Bears Watching, Half Bro to Code of Honor, Gallops at Gulfstream

7th-Gulfstream, $45,000, Msw, 3-13, 3yo, 7f, 1:22.95, ft, 7 3/4 lengths.
BEARS WATCHING (c, 3, Karakontie {Jpn}–Reunited {GSW, $326,771}, by Dixie Union) continued to live up to his moniker, building on a strong debut third–two spots ahead of subsequent 'TDN Rising Star' Collaborate (Into Mischief)–in the local slop Feb. 6 to dismantle an overmatched group of Gulfstream maidens Saturday afternoon. Speedy enough to argue the pace through the early exchanges, the 3-5 pick was eased back out of a potentially tight spot to stalk the pacesetters while racing on his lonesome in fourth. Going nicely on the turn and in need only of somewhere to run, Bears Watching was tipped out into the four path at the quarter pole and ran up the score from there, scoring by 7 3/4 lengths over Gran Runner (Runhappy) in racehorse time. Bears Watching is a half-brother to these connections' Code of Honor (Noble Mission {GB}), MGISW, $2,731,320, who won the 2019 GII Fountain of Youth S. over the Gulfstream main track before going on to add the GI Runhappy Travers S. and GI Jockey Club Gold Cup later that season; and Big League (Speightstown), GSP, $318,806. Reunited's most recent produce is a Honor Code colt of 2019.  Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-1, $30,600. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.

Oaks Winner Returns Running in Azeri

Easing out to start the 9-5 second favorite while making her 4-year-old debut in Saturday's GII Azeri S. at Oaklawn Park, last year's GI Kentucky Oaks victress SHEDARESTHEDEVIL (f, 4, Daredevil–Starship Warpspeed, by Congrats) was allowed a reasonably easy time of it on the engine and held on late to narrowly defeat 3-2 chalk Letruska (Super Saver) by a short neck. Alertly away from the widest stall in the field of five, Shedaresthedevil was allowed to dictate terms, as Envoutante (Uncle Mo) did the pressing to her outside while Letruska was settled three wide for Joel Rosario. She covered the opening half-mile in a controlled :47.79, but had a hard-ridden Envoutante and Letruska stacked to her outside with every chance if good enough turning for home. Envoutante was the first to yield, but Letruska–taken out of her best game–kept plugging away and Shedaresthedevil managed to scrape home narrowly first.

Judge Approves Motion Filed By Jason Servis’ Attorney To Extend Timeline In Federal Doping Case

The judge presiding over the federal case against 14 alleged horse dopers approved a motion to extend the timeline by one month this Friday, reports the Thoroughbred Daily News, pushing the start of the trial back until after Labor Day. Filed by the attorney for Jason Servis, Rita Glavin, and supported by attorneys for the other 13 defendants, the motion was filed to give the defense more time to sift through the large amount of evidence in the case.

“Given the volume of discovery that we are still reviewing, I respectfully request that the Phase Two Motions schedule be modified as follows: defense motions due June 28, government response due July 28, and defense replies due on Aug. 11,” Glavin wrote.

Currently, the court case is the first round of hearing “dispositive motions” filed by the defense in an effort to have some of the charges dropped. The second round of motions, which is what was extended Friday, deal with requests to suppress evidence and/or expert testimony. A status hearing is scheduled for May 14.

On Mar. 9, one year to date from the first arrests in the case, Scott Robinson was sentenced to 18 months in prison. U.S. District Judge J. Paul Oetken handed down the sentence on Tuesday after Robinson pleaded guilty to one count of drug adulteration and misbranding conspiracy in September 2020.
