Remington Park Moves Springboard Mile To Dec. 17 Card

The $400,000 Springboard Mile, the top 2-year-old stakes event of the 2021 Remington Park Thoroughbred Season, will now be contested on Friday, Dec. 17. The evening will also serve as the final race date of the season.

This marks the second consecutive year the Springboard Mile, and its supporting undercard of stakes races, will be contested on a Friday evening. The first race for the Dec. 17 card will take place at 5pm. The Springboard program was initially set for Sunday, Dec. 19.

The Springboard has served as a solid final 2-year-old stakes on the calendar in recent years for many who have competed in the 3-year-old classics the next spring. Long Range Toddy, Combatant, Suddenbreakingnews and Will Take Charge all utilized the Springboard Mile prior to their starts in the Kentucky Derby. Will Take Charge, the Eclipse Champion 3-year-old in 2013, ran in all three Triple Crown races before winning the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga, the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby at Parx and the Grade 1 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs. Prior to his Clark victory, he was second to Mucho Macho Man, beaten only a nose, in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita.

In addition to the Springboard Mile, these stakes races are also featured for the evening of racing on Dec. 17:

$100,000 Trapeze Stakes, 2-year-old fillies, one mile
$100,000 She's All In Stakes, fillies & mares, 3 and older, 1 mile-70 yards
$70,000 Jim Thorpe Stakes, 3-year-olds, one mile (Oklahoma-breds)
$70,000 Useeit Stakes, 3-year-old fillies, one mile (Oklahoma-breds)

The $100,000 Jeffrey A. Hawk Memorial, originally scheduled as part of the undercard of Springboard Mile night, has been moved to Friday, Nov. 19.

Remington Park was first scheduled to race on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 18 & 19, but those dates have been moved to Wednesday, Sept. 29 and Thursday, Nov. 11. The season will still total 67 racing dates.

Post times have also been set for other major programs this season at Remington Park. Oklahoma Derby Day on Sunday, Sept. 26 will begin at 3pm. The live racing on Breeders' Cup Saturday, simulcast from Del Mar on Nov. 6, will start at 7:07pm. Race cards set for a Monday or Tuesday will begin at 2:30pm. All times are Central.

Entries for the Opening Night of the season, Aug. 20, will be assembled this Friday morning, Aug. 13.

Renovated Laurel Dirt Surface Reopens For Training Tuesday Morning

The four-month reconstruction of Laurel Park's dirt surface, which included the replacement of the cushion, base and substructure, officially ended Tuesday morning on schedule when horses once again began training over the track.

The multi-million-dollar track renovation by the Maryland Jockey Club included the installation of an entirely new cushion on top of a newly laid base with subsurface drainage improvements. The main dirt track was closed on April 11th after necessary remediation was identified as part of ongoing maintenance.

Dennis Moore, Senior Track Superintendent, 1/ST RACING said, “Using the opportunity of the temporary pause on racing this spring to invest in a complete main track rehabilitation has resulted in a superior racing and training surface at Laurel Park which will serve in the best interests of year-round racing in Maryland for many years to come.”

Trainer Jose Corrales, who galloped approximately 15 horses on the track Tuesday, said: “The feedback for the whole morning from what I hear, because I listen to everybody from different stables because I stay by the gap, and the feedback was [the track] was very good, very even. I didn't hear one negative thing today. You would expect it could happen, but there was not one negative thing from anybody or any of my riders. They did a very good job, and it looks very even, even though yesterday it rained like crazy here.”

Trainer Anthony 'TJ' Aguirre Jr., who gallops his horses, said, “I was really happy the way they were skipping over the track, switching leads. No stumbling problems or loose footing problems. And I thought it was really good for as much rain as we got. I thought it had a good amount of cushion.”

Matt McCarron, who gallops for Rodney Jenkins, said, “I give them a thumbs up. What I found most striking was the consistency. That was the biggest difference I saw. It was consistent throughout.”

While the main track at Laurel Park was closed, the Maryland Jockey Club also enhanced the turf course irrigation infrastructure for more consistent water application and improved the turf drainage with an aggressive deep-tine aeration program. Both initiatives are ongoing investments to enhance the long-term consistency of the turf.

Laurel Park's fall meet, with a $3.525 million stakes schedule, featuring the Jim McKay Maryland Million, begins September 9th.

Larry Collmus, TVG, HRRN To Anchor On-Site Coverage Of Friday’s Charles Town Classic

With new food, beverage and entertainment options available to those making it to Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races on Friday, Aug. 27, those unable to make it out to the track's largest racing event will still be able to enjoy the action whether at home, in the car or watching through one of Charles Town's many simulcast partners.

For those at home, the Charles Town Classic card will once again be broadcast live on the TVG Network, with the added bonus of TVG providing feet on the ground coverage with analyst Caton Bredar reporting from West Virginia. Bredar, who has worked behind the scenes and in front of the camera for ABC, ESPN, CBS and FOX amongst others marks the first on-site appearance by TVG since the 2012 edition of the Charles Town Classic.

The Horse Racing Radio Network, a winner of multiple Eclipse Awards and a Sovereign Award for its multimedia coverage of racing events will be broadcasting the Charles Town Classic for the tenth consecutive year. HRRN's on-site coverage will be anchored by Mike Penna and announcer Bobby Neuman with the show available to listeners on Sirius channel 216 and XM 201 as well as streaming through the Horse Racing Radio Network website.

Additionally, a familiar face – and voice – to racing fans will be seen on the track's simulcast feed with NBC's voice of the Triple Crown and Breeders' Cup, Larry Collmus handing paddock host duties for stakes races on the latter portion of the card. Collmus, who famously called American Pharoah's 2015 Triple Crown triumph and Justify's sweep of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes just three years later, served as the track's guest announcer for the Charles Town Classic from 2012 through 2014.

The first race on Charles Town Classic day is slated for 5:00 P.M EST, with the $800,000 Charles Town Classic carrying a tentative post time of 10:18 P.M.

Uncle Mo Colt Leads Opening Session Of Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale

The Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale returned on Monday after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic without missing a beat, with opening session returns comparable to what they were in 2019.

A total of 70 yearlings changed hands during Monday's kickoff day of the boutique auction, grossing $25,280,000. The 2019 sale saw 61 horses bring $22,775,000 during the opening session.

Monday's average sale price was $361,143, while the median price was $300,000. Both were down slightly from 2019. The buyback rate finished at 27 percent on Monday, compared with 28 percent during the opening day of trade two years ago.

Robert and Lawana Low purchased the session-topper, Hip 73, an Uncle Mo colt out of the Grade 1-winning Bernardini mare Dame Dorothy, for $1.6 million.

Bred in Kentucky by celebrity chef Bobby Flay, the bay colt is a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Spice is Nice.

His extended family includes French Group 1 winner Mrs. Lindsay and Grade 1 winner Unaccounted For.

Just missing the seven-figure mark was Hip 61, a Tapit filly who sold to West Point Thoroughbreds, Scarlet Oak Racing, and NBS Stable for $990,000.

The bay filly is out of the stakes-placed Dixie Union mare Checkupfromzneckup, whose first foal to race is unbeaten in three career starts. Broodmare of the Year Weekend Surprise is in her extended family, putting the filly in the same family as Horse of the Year A.P. Indy, European champion Duke of Marmalade, and a host of Grade 1 winners including Summer Squall and Court Vision.

Denali Stud consigned the filly, as agent.
