Graded Winner Victim Of Love Stars In Friday’s Stronach 5 Wager

Five races at four tracks comprise Friday's Stronach 5, including the return of graded stakes winner Victim of Love.

The Stronach 5 will feature races from Laurel Park, Santa Anita Park, Gulfstream Park and Golden Gate Fields as well as an industry-low 12-percent takeout. The Stronach 5 continues to show a strong return in investment. The multi-track wager returned $511.70 Feb. 12 with only one winner returning more than $5.40. The Stronach 5 was cancelled last week due to inclement weather in Maryland.

Friday's sequence begins with Laurel's ninth race, a six-furlong optional allowance claimer with 7-5 favorite Victim of Love, who will be making her first start since finishing third in the Ballerina (G1) Aug. 8 at Saratoga. The 5-year-old mare won the Vagrancy (G3) last year and was third in the Fritchie (G3) at Laurel.

Santa Anita's third race, a maiden special weight event on a mile turf course for California bred or sired 3-year-old fillies, serves as the second leg of the Stronach 5. Big Beauty is the 9-5 favorite off a second-place finish in her debut Jan. 17. Trainer Craig Lewis sends out Warrens Candy Girl, second last out in the Leigh Ann Howard California Cup Oaks.

Gulfstream's eighth race, a mile turf event for $35,000 3-year-old claimers, serves as the third leg of the sequence. Leading jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. has the mount on 3-1 favorite Hard Game who will break from the rail after being claimed last out by Guadalupe Preciado. Onemoretimearound makes his first start after being claimed by trainer by Danny Gargan. Tyler Gaffalione has the mount.

The Stronach 5 swings back to Laurel for Race 10, a $10,000 maiden claimer for 3-year-olds at six furlongs. Get Lit is the 7-5 favorite. The Anthony Lynch-trained son of Algorithms drops from $25,000 maiden competition and gets blinkers.

Golden Gate's third race, a $10,000 claiming event for 3-year-old fillies, concludes the Stronach 5 with a 9-5 favorite in Big Award, who drops out of maiden special weight company for trainer Tim Yakteen. Tama's Arch (5-1), fourth in her debut Jan. 29, gets the rail for trainer Jack Steiner.

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.

Friday’s Stronach 5 Features Races From Four Tracks, Pair Of Heavy Favorites

The Stronach 5 goes coast-to-coast Friday, with races from Laurel Park, Santa Anita Park, Gulfstream Park and Golden Gate Fields along with an industry-low 12-percent takeout.

The Stronach 5 continues to show a strong return on investment. Multiple winning tickets last week returned $511.70 despite the fact only one winner returned more than $5.40. A couple of 7-5 favorites late in Friday's sequence makes things interesting.

Friday's Stronach 5 begins with Laurel's ninth race, an allowance event for Maryland-bred or sired horses at 5 ½ furlongs. It's a wide-open race with a 4-1 tepid favorite in Stone Courageous. Mice and Men returns off two troubled trips and leading trainer Claudio Gonzalez sends out Baptize the Boy.

The action moves to Santa Anita for its third race, a 6 ½ furlong event on the turf for California-bred or sired maidens. In Vronsky Style debuts for trainer Phil D'Amato. The gelding draws the rail and is the 5-2 morning-line favorite. Queen's Code goes out for trainer Carla Gaines. The 4-year-old finished third in his debut on the turf Nov. 22 at Del Mar and fourth on the main track Jan. 1 at Santa Anita. Doug O'Neill sends out Square Root, a first-time gelding who gets the blinkers off.

Laurel's 10th race, a $10,000 maiden claiming event at seven furlongs, serves as the third leg of the Stronach 5, and it's a wide-open field of 14 with Pardon the Pun the 5-2 morning-line favorite off three consecutive runner-up placings at this level. War Light drops in class for trainer Kelly Rubley off a fifth-place finish against $40,000 maiden claimers around two turns. Lifespan, who has four second-place finishes in 10 starts, is listed at 3-1.

Gulfstream's ninth race serves as the fourth leg of the Stronach 5. The allowance optional claiming event at five furlongs on the turf for state bred fillies and mares has a 7-5 favorite in Daddy's Joy, who turns back from two turns for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. and jockey Edgard Zayas. Golden Gate's second race, an allowance optional claimer at six furlongs for fillies and mares wraps up the Stronach 5 and the five-horse field also has a 7-5 favorite in Coco Bee, a winner last time out for trainer Blaine Wright and a winner of six of 12 career starts.

