,500 committed to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.

Defending Charity Challenge winner Canale will attempt a title defense and other past winners expected to participate include: Jimmy McNerney (2021), Jude Feld (2020), Dawn Lupul (2019), Ed DeRosa (2018), Ellis Starr (2017), and Matt Bernier (2016). Inaugural winner Bob Neumeier passed away in October 2021.

Similar to the NHC format, players will select one horse to Win and Place in eight races using a “Pick and Pray” format. All selections are due Saturday morning and any scratches will result in the player being assigned the post-time favorite. The player with the highest hypothetical bankroll after the final contest race will be declared the winner. In the event of a tie, there will be no playoff; the donations will be split among the winners.

More on This Year's NHC

The NHC, the world's richest and most prestigious handicapping contest, features more than 600 top horseplayers competing for more than $3.1 million in cash and prizes. All qualifiers will received a complimentary four night stay at the Horseshoe Las Vegas and travel reimbursements which total more than $1 million.

The tournament format for the NHC is meant to be the best possible test of overall handicapping ability by picking winners. Players attempt to earn the highest possible bankroll based on mythical $2 Win and Place wagers. Assigned “mandatory” races – eight per day on Day 1 and Day 2, and seven at the Final Table – are announced at least 36 hours prior to each contest day via direct e-mail to players and publicly on Twitter (@NTRA) and NTRA.com.

The NHC field will be reduced to the top 10 percent of players after the first two days. The highest 10 cumulative scores after the Semifinals round on Sunday morning will fill out the Final Table. Bankrolls amassed during Day 1, Day 2 and the Semifinals round will roll over to the Final Table, with the 10 finalists settling the NHC score in seven “mandatory” assigned races.

In addition to its three presenting sponsors ― Caesars Entertainment, Horseshoe Las Vegas and RTN ― the NHC is supported by official partners Daily Racing Form, EquinEdge, Four Roses Bourbon and Race Lens.

Interested spectators will have the ability to watch and listen to the action unfurling at the NHC all weekend in multiple places. Rachel McLaughlin, racing analyst at Horseshoe Indianapolis, will be hosting the NHC broadcast which will be available on all NTRA social media platforms. Additionally, At the Races with Steve Byk will broadcast live on SiriusXM satellite radio (Sirius 219; XM 201) from the Horseshoe Las Vegas and online at www.stevebyk.com daily, from 9-12 a.m. ET/6-9 a .m. Record Last Chance/First Chance Participation; NHC Begins Friday With 779 Entries

The final chance to qualify for the 2023 National Horseplayers Championship (NHC) yielded a record 28 seats into this weekend's contest which begins Friday morning at the Horseshoe Las Vegas. Five berths to #NHC2023 were guaranteed, with an additional spot added for every 20 entries beyond 140. Thursday's contest saw a record 752 entries, a more than 40% increase above last year's previous record of 532. Another 159 entries played for 6 NHC berths for 2024 NHC.

A retired history teacher and day camp owner from New York, George Novick finished on top of the field. “I use the pick and pray approach, and had all my races selected before coming today. I'm very excited to play through the weekend.” Novick hasn't attended an NHC since back when it was held at Treasure Island. He owns one horse with a partner and calls this his hobby.

The top three finishers shared in a cash prize pool equal to 30% of entry fees, with the balance of entry fees going to the NHC prize pool. In addition to the NHC seats, Novick took home $56,400, Kris Andaur earned $37,600 for second, and Michael Caposio got $18,800 for third. Full leaderboard results can be found here.

Equibase Analysis: Longshot Prairie Hawk Poised For Big Effort In Tampa Bay Derby

This Saturday's Grade 2, $400,000 Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby brings together a field of 12, each with an opportunity to earn important points on the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” which are awarded to the top five finishers. Seven horses exit the local prep for this race, the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes, run four weeks ago, though not the winner (Litigate).

Sam F. Davis runner-up Groveland, third-place finisher Classic Car Wash, and fourth-place finisher Classic Legacy all hope to improve and become strong factors in the next two months leading to the first Saturday in May.

