Calumet Farm Tops North American Breeders By Earnings In 2020

Calumet Farm has topped the individual breeders list in North America for the second year in a row with $9,768,957 in earnings in 2020, according to statistics released today by The Jockey Club Information Systems. Calumet Farm bred 479 starters with 336 wins, 289 seconds, and 346 thirds out of 2,587 starts.

WinStar Farm, LLC was second with earnings of $9,234,344 with 149 wins out of 1,137 starts.

WinStar Farm, LLC topped the breeders list that includes partners with $11,713,732 in earnings and 254 wins from 1,851 starts. Calumet Farm came in second with $9,869,125 in earnings and 343 wins out of 2,619 starts.

Rounding out the top 10 individual breeders were Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds, LLC, $8,628,034 (51 wins / 380 starts); Godolphin, $7,032,428 (113/620); Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC, $5,911,505 (138/744); Kenneth L. Ramsey & Sarah K. Ramsey, $5,589,796 (206/1633); Brereton C. Jones, $4,933,211 (159/1,087); Gary & Mary West Stables Inc., $4,241,666 (126/762); Juddmonte Farms Inc., $4,034,079 (64/377); and Woodford Thoroughbreds, LLC, $3,601,327 (115/834).

Completing the list of the top 10 breeders including partnerships were Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds, LLC, $8,628,034 (51 wins / 380 starts); Godolphin, $8,240,296 (152/843); Kenneth L. Ramsey, $6,074,311 (220/1,705); Sarah K. Ramsey, $6,054,921 (219/1,700); Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC, $5,966,876 (139/762); Brereton C. Jones, $5,594,645 (181/1,220); Fred W. Hertrich III, $4,773,048 (134/947); and Gary & Mary West Stables Inc., $4,251,747 (127/774).

Rising Star Headed To Stakes Company

‘TDN Rising Star‘ Caddo River (Hard Spun), who broke his maiden by 9 1/2 lengths over Churchill’s one-turn mile Nov. 15, is being pointed for a sophomore debut in the $150,000 Smarty Jones S. at Oaklawn Park Jan. 22.

Bred and raced by John Ed Anthony’s Shortleaf Stable and trained by Brad Cox, the son of Pangburn (Congrats) made his first two career starts going seven furlongs on the New York circuit, finishing a debut second at Saratoga Sept. 5 before filling the same spot at Belmont Park Nov. 11. He made all the running last time, stopping the clock in a very strong 1:35.22.

Cox believes the best is yet to come.

“He’s a very good colt,” Cox told the Oaklawn notes team. “He ran against two really good colts in New York. He was able to break his maiden, one turn at Churchill. He’s big, tall, rangy, leggy colt. I really do think that he’s going to be better around two turns. He’s got what I think it takes to be a serious horse. He’s got speed and he can carry it.”

Since shipping in from Kentucky, Caddo River has logged a pair of breezes over the Oaklawn main track, including a half-mile drill that was timed in :48 flat (3/87) Jan. 3.

Chasing Moments Tops CTBA January Mixed Sale At $70,000

Chasing Moments, a daughter of Orb in foal to California stallion Stay Thirsty, sold for $70,000 to top Wednesday's California Thoroughbred Breeders Association January Mixed Sale at Fairplex Park.

Marcelo Aguera purchased the 6-year-old mare, who is a half-sister to the Grade 2 winner Authenticity, herself the dam of stakes winner Hanalei Moon.

The second-highest priced purchase was a yearling filly by Malibu Moon, out of the Bluegrass Cat mare Brush Strokes, purchased for $60,000 by Double Chevron Racing.

Aguera also made a pair of $40,000 purchases – Mobilize, a War Front mare in foal to Stay Thirsty, and Wedding Dress, a Medaglia d'Oro mare in foal to Stay Thirsty.

The 72 horses sold for a gross of $574,100, an average of $7,974 and median of $3,450.

Champion British Idiom Sold To Northern Farm In Japan

British Idiom, the champion 2-year-old female of 2019, has been sold to begin her broodmare career at Japan's Northern Farm, BloodHorse reports.

Bloodstock agent Liz Crow, an advisor for the filly's ownership group during her on-track career, told BloodHorse that the 4-year-old daughter of Flashback's sale was finalized in June, and she was exported to Japan in September. Her final start came in the Grade 3 Fantasy Stakes, which she exited with a chip in her right-front ankle.

British Idiom retired with three wins in five starts for earnings of $1,442,139.

She went unbeaten in three starts during her championship season, breaking her maiden by 3 1/2 lengths at Saratoga Race Course, then jumping up in class to take the G1 Alcibiades Stakes by a whopping 6 1/2 lengths. She secured her Eclipse Award in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita Park, catching favorite Donna Veloce to win by a neck.

Trained by Brad Cox, British Idiom raced for the partnership of Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb, and The Elkstone Group.

British Idiom was bred in Kentucky by Hargus Sexton, Sandra Sexton, and Silver Fern Farm.
