Drumette, Dam Of Monomoy Girl, Named 2020 Kentucky Broodmare Of The Year

Drumette, the dam of two-time champion Monomoy Girl, was named 2020 Broodmare of the Year on Wednesday at the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders and Kentucky Thoroughbred Association's Kentucky-Bred Champions awards presentation.

The 13-year-old Henny Hughes mare is the dam of six winners from as many foals to race, highlighted by Monomoy Girl, a daughter of Tapizar who was named champion 3-year-old filly of 2018 and champion older female of 2020.

Monomoy Girl went unbeaten during her 2020 campaign, notching an optional claiming win at Churchill Downs to kick off the season, then rolling off victories in the G2 Ruffian Stakes and G1 La Troienne Stakes, before finishing the season with a clear score in the Breeders' Cup Distaff at Keeneland. She was named champion Kentucky-bred older female at Wednesday's awards, as well.

Drumette's produce record was also bolstered in 2020 by Mr. Monomoy, a colt by Palace Malice who won the G2 Risen Star Stakes and finished third in the G3 Lecomte Stakes. Mr. Monomoy debuted at stud this year, standing at Waldorf Farm in New York.

Other runners contributing to Drumette's record in 2020 included Cowboy Diplomacy (by Tapizar) and Superman Shaq (by Shackleford).

Drumette has a 2-year-old filly from the first crop of Mastert, a yearling colt by Tapit, and she was booked back to Tapit for 2021.

Drumette's four winners in 2020 were bred by the partnership of Frankfort Park Farm and Highfield Ranch. The mare was purchased by Highfield Ranch for $75,000 at the 2014 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, with Monomoy Girl in utero. She sold to Bridlewood Farm at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton November Sale for $1.85 million.

Wednesday's Kentucky-bred awards also recognized Authentic as its 2020 Horse of the Year, adding to the accolades the colt picked up as the Eclipse Award winner for the same honor.

The 4-year-old son of Into Mischief won five of seven starts during his 2020 campaign, highlighted by victories in the Breeders' Cup Classic and Kentucky Derby, as well as the G1 Haskell Stakes, G2 San Felipe Stakes, and G3 Sham Stakes. He also finished a narrow second in the Preakness Stakes.

Nine Races Carded For April 13 Opening Day At Indiana Grand

Nine races will kick off the 19th season of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing Tuesday, April 13. The program features eight Thoroughbred and one Quarter Horse race with a first post time of 2:25 p.m.

Featured on the card is a $37,000 Indiana sired allowance in the sixth race. The eight-horse field brings the return of several Indiana winners from last season, including Sudden Shift from the Bob Gorham Stable. The three-year-old Unbridled Express gelding finished second in his final start of 2020 in the $75,000 Indiana Futurity. DeShawn Parker, 2020 leading rider at Indiana Grand, will guide Sudden Shift from post seven.

Parker earned his first leading jockey title at Indiana Grand in 2020 with 106 trips to the winner's circle. The jockey with more than 5,800 career wins adds the title from Indiana Grand to his impressive resume with numerous leading jockey titles from Mountaineer Park. Joining Parker in the race for leading jockey in 2021 is Marcelino Pedroza, Jr., who won his second leading jockey title at Indiana Grand in 2019. Pedroza was sidelined for most of the 2020 season due to injury.

In the trainer category, Genaro Garcia returns seeking his fifth straight title. He topped the standings last year with 43 wins over the shortened 96-day racing season. His stable, Southwest Racing, teamed up with Steve Lewis last year to also win leading owner honors.

The 120-day racing season extends through Monday, Nov. 8, 2021. The stakes schedule has been expanded to include several new stakes, bringing the total count to 40 with purses exceeding $3.6 million. Highlighting the stakes season is the Grade 3 $300,000 Indiana Derby and the Grade 3 $200,000 Indiana Oaks set for Wednesday, July 7. Also featured is the state's richest turf race, the $150,000 Caesars Stakes (Listed) set for Wednesday, Sept. 8.

Live racing is conducted Monday through Wednesday at 2:25 p.m. with first post on Thursday set at 3:25 p.m. Six all-Quarter Horse days have been set beginning with the first one Saturday, June 5 at 10 a.m. More information about the 2021 racing season is available at www.indianagrand.com.

Help Wanted: Omaha Exposition And Racing Seeking CEO

Omaha Exposition and Racing is seeking a new CEO. Explore a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help the Nebraska horse racing industry usher in the casino era. Omaha Exposition and Racing manages two racetracks owned by the Nebraska HBPA. Work for a board of directors committed to increasing live days and purses rather than shareholders' equity and dividends.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years' management experience in the racing industry, excellent customer service skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and a desire to provide an entertaining product that will attract a new generation of race fans. Prefer a graduate of the University of Louisville Equine Program or University of Arizona Racetrack Industry Program and/or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

A qualified applicant can expect to be reimbursed commensurate with their experience and abilities, as well as a generous bonus structured on growth of both racing and casino operations.

The position will report to the president of the board.

Duties:

-Responsible for creating, training and maintaining a staff dedicated to ensuring successful live race meets, generating the best possible experience for our live, simulcast, and casino guests; and increasing live, export and import handle.

-Ensure track maintenance team provides and maintains a safe racing surface for our human and equine athletes as well as a clean and safe stable area.

-Work with Racing and Gaming Commission to ensure all licensure is properly maintained and that all necessary submissions occur in order to conduct live and simulcast racing operations.

-Work with racing secretary to develop and enforce stabling and racing policies that encourage and promote stables of all sizes and provide a condition book consistent with the caliber of horses on the backside.

-Ensure all employees foster a good working environment with each other and our casino partner.

-Work with state vet and stable vets to ensure all horses entered to race or preparing to work are sound and healthy.

-Work with promotions team to attract sponsorships for stakes, overnight races and backside (turn-out) awards.

-Work with HBPA and financial staff to determine purse budget and structure, stakes schedule.

-Assist in recruitment of horses and racing personnel.

-Work with Nebraska Breeders' Board to keep them informed of Breed Stakes Races, Stallion Awards, A&B Breeders' Awards and purse supplements to be distributed at OER meets.

-Any other duties as assigned.

Jennifer Hoyt Promoted To Director Of Racing At Oaklawn Park

Jennifer Hoyt, who has served as Media Relations Manager for the last 10 years, has been promoted to Director of Racing. In this new role, she will work closely with Vice President of Racing Jason Milligan and will be primarily responsible for the promotion, planning and success of Oaklawn's live racing product.

“Jennifer's passion for horse racing is second to none,” Milligan said. “She has numerous contacts with horsemen and owners within the industry and I am excited for her and the future of Oaklawn.”

“I couldn't have written up a more perfect role for myself,” Hoyt said. “This really is my dream job. I'm excited to be even more involved with the racing program, while also continuing to promote Oaklawn's races to fans across the country.”

Hoyt has nearly 25 years of experience working in the Thoroughbred industry. In addition to working at Oaklawn, she has held positions at Churchill Downs, Turfway Park, Gulfstream Park, Arlington Park, and Lone Star Park. She is a longtime member of the Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup notes teams and has twice been part of the Dubai World Cup notes team. Hoyt is an avid supporter of Thoroughbred Aftercare and has been working closely with the Arkansas H.B.P.A. on a new program in 2021, which she hopes to grow in her new role.

Hoyt will continue to oversee Media Relations efforts during the live meets.
