Jenny Pfanenstiel Named Featured Milliner Of 2021 Kentucky Derby

Churchill Downs Racetrack today announced that Master Milliner and owner of Louisville-based Formé Millinery Jenny Pfanenstiel has been named a Featured Milliner of the 147th Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve. Pfanenstiel is renowned throughout the world for her dedication to craft and quality in her one-of-a-kind creations. Her hats and fascinators for women and men are available at the Formé Millinery Hat Shop in downtown Louisville, specialty boutiques around the world and at www.formemillinery.com.

Pfanenstiel is internationally recognized for her award-winning craft of creating and sculpting hats by hand using the highest quality and rare materials from across the globe. She incorporates traditional millinery techniques and is known for her unique practice of sculpting hats on a braid machine from the 1800s, making her a perfect fit for the oldest continually held sporting event in North America.

Indiana Grand: Handicapping Contest Winner Donates Prize Money To Backstretch Worker

Indiana Grand Racing & Casino has been hosting an online handicapping contest this winter with the weekly winner receiving a $100 gift card. The contest has been attracting players from all across the country with an average of 70 participating in the event. Last week, the top handicapper, Terry Kinsley of Ohio, donated his card to a hard-working member of the backstretch at Indiana Grand. Lorenzo Jimenez of the Michelle Elliott Stable was the recipient of the card.

Jimenez, a native of Mexico, has been in the United States working with horses since 1995. His talents were mainly seen in Florida, but a few years ago, he moved over to work the sales near Ocala, Fla. and became acquainted with Elliott. As a result, he is now spending his second year working for her operation at Indiana Grand.

“Lorenzo is very hard working and is one of those unsung heroes you hear about on the backstretch,” said Dee Thoman, security shift supervisor. “He comes up every morning and gets his temperature taken and follows all the rules. He's a pleasure to have on the backstretch.”

Kinsley asked that a backstretch worker be selected on his behalf to receive the award. Lorenzo received the $100 gift card, which was presented by Chris Polzin, director of racing/racing secretary, Tuesday, Feb. 23.

Mattress Mack: ‘Threats Of Fraud Are Real, Whether The Fraud Is Real Or Not’

Asked what he would like to change about the horse racing industry, Thoroughbred owner James “Mattress Mack” McIngvale told Thoroughbred Racing Commentary that he'd like to see a sport with zero tolerance for performance-enhancing drugs.

“Threats of fraud are real, whether the fraud is real or not, just like this last presidential election,” McIngvale told TRC. “Half the population doesn't believe in the results. So, horse racing can't be in that same boat. Cannot go there. It's no fun when you've got no shot from the get-go.”

McIngvale pointed to the newly-signed federal Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act as a step in the right direction.

“[HISA], it's very good, just has to be enforced,” he said. “People need to run these horses on hay, oats and water, just like we ran Runhappy. It makes the horses happier. It makes the betting more transparent. And the fans don't think they're an outsider looking in.”

Southwest Stakes: Spielberg In, Keepmeinmind To Wait For Rebel

Southern California-based Spielberg will join the lineup for this Saturday's delayed edition of the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park, reports the Daily Racing Form, while locally-based Keepmeinmind will wait two weeks for the G2 Rebel Stakes.

The Southwest, originally scheduled for Feb. 15, was delayed two weeks by a series of winter storms that hit that Hot Springs, Ark. track, but will still offer the winner 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Spielberg, a 3-year-old son of Union Rags trained by Bob Baffert, won the G2 Los Alamitos Futurity in 2020, but failed to fire when fourth last out in the G3 Bob Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita.

The colt worked six furlongs in 1:13.00 at Santa Anita on Sunday. He'll be piloted in the Southwest by Martin Garcia

“We're going,” Baffert told drf.com. “We'll see what he does over there. He's been training well.”

The Southwest is also expected to draw champion Essential Quality and Grade 1 winner Jackie's Warrior. Entries will be taken Tuesday afternoon.

Keepmeinmind, the Grade 2-winning son of Laoban trained by Robertino Diodoro, missed 11 days of training due to the condition in Arkansas, hence the decision to delay his 2021 debut until the Rebel Stakes on March 13.