Oklahoma Commission Accepts Jackpot Bet Rule Change

The Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission (OHRC), in its January meeting, accepted an amendment to its rules of racing which will now increase protection of horseplayers placing jackpot-style bets. The action came following months of advocacy from the Thoroughbred Idea Foundation (TIF).

TIF became involved on behalf of horseplayer Jeffrey Arthur whose case was outlined in detail in a publication on April 16, 2020.

Arthur held the only ticket with the winning combination for a jackpot pick six wager on a sequence at Remington Park but was denied the payout as it was deemed a dead heat created two tickets and was not a unique wager, disqualifying him from the $35,145 jackpot.

Arthur's bet included both horses in the dead heat in a single wager entered via his ADW account, but in conversations with TIF and Arthur's attorney, Maggi Moss, Remington officials asserted the unusual outcome created two separate tickets and that they were justified in paying only two consolations totaling $8.920.80. That amount was the entirety of the net consolation pool that evening, which proved Arthur held the only ticket with all six winners.

“We are incredibly pleased with the outcome that the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission has accepted a change to its rules which will ensure all horseplayers are treated fairly and that no one will have to face the situation Mr. Arthur endured,” said Patrick Cummings, TIF's Executive Director.

“Horseplayers are the backbone of our industry. Wagering from horseplayers is directly responsible for a significant portion of prize money which is shared by thousands of owners, trainers and jockeys, and will be needed more than ever as many jurisdictions face budgetary pressures and growing threats to decouple casino revenue sharing from purse accounts.”

Pending final adoption which is expected through the Oklahoma legislature and Governor, the OHRC has now clearly defined “unique wager,” utilizing a definition which is commonplace across other American jurisdictions but which was not within the state's rules previously.

Upon full implementation, a customer whose ticket, entered at the minimum bet amount, is the only to select all winners with a “Pick N” jackpot bet, where “n” equals the number of races in the sequence, is entitled to the jackpot even if multiple winning combinations are created from the original ticket as the result of several scenarios. Those include: a late scratch being replaced by a post-time favorite, a dead-heat, or in cases where a race has been subject to a surface switch after the start of the sequence.

“TIF petitioned the Commission last summer and presented our proposal to their Rules Committee. What we thought was going to be fairly straightforward, as the definition of 'unique wager' is quite clear across many other jurisdictions, was anything but. Remington offered the OHRC Rules Committee a competing request which would have memorialized the situation which caused Mr. Arthur's original problem. The Committee saw the issue with great clarity and the impact to customers.”

“While TIF believes jackpot bets are wagers which should generally be avoided as they carry bloated daily effective takeout to the detriment of horseplayers, and greatly limit wagering churn to the detriment of horsemen, we are most pleased with the outcome and the protection this update provides horseplayers.”

The addition of “unique wager” to the rules was part of the OHRC's annual rules amendment process. Many other amendments were made as part of the review.

Aqueduct’s Empire 6 Wager To Offer Daily Mandatory Payout During Month Of February

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) today announced the Empire 6 wager will continue to offer a daily mandatory payout in the month of February at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Featuring a $0.20 bet minimum and 20 percent takeout, the Empire 6 wager requires bettors to select the first-place finisher of the final six races of the card. The full pool, minus takeout, will be distributed to bettors who select the first-place finisher in the greatest number of races on the card.

NYRA established a daily mandatory payout of the Empire 6 for all 19 race dates in the month of January at Aqueduct as part of a pilot program in response to horseplayer interest in wagers that reward the daily player with the opportunity for impressive payouts.

“The extension of this pilot program will benefit horseplayers and allow NYRA to continue to analyze the Empire 6,” said Joe Longo, General Manager of NYRA Content Management Solutions. “The wager saw significant growth in January, and we thank all those watching and wagering from home for their continued support.”

Aqueduct will offer 16 racing dates in February with live racing generally conducted Thursday through Sunday, with the addition of a special Monday card on February 15 for Presidents' Day.

The Empire 6 was launched in August 2019 with a jackpot provision in which the full pool would be paid out only to a single ticket selecting the first-place finisher in all six races, otherwise 75 percent of the day's net pool would be distributed to those who selected the first-place finisher in the greatest number of races with the remainder added into a jackpot and carried to the next day's Empire 6.
