Breeders’ Cup Delaying 2021 Ticket Sales ‘Until We Have Greater Clarity’

The 2021 Breeders' Cup World Championships are scheduled for Nov. 5-6 at Del Mar in Southern California, but CEO Drew Fleming revealed on Monday that the Breeders' Cup is delaying ticket sales for the event, according to Fox 5 San Diego.

“We are working closely with Del Mar, local officials and public health experts to safely plan the 2021 World Championships,” Fleming said. “To ensure we have the most up-to-date safety protocols in place in compliance with CDC guidelines, including the permitted levels of attendance, we are delaying ticket sales for the 2021 Breeders' Cup World Championships until we have greater clarity on the ever-changing landscape. Rest assured, it is our strong intent to safely host fans at the 2021 World Championships.”

Fans were not allowed at the 2020 World Championships, hosted at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, Ky., due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

Lys Gracieux Produces First Foal

Between them, they won two Japanese Horse of the Year titles, three additional divisional awards and four major races on foreign soil. Late Sunday evening, Lys Gracieux (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) was represented by her first foal when she produced a colt by the brilliant Maurice (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}).

Trained by Yoshito Yahagi and carrying the green-and-white colours of Carrot Farm, Lys Gracieux retired to stud in 2019 after winning seven of her 22 trips to the post, four of which came at the highest level. The dark bay, now seven, defeated her peers for a maiden Group 1 in the Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup in 2018 before just failing to catch Exultant (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) in that year's G1 Longines Hong Kong Vase. She concluded her career with defeats of males in her final three appearances–the G1 Takarazuka Kinen, the G1 Cox Plate in Melbourne (see below) and a smashing five-length success over two-time Horse of the Year Almond Eye (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) and others in the G1 Arima Kinen (video). She was named Horse of the Year in 2019.

Maurice was campaigned by Kazumi Yoshida and came to hand as a 4-year-old, winning the G1 Yasuda Kinen, G1 Mile Championship and G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile in succession in 2015 to secure Horse of the Year honours. He added an additional three top-level scores in 2016, easily taking the G1 Champions' Mile back at Sha Tin in May before wrapping up his career with facile wins in the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) and G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup, both over 2000 metres.

From his first crop to the races in 2020, Maurice was the sire of 32 winners for progeny earnings of better than ¥393 million. He was second to Duramente (Jpn) in each of those categories. He is the sire of Group 3 winner Pixie Knight (Jpn) and four other black-type performers.

Maurice is also the sire of 3-year-old colt Buena Ventura (Jpn), a son of 2010 Horse of the Year Buena Vista (Jpn) (Special Week {Jpn}), and is also responsible for the 3-year-old filly Geraldina (Jpn), whose dam Gentildonna (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) was Japan's Horse of the Year in 2012 and 2014. Gentildonna is due to Maurice for 2021.

Pennsylvania Horse Racing Association Offers Live Foal Cams

The Pennsylvania Horse Racing Association (PHRA) is giving adults and kids alike an educational opportunity to watch what could be the next set of champion race horses being born through its free live foal cams.

The foal cams will go live today from Kennett Square-based Thoroughbred farm Walnut Green and Wellsville-based Standardbred operation Diamond Creek Farm, where a total of 52 expectant mares will be giving birth to either a frisky filly or charming colt from now until the end of May. The foal cams will be live until the end of April.

“As we continue to find new ways to keep ourselves entertained and learning virtually, we are thrilled to give horse racing enthusiasts and new fans the opportunity to get a glimpse into the life of these magnificent creatures, and the beauty of a foal being born, which is truly an awesome sight,” said Pete Peterson, president of the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Association. “We hope that people will tune in and learn about this exciting time we call foaling season.”

Viewers tuning into the PHRA foal cams will see the mares in their stalls as they anticipate the arrivals of their bundles of joy, day-to-day interactions between the mares and their caregivers, and — if lucky enough — the opportunity to witness the births of the next generation of Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds.

In addition to the foal cams, the PHRA website includes breeding basics, videos, interactive polls and gender reveals.

Grey Swallow, Hollywood Handsome To Stand At Willow Hill Equestrian In Virginia

Willow Hill Equestrian in Orange, Va. will add two new members to its stallion roster in 2021, in veteran Grey Swallow and newcomer Hollywood Handsome.

Grey Swallow, the winner of the 2004 Irish Derby, will stand the upcoming breeding season for an advertised fee of $3,000.

The 20-year-old son of Daylami previously stood at Calumet Farm in Kentucky. Before that, he stood in Australia and his native Ireland.

Grey Swallow has sired 10 crops of racing age, with 51 winners and combined progeny earnings of more than $2.4 million. He has Grade/Group 1-placed runners in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with Ungrateful Ellen finishing second in Australia's Group 1 Queensland Oaks and Cadet Connelly running second in Canada's Grade 1 Summer Stakes.

Grey Swallow won six of 15 starts during his own on-track career for earnings of $1,607,293.

In addition to his Irish Derby score, his 2004 campaign featured a win in the listed Two Thousand Guineas Trial Stakes and a third-place finish in the Irish Two Thousand Guineas itself. As a 2-year-old, he won the G3 Killavullan Stakes.

Grey Swallow continued to run at a high level when he reached the older horse division, including a victory in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup in Ireland. He then became a globetrotter, competing in the U.S., Canada and Australia. His biggest success came in the U.S., where he won the G2 Jim Murray Memorial Handicap and finished third in the G1 Manhattan Handicap.

Bred in Ireland by Mrs. C. L. Weld, Grey Swallow is out of the winning The Minstrel mare Style of Life, who was named Ireland's Broodmare of the Year in 2004. His siblings include Group 3 winner Moonlight Dance, and Group 3-placed Central Lobby, Stylish Ways, and Rustic.

The stallion's extended family includes Italian Group 1 winner Night Style.

Hollywood Handsome, a Grade 2-placed son of Tapizar, will debut at stud in 2021 for an advertised fee of $1,000.

The 7-year-old retired with four wins in 36 starts for earnings of $269,989. After just missing the board in a pair of Kentucky Derby prep races, Hollywood Handsome entered the the 2017 Belmont Stakes but he was pulled up after he clipped heels and the rider lost his irons.

Hollywood Handsome earned his most notable black type at age four, when he finished second in the G2 New Orelans Handicap.

Bred in Kentucky by North Hanover Bloodstock, Hollywood Handsome is out of the winning Forestry mare Ladyflickerflacker, who is the dam of two winners from three foals to race. His second dam is the Grade 2-placed stakes winner Harbor Blues, and his extended family features Grade 2 winner Night Patrol.
