JACK Thistledown Boosts Purses 10 Percent For Meet Beginning April 26

The excitement of live Thoroughbred racing returns to JACK Thistledown Racino Monday, April 26, opening a 100-day meet that extends through Oct. 14.

JACK Thistledown will card eight races Monday through Thursday with post time at 12:50 p.m. The season will also feature special Saturday race day cards, beginning with live racing on Saturday, May 1 ahead of the famed Kentucky Derby. In addition to the exciting racing action, this year's races will offer a 10 percent increase in the track's purses in hopes of attracting top class competition.

“We are excited to get back to our full slate of racing,” said Director of Racing Patrick Ellsworth. “We worked closely with the Ohio State Racing Commission and the Horsemen's group last season to establish safe protocols that allowed us to race a shortened season. I'm very proud of our trainers, jockeys, and barn area personnel, along with our team here at JACK Thistledown, for doing their part to keep the show going. Now it's time to look ahead to the 2021 season.”

The centerpiece of the meet is the 87th running of the Grade 3 $500,000 Ohio Derby on June 26. The Ohio Derby has the distinction of being the only graded stakes race in the State of Ohio. Coming off the success of last year's participation in the Road to the Kentucky Derby as well as seeing its largest filed since 1999, this year's derby day will feature a total of $1 million in purse money.

Ohio Derby Day will also feature the return of the Lady Jacqueline Stakes, an open race for fillies and mares that boasts a purse of $250,000 and expects to attract the top older fillies & mares in the Country.

“With the return of the Lady Jacqueline, the success of Last year's Ohio Derby and the increase in purses this year, we fully anticipate a banner year for racing at Jack Thistledown Racino,” said Hugh Alan Drexler, racing secretary for JACK Thistledown Racino.

Doors open to the racing floor and track apron at 11:30 a.m. Admission to the races and parking are free. Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult. The minimum age for wagering on horse races in Ohio is 18.

Esplanande Named Ohio’s 2020 Horse Of The Year

Esplanande, who bested all challengers in her home state, and made an impact on the national stage was named 2020 Ohio Horse of the Year by the Ohio Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners.

The Daredevil filly won three of four starts last year, winning on debut by 6 1/4 lengths at Belterra Park, then taking the Hoover Stakes at the same track with a front-running trip. Esplanande then shipped north to Thistledown for the Best of Ohio Cleveland Kindergarten Stakes, where she once again led at every point of call to win by 4 1/4 lengths.

The filly then tested deeper waters, shipping to Saratoga for the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes in her final start of the season. She led through the early fractions, but ultimately finished second to future Eclipse Award winner Vequist.

Esplanande is owned by the partnership of Winstar Farm LLC, Blazing Meadows Farm LLC, and Michael Lewis. She was also bred by WinStar and Blazing Meadows, and she is trained by Tim Hamm.

The filly's ownership group was also named Ohio Owners of the Year, and Esplanande took home additional honors as Ohio's champion 2-year-old filly. Southern Silence, the dam of Esplanande was also named Ohio's Broodmare of the Year.

This year's winners were selected by a committee composed of Lawrence “Bill” Couch, Ed Vomacka, and Hugh Drexler – the racing secretaries at each Ohio Thoroughbred track – and Bob “Railbird” Roberts, the award-winning former turf writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Pioneerof The Nile Colt Fastest At Day Four Of OBS Spring Sale’s Under Tack Show

As horses battled a stiff headwind that increased throughout the day, Hip No. 786, a son of Pioneerof the Nile consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, breezed a quarter in :20 4/5 to post the fastest work at the distance at the fourth session of the under tack show for Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2021 Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.

The dark bay or brown colt is out of Fancy Day (IRE), by Shamardal, a daughter of graded stakes winner Tizdubai, a full sister to champion Tiznow.

Hip No. 641, a bay colt by Violence consigned by King's Equine, Agent for Aaron and Marie Jones LLC, worked the day's fastest eighth, clocked in :9 4/5. He's out of C'Mon Sister, by Successful Appeal, a half sister to Grade 1-winning millionaire Iotapa.

Hip No. 809, a dark bay or brown colt by Neolithic consigned by Hoppel's Horse & Cattle Co., Inc., Agent, turned in a quarter in :21 flat. He's out of Fondant, by Candy Ride (ARG), a daughter of stakes winner Fond.

American Pharoah’s Maven Wires Keeneland Allowance

MAVEN (g, 4, American Pharoah–Richies Party Girl {MSW, $357,085}, by Any Given Saturday) became the first North American winner for his sire on debut over the Aqueduct main track just shy of two years ago and was the last of 22 lots to go through the ring for the boutique Goffs London Sale, but was retained by owner Richard Ravin on a bid of £725,000 (about $912,000) that would otherwise have topped the event. The chestnut rewarded that confidence with a victory in the G3 Prix du Bois at Chantilly, but he was only 10th in the G3 Molecomb S. the next month and was returned stateside. The front-running winner of a course-and-distance allowance first off a 342-day absence last July, Maven was a disappointing sixth in Saratoga's Mahony S. Aug. 27 and was 11th of 12 in the GIII Franklin Stamps S. at Kentucky Downs Sept. 16 before going missing. Returning here as a first-time gelding, Maven shot out of the stalls beneath John Velazquez while chased by 'TDN Rising Star' Boldor (Munnings). Maven looked vulnerable passing the eighth pole, but he finally switched his leads and he kept on well thereafter to secure a 2 1/4-length success as the 5-2 favorite.
