NHC Rundown: Olsson Double Qualifies For NHC 2022

Each week, the NTRA will provide a rundown of those who have qualified for the National Horseplayers Championship (NHC) the previous weekend. A total of five players earned automatic entries into the 2022 NHC from May tournaments on Horseplayers.com and on HorseTourneys. Chris Olsson of Bellmore, N.Y., qualified last Saturday through on Horseplayers.com and on Sunday gained a second NHC qualifying spot playing on HorseTourneys.

The NHC is the most important tournament of the year for horseplayers and is the culmination of a year-long series of NTRA-sanctioned local tournaments conducted by racetracks, casino race books, off-track betting facilities and horse racing and handicapping websites, each of which sends its top qualifiers to the national finals. The 2021 NHC is slated to take place in the Bally's Events Center from August 27-29 with the 2022 NHC set for January 28-30 at Bally's.

Last weekend's qualifiers, and their respective contest sites, are as follows:

Horseplayers

Christophe Huttepain of Los Angeles, has qualified for his third NHC. In his first NHC, in 2015, Chris finished 24th, and cashed for $17,400.

Geoffrey Schutt of Salem, Mass., has qualified for his fourth NHC. In 2017, he bankrolled $9,500, finishing 52nd overall. Geoff finally qualified for his first NHC in his ninth attempt. “I realized I needed to change my handicapping completely because it wasn't just the horses, it was trying to learn (and handicap) other players who seemed to be doing everything right,” he recalled. “I know racing luck is a big thing, but there are players who consistently do well, and who consistently make the NHC (and win tournaments). So I tried to study the picks they made. It's been a huge thrill each time I've qualified since, and last Friday's Pick-and-Pray contest is no exception.”

Gregg Kingma of Las Vegas, has qualified for three of the past four years for the NHC.

HorseTourneys

Chris Olsson of Bellmore, N.Y., has qualified for his fifth NHC. His best finish was 26th in 2017, cashing for $15,600. Chris described qualifying twice last weekend for the NHC as “surreal,” and “just feel fortunate that a couple of photos fell my way.” On Saturday, Chris nailed three consecutive races, starting with a $28.80, 10.80 win-place payout on Philo, who won the 12th at Gulfstream by a nose. Later at Santa Anita, Big Passion paid $28.40 with a half-length win in the sixth race, and right after that Niege Blanche ($13.40) won the Grade 3 Santa Barbara Stakes by a nose.

In registering his second 2022 NHC qualification on Sunday, Chris scored on Sanctuary City ($15.40) in the seventh at Belmont and then hit it big with Kanderel coming from behind in the stretch to take the fifth at Santa Anita,  and paying $31.40. Two more 7-2 shots “sealed the deal.”

As a teenager, Chris got interested in harness racing first, going to the Roosevelt Raceway on Long Island with his father before gravitating to Thoroughbreds. He credits Noel Michaels' book on tournament play and the contests and seminars that Michaels and Steve Phillips organized at Nassau OTB that were “instrumental” in Chris's improvement as a contest player.

Phil Hoedebeck of Wichita Falls, Texas, is now a 10-time NHC qualifier. He finished 20th in 2012 and 58th last year, cashing for $11,110. Last Sunday, Phil hit four of his last five races, including Runaway Rumor ($21.60) at Belmont and, like Olsson, bagged Kanderel ($31.40) at Santa Anita. Phil started playing the races in the Southwest at Remington Park, Blue Ribbon Downs and Louisiana Downs. He also owns a few claiming horses with friends, and races them at Will Rogers Downs and Lone Star Park.

Breeders’ Cup Launches HorsePlayers Happy Hour Tour

Breeders' Cup announces the launch of the HorsePlayers Happy Hour Tour (“HorsePlayers Tour”) hosted by In the Money Media (ITMM), which will begin Thursday, April 8, at 3:00 p.m. ET. The HorsePlayers Tour will coincide with the popular HorsePlayers Happy Hour livestream featuring ITMM's Matt Bernier, Peter Fornatale and Jonathon Kinchen. Each week fans at home can play along with the ITMM team for a chance to earn tour points and qualify for the season-ending playoffs. One $10,000 Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge (BCBC) seat will be awarded to the player that finishes first on the regular season leaderboard and another will be awarded to the winner of the playoffs.