The other three horses exiting the Sam F. Davis may have their work cut out for them. That group includes likely pacesetter Zydeceaux, who won the Pasco Stakes in January before a fifth-place effort last month. Another two are Dreaming of Kona and Champions Dream, who finished seventh and 11th, respectively, in the Sam F. Davis. Prairie Hawk made a mid-race move in the Sam F. Davis to go from eighth to fourth before fading to ninth.

Similarly, Lord Miles tries his hand on Florida's west coast after a sixth of eight finish in the G3 Holy Bull Stakes five weeks ago. Freedom Road stretches out to two turns for the first time off a strong win at Tampa Bay Downs in January and hopes to run as well at this longer distance.

Then there's the pair of horses trained by Todd Pletcher in the form of Tapit Trice and Shesterkin. They enter this race off a one-two finish in a highly rated race at Tampa Bay Downs last month at the distance of this Tampa Bay Derby, with Tapit Trice having drawn off by eight lengths at the end to beat his stablemate.

Last but not least is Mikey Bananas, who finished second four weeks ago over the track in an allowance level race.

Top Win Contenders:

With Tapit Trice the one to beat on paper (more on him later), I want to first take a long look at Prairie Hawk, who was decently regarded by bettors at 8-1 odds in the Sam F. Davis but who ended up ninth. In his three previous races, Prairie Hawk had been first or second after a quarter mile had been run, winning both of his two-turn races, the second of the two with a 91 ™ Equibase® Speed Figure which would be highest earned by any horse in this field if not for the 96 figure earned by Tapit Trice in his last two starts. In that last race, Prairie Hawk was bumped at the break and failed to establish the good early position he had in his previous two turn races; that likely cost him as he was eighth after a quarter mile then moved up quickly to sixth then to fourth before that rally took its toll.

Even though he gets the extreme outside post for the Tampa Bay Derby, Prairie Hawk may get good position out of the gate because the horse just inside of him, Zydeceaux, is a need-the-lead type who should go fast to get as close to the rail as possible before the first turn. Similarly, Dreaming of Kona and Groveland have “early” running styles, so Tampa Bay Downs leading jockey Samy Camacho may be in a good position stalking the pacesetters going into that first turn. If so, and if the colt runs the same or better as he did in his win on Jan. 12, he has potential to run a lot better than his odds may suggest he will. One more factor in his favor is his pedigree as he is by Curlin, sire of many a top 3-year-old over the years, and his dam produced 2018 Tampa Bay Derby winner Quip as well.

Tapit Trice has earned back-to-back 96 ™ Figures which are better than any horse in the field. Nevertheless, although winning both races, the most recent by eight lengths, they were both one-turn races so this is a new task. As a son of Tapit there's little doubt the colt has the pedigree to compete favorably on the Derby trail and certainly trainer Todd Pletcher has a strong history with 3-year-olds, but just the same it can be tough to bet a horse at very low odds being asked to do something for the first time as is the case here.

Todd Pletcher has another competitor in Shesterkin, who is the most lightly raced horse in the field, having run just twice. He won his debut authoritatively on New Year's Eve then finished second by eight lengths to Tapit Trice last month. Interestingly enough, Shesterkin pretty much ran second from start to finish in the race, passed by his stablemate while the early leader faded. That is likely the reason blinkers go on for today's race, not for early speed but to help him focus in the late stages as perhaps he was distracted last time out. Having earned 84 and 82 figures for his first two races to date, he might have some more fight in him this time and that makes him a contender.

Classic Legacy is similar to Prairie Hawk in that he won easily one race before last then didn't fire in the Sam F. Davis when checking in fourth. Still, he has improved his figures in his last three races, from 82 to 84 to 86. Additionally the colt is making his second start after a two month layoff and gets the services of Irad Ortiz, Jr. for Bill Mott, who trained his half-brother Art Collector to win the Pegasus World Cup. A horse with this kind of pedigree in the hands of a Hall-of-Fame trainer is one we should consider as a contender in this year's Tampa Bay Derby as well.

The rest of the field, with their best ™ Equibase Speed Figures, is Champions Dream (85), Classic Car Wash (86), Dreaming of Kona (81), Freedom Road (84), Groveland (89), Lord Miles (80), Mikey Bananas (88) and Zydeceaux (85).

Tapit Trice
Shesterkin
Classic Legacy
