Curlin Colt Leapfrogs Into Lead at KEESEP

A colt by Curlin has no shortage of new owners after Gainesway’s Alex Solis signed the ticket on hip 282 at $1.2 million Monday at Keeneland. The new partnership includes Mike Repole, Vinnie Viola’s St. Elias, Gainesway, John Oxley and Robert Clay’s Grandview.
“We’ve been talking about all the colts we liked and I really liked this colt,” Solis said after signing the lengthy ticket. “I thought his mother was a pretty special filly. All week long I kept seeing him and thought I’d like to find a way to take a piece of this colt.”
The gray colt is out of multiple Grade I winner Midnight Lucky (Midnight Lute) and was co-bred by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm, Mike PEgram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman. The mare was trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, who was an interested observer while standing out back as the bidding escalated.
Pegram purchased Midnight Lucky for $220,000 at the 2011 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. She went on to win the 2013 GI Acorn S. and 2014 GI Humana Distaff S. for Pegram, Watson and Weitman. The 10-year-old mare produced a filly by Curlin this year and was bred back to Triple Crown winner Justify.
Solis did his bidding while standing in the doorway of the sales pavilion and surrounded by a crowd which included Gainesway owner Antony Beck, Clay and trainer Todd Pletcher.
“I thought he’d be somewhere around there,” Solis said of the colt’s final price. “I didn’t know where. In this market, it’s kind of who you run into.”
Asked if the purchase was made considering a future stallion career for the yearling, Solis said, “Oh yes. When you pay that much money, you’re hoping it’s multiples if they hit.”

Old Forester Colt Tops CTHS Canadian Premier Yearling Sale

A colt by Old Forester, whose Horse of the Year son Pink Lloyd goes for a fourth consecutive victory in the GIII Vigil S. at Woodbine this Saturday, fetched a final bid of C$90,000 (US$68,977) to top Wednesday’s CTHS Canadian Premier Yearling Sale at Woodbine. Pink Lloyd, winner of 25 of his 30 career starts, was a graduate of the 2013 sale.

Consigned to the sale by Bernard McCormack’s Cara Bloodstock, the chestnut–offered as hip 15–was bred in Ontario by Whitford Bloodstock and is the latest foal from the multiple stakes-placed Holidaysatthefarm (Smarty Jones). The 12-year-old mare, already the dam of three winners from as many to race, is a half-sister to dual Grade III winner Rich In Spirit (Repriced), in turn the dam of GSW & GISP Wishing Gate (Indian Charlie) and granddam of SW and ‘TDN Rising Star’ Summering (War Front). The winning ticket was signed by John Di Scola.

A pair of offerings tied for second-dearest lot on bids of C$82,000. Hip 119, a Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales-consigned daughter of Lane’s End’s Mr Speaker from the family of Queen’s Plate and Sovereign Award winner Woodcarver (Woodman) was hammered down to Jim Menzies, while hip 136, a Langfuhr full-brother to SP Sweet Crimson and close relative to SW Will She (Wando) and MSP Sweet Grass Creek (Wando) was sold to Derek Chin, also from the Hill ‘n’ Dale draft.

A filly by Noble Mission (GB), who is a half-sister to SW Always Inthe Munny (Munnings), was led out unsold on a bid of C$100,000.

CTHS reported sales on 142 horses from 197 through the ring (27.9% RNA) and turnover of C$2,795,300. The average was C$19,685 with a median price of C$14,000. In 2019, a total of 157 horses were sold for C$3,381,400, an average of C$21,358 and a median of C$13,000. The buyback rate was 35.9%.

Desert Party Sold To Saudi Arabia

Desert Party (Street Cry {Ire}–Sage Cat, by Tabasco Cat), a graded/group winner at ages two, three and four, has been sold to continue his stud career in Saudi Arabia. The deal was brokered by Chad Schumer of Chad Schumer Bloodstock.

Bred in Kentucky by David Smith and Steven Sinatra, Desert Party was purchased by Paul Pompa, Jr. for $425,000 at the 2007 Keeneland September sale, then watched as his pinhook prospect topped the Fasig-Tipton Calder Sale on John Ferguson’s bid of $2.1 million less than six months later. Winner of his first two trips to the post for Eoin Harty, including the GII Sanford S. at Saratoga, Desert Party added the G3 UAE 2000 Guineas during his sophomore season and the G3 Mahab Al Shimaal in Dubai and the Donald LeVine Memorial H. in 2010. He retired with six wins from 10 starts and earnings of $928,467.

Desert Party is the sire of seven black-type winners to date, chief among them Peruvian Group 3 winner Salama, and the multiple stakes winners Heart’s Song and Aunt Babe.

Desert Party most recently stood at Godstone Farm in Pennsylvania.

Fasig-Tipton to Consolidate Saratoga Fall, Midlantic Mixed/HORA Sales

Due to current travel restrictions in place in New York State to prevent the spread of COVID-19, officials at Fasig-Tipton have announced that the Saratoga Fall Sale, scheduled for Oct. 20, will not go forward as planned. It will instead be combined with the company’s Midlantic December Mixed and Horses of Racing Age Sale and will take place in Timonium Dec. 7 and 8.

Governor Andrew Cuomo’s New York Travel Advisory requires any individuals that travel to New York–from any of the states currently listed–to complete a mandatory 14-day quarantine upon arrival in the state. There are currently 35 states/territories listed under this travel advisory, including horse racing regions Kentucky, Florida, Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, California and Texas.

“The current travel advisory requirements make it virtually impossible for many buyers from out of state to attend an auction in Saratoga,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning.  “We do not know what the duration or scope of the New York Travel Advisory will be in October.  Combining our Saratoga Fall and Midlantic December sales into a two-day auction in Maryland is the prudent and logical course of action at this point in time.”

Entries for the main catalogue will close Sept. 18, while the deadline for the HORA supplement is Nov. 13. Entry forms are available at www.fasigtipton.com.