The HorsePlayers Tour kicks off on April 8 with a $20 feeder contest on HorsePlayers.com, where sign-ups are currently live. In addition to the tour benefits, the designated contests will also award one seat per 65 entries into that weekend's $179 BCBC qualifier on HorsePlayers.com. For more information and complete rules, visit BreedersCup.com/Happy-Hour-Tour.

Breeders' Cup will donate all proceeds from the HorsePlayers Tour online contests to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and the Thoroughbred Retirement Fund. In 2020, Breeders' Cup raised over $6,500 for its charity partners through the HorsePlayers Happy Hour program.

“HorsePlayers are the heartbeat of our sport and this exciting new format is a great way to keep them engaged all season long and reward them for playing in our online contests,” said Justin McDonald, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Breeders' Cup. “Being able to follow along and interact with the In the Money Media team during our weekly livestreams is a unique and fun component of the tour that new and avid fans will really enjoy.”

Each week players participating in the designated HorsePlayers Tour feeder contest will have a chance to earn tour points and qualify for the year-end playoffs. Points will be awarded to the top ten finishers each week, starting with 100 points to the winner and descending in increments of 10 points to each respective place below that, with 10 points awarded to the 10th-place finisher. The top eight scores for each player during the regular season will be used to calculate the final leaderboard scores. The person with the highest overall score will be declared the regular season winner and earn a $10,000 BCBC seat.

Once the regular season concludes, there will be an 80-player playoff that will consist of the top two finishers from each of the weekly HorsePlayers Tour contests, as well as the remaining top finishers on the regular season leaderboard who have not already qualified. Playoffs will start the week of Sept. 20 with 80 total players and be narrowed down to 40 players the week of Sept. 27, 20 players the week of Oct. 4, and 10 players the week of Oct. 18 for the Final Table. This schedule is subject to change. The Final Table participants will compete during a special livestream format that will be broadcast as the final show of the season, with the winner earning a $10,000 BCBC seat. Players can have up to three entries at the start of the playoffs, but only one entry can advance to the Final Table.

For schedule updates, more information and complete rules, visit BreedersCup.com/Happy-Hour-Tour.

To participate, players must have a valid Horseplayers.com account. NHC Qualifier on Horseplayers.com Offers Seats to NHC2021 and NHC2022

With the National Horseplayers Championship postponed from its traditional February dates due to COVID-19 and re-scheduled for August, the NTRA today announced that a Last Chance/First Chance qualifier has been added to the calendar Feb. 13. The contest will provide an opportunity for players to qualify to either the Aug. 27-29, 2021 NHC or the Jan. 28-30, 2022 NHC.

The Last Chance/First Chance qualifier will be held on HorsePlayers.com, and the entry fee will be $500. Two NHC seats will be guaranteed to NHC 2021 plus travel and hotel accommodations. The qualifier will offer a maximum of two seats to the 2022 NHC. Only individuals who have already won two qualifying seats into NHC 2021 may compete for a seat in NHC 2022. One additional qualifying seat to the 2021 NHC will be awarded for every 20 entries over the first 80 entries. The NHC seats include travel and hotel accommodations. NHC 2021 Tour points will be awarded.

Traditionally the National Horseplayers Championship (NHC) presented by Racetrack Television Network, Caesars Entertainment and Bally's would be held in Las Vegas the weekend after the Super Bowl. Due to the pandemic, the 2021 NHC has been moved to the last weekend in August in Las Vegas. The traditional onsite 'Last Chance First Chance' contest will still be held at Bally's on the eve of the NHC.

A player must be a 2021 NHC Tour member to be eligible to win a 2022 seat and receive 2021 NHC Tour points.
