Kentucky Downs Turf Pick of the Day for Sept. 12

Steve Sherack and Brian DiDonato give their best bet for each day of racing during the FanDuel Meet at Kentucky Downs. $100 Win/Place format; highest bankroll at the end wins.

Steve Sherack: Saturday's ResultsBombard set the pace as expected and just got nipped on the wire for second to finish third. Bankroll: $550.

Race 7 – In a race absolutely loaded with speed, Lady Danae is the clear cut one to beat, bad post and all, off an ultra-impressive, come-from-behind debut win at Saratoga over a razor-sharp, next-out winner. With all that being said, I'm going to take a swing on Cavalier Cupid at a nice price. She's drawn well on the inside, is handy enough to sit within striking distance, and really flew home impressively (:11.71 and :11.44) in her last two wins going five furlongs at Colonial. The added distance is the big question here, but her likely double-digit odds will make it worth finding out. Selection: #5 Cavalier Cupid (15-1).

Brian DiDonato: Saturday's Results Annex could only manage eighth from the back of the pack. One last chance to catch Sherack. Bankroll: $0.

Race 8 – I know I've been taking a lot of cutbacks, but I do think they have a bit of an advantage here. Toby's Heart looked like a potential monster at two, and she did win a stake this April, but has gone winless in her last three. She was a close fifth in the GIII Soaring Softly S. over a one-turn seven furlongs at Belmont that probably plays somewhat like this configuration, but the chart comments don't really accurately reflect that trip–she was left with too much to do and found traffic trouble that slowed her momentum. She split re-opposing Navratilova and New Boss two back going a mile, but those two were up on a slow pace and she came from way out of it. The 'TDN Rising Star' stuck to the mile last time in Saratoga's GIII Lake George S., and was a decent third against what was probably a tougher bunch. Winner Technical Analysis came back to take the GII Lake Placid in pretty dominant fashion. Now Toby's Heart gets a rider upgrade to scorching hot Joel Rosario, who has the perfect style for a horse like this. Selection: #6 Toby's Heart (3-1).

Kentucky Downs Turf Pick of the Day for Sept. 5

Steve Sherack and Brian DiDonato give their best bet for each day of racing during the FanDuel Meet at Kentucky Downs. $100 Win/Place format; highest bankroll at the end wins.

Steve Sherack: Race 2 – Don't think we'll see anything near the 20-1 morning-line quote, but Gamble's Orb can certainly run this field off their heels at a price in her grass debut. She flashed big speed in her first two goes in the Gulfstream slop, dueling and finishing a close second June 25, then dueling and tiring to a well-beaten third July 23. Her dam Forest Gamble (Forest Wildcat) was a razor sharp winner in her lone career start over the Woodbine synthetic, and she has produced a pair of stakes winners over that surface as well. Orb, sire of P. G. Johnson S. winner Orbolution, is certainly capable of siring a turf runner and Gamble's Orb blew out three furlongs over the Palm Meadows turf in :34 3/5 (1/4) Aug. 24. Trainer Joe Orseno shipped in from his South Florida base to capture last year's GIII Runhappy Turf Sprint S. with Imprimis. Selection: #2 Gamble's Orb (20-1).

Brian DiDonato: Race 6 – The 2-year-old maiden races are some of the most interesting and typically wide-open events at Kentucky Downs, and there were several babies who caught my eye on this opening day card. I'll make Go Bali Go my play. He ran a sneaky good race first out after getting squeezed out at the start and making a middle move behind a very slow pace. The fifth-place run when switching to the dirt can be excused–he dueled through a pace rated fast that day on a surface he probably doesn't prefer. His dam was dramatically better on grass and her other progeny have leaned that way too. Freshman sire Bal a Bali was also a turf horse, and his early runners have seemed turfy for the most part as well. I'm hoping for a bit better than the 8-1 morning line, and think Go Bali Go has a solid shot to put it all together this time around. Selection: #4 Go Bali Go (8-1).

Brisnet.com Triple Crown Throwdown: Shared Belief

Ed DeRosa of Brisnet.com takes on TDN’s Steve Sherack and Brian DiDonato as they handicap Triple Crown prep races plus the big three races themselves. The three will make $100 Win/Place bets in the preps and $200 Win/Place bets in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont. Highest bankroll at the end wins.

DeRosa – Haskell Result – Longshot Jesus’ Team was fourth. Bankroll: $4960.

Shared Belief S. – The Shared Belief could provide needed points to Cezanne and lagniappe to Honor A. P., so we’ll go with the horse who actually needs the points to compete in the GI Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve. There’s more to it than that, of course, as Cezanne has both a tactical (front-end) and weight (-6 pounds) over his chief rival in what has become a compact field. Selection: #6 Cezanne (7-2).

Sherack – Haskell Result – Not exactly how you want to see a 3-5 shot win, but Authentic just hung on for a narrow decision after having a pretty easy time of it up front. Bankroll: $3425.

Shared Belief S. – With the expected late scratches of a couple of contenders, this can turn into an oddly run race for the remaining field of four. That being said, it’s awfully hard to make a case against who I firmly believe is the best 3-year-old in the country, even at a short price. Selection: #5 Honor A. P. (8-5).

DiDonato Haskell Result – How in the world did they let Authentic get so loose? Dr Post always seemed under a ride and settled for third. I was a little surprised to see them choose the Haskell over Runhappy Travers given his grindy style, and would expect him to run a bit better at Churchill, though not sure he can beat the top few. Bankroll: $5125.

Shared Belief S. – I don’t see Honor A. P. losing this race and, given the current contest standings, there’s no real reason for me to try and get creative. Looking forward to the heavyweight match-up between him, Tiz the Law and Art Collector in Kentucky. Selection: #5 Honor A. P. (8-5).
