European Champion, Breeders’ Cup Classic Runner Up Sakhee Euthanized At 24

Shadwell legend Sakhee, crowned Europe's champion older horse in 2001, was put down on Friday due to the infirmities of old age. He was 24.

Sakhee was bred by the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and was the best performer sired by Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner Bahri. He was one of eight winners out of the Sadler's Wells mare Thawakib, whose biggest success came in the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot.

After being born and raised at Sheikh Hamdan's Shadwell Farm in Kentucky, it was only fitting that Sakhee was sent to Arundel to be trained by John Dunlop, as he had overseen the careers of both Bahri and Thawakib.

Sakhee scored in two of his three starts at two, but it was during his classic season at three that he really began to thrive.

Victories in the G3 Classic Trial at Sandown and G2 Dante Stakes at York were followed by an agonizing second-place finish in the Derby, in which he was headed in the final 150 yards by Sinndar.

Sakhee was transferred to the yard of Saeed bin Suroor to carry the colors of Godolphin at four. He developed into Europe's leading middle-distance horse with a pair of top-flight wins in the Juddmonte International, in which he beat Grandera by seven lengths, and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, in which he blitzed his rivals who included Aquarelliste, Golan and Milan. His margin of success at Paris was an impressive six lengths.

He concluded his 3-year-old campaign at Belmont Park in the Breeders' Cup Classic and after a ding-dong battle with Tiznow in the home stretch, he was denied by just a nose to finish second.

Sakhee made a winning reappearance at Nad Al Sheba at five before finishing third to Street Cry in the Dubai World Cup. He ended his career that season having amassed total prize-money of £2,207,096.

Sakhee was retired to Nunnery Stud for the 2003 breeding season.

Although he did not replicate his brilliance on the racecourse in the breeding shed, he still sired several leading lights headed by Sakhee's Secret, whose biggest triumph came in the G1 July Cup, in which he beat Dutch Art by half a length under a power-packed ride from Steve Drowne.

He was also responsible for Luca Cumani's globetrotting Group 1 winner Presvis, whose career yielded more than £4 million in prize-money, and the Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero Tin Horse.

Sakhee had been living out a happy retirement at Nunnery Stud since his retirement from breeding at the end of 2016. He will be much missed by everyone in the Shadwell operation.

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for Sunday running at Kokura, Niigata and Sapporo Racecourses. The February foal's third dam Emmaus (Silver Deputy) produced Wise Dan's sire Wiseman's Ferry (Hennessy) and was a half-sister to GSWs Della Francesca (Danzig), Country Cat (Storm Cat) and Bernstein (Storm Cat). HANA KIRI (c, 2, Tapit–Tamarack Bay, by Dehere) was snapped up for $325K by trainer Hideyuki Mori on behalf of owner Tsuyoshi Ono at KEESEP last fall and looks to become the eighth winner from nine to race from his GSP dam. Of the seven previous winners, four have earned full black-type, including GISW Tamarando (Bertrando), GSW turf marathoner Ward 'N Jerry (Lucky Pulpit)–third in a Del Mar optional claimer Thursday–MSW Luckarack (Lucky Pulpit) and SW U'narack (Unusual Heat). To date, the all-conquering Tapit is the sire of 37 winners from 41 starters in Japan. Mirco Demuro sees fit to ride. B-Mr & Mrs Larry D Williams (KY)

5th-KOK, ¥13,400,000 ($122k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200mT
JEAN GROS (c, 2, More Than Ready–Goodbye Stranger, by Broad Brush) was acquired by John Mayer's Nursery Place for $120K carrying this full-brother to MGSW & GISP Tom's Ready at Keeneland January in 2019 and led the colt out unsold on a bid of $130K at KEESEP in 2020. Pike Racing consigned the early March foal to this year's OBSMAR sale, where he was knocked down to the aforementioned Mori for $265K after breezing in :10 flat. Jean Gros is out of a half to the MSW dam of Deep Opus (Exchange Rate), a four-time winner of better than $600K in Japan. B-Nursery Place & Partners (KY)

LA LA CHANDON (c, 3, Street Sense–Divine Praises, by Medaglia d'Oro) cost $260K at KEESEP in 2019 and is out of a full-sister to MGSW & GISP Valid and a half to GISW Malibu Prayer (Malibu Moon). The colt's third dam Lyrical Prayer (The Minstrel) produced future GISW Swagger Jack (Smart Strike) when she was 18 years of age, a decade after foaling GSW Tap Dance (Pleasant Tap). TVG Features Extended Broadcast Of Saturday’s Pacific Classic

With a purse recently increased back to $1 million, the TVG Pacific Classic (G1) headlines a eleven-race card on Saturday at Del Mar featuring five graded stakes races with year-end championship implications. Graded stakes winner Express Train will take on eight rivals as he tries to earn a spot in the starting gate in the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) which will be held at Del Mar on November 6.

TVG will feature an expanded broadcast of the marquee race for older horses this Saturday at Del Mar with exclusive interviews, behind-the-scenes features and expert analysis. TVG's Todd Schrupp, Christina Blacker, Britney Eurton, Simon Bray, Scott Hazelton, Mike Joyce and Joaquin Jaime will be live throughout the card with insights and handicapping selections. Jockey Mike Smith will join Christina Blacker and Simon Bray on set before the fifth race to discuss his Pacific Classic entrant, Royal Ship, as well as reflect on his past success in the race.

Express Train, the morning line favorite at odds of 3-1 for trainer John Shirreffs, will be ridden by Juan Hernandez. The 4-year-old son of Union Rags won the San Diego Handicap (G2) at Del Mar in July. His rivals include Royal Ship (BRZ) and Tizamagician for trainer Richard Mandella as well as East Coast invader Dr. Post from the Todd Pletcher barn.

The undercard will also include the $300,000 Del Mar Handicap(G2), a Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” qualifying race for the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1). The race has drawn a competitive field of eleven including United, a homebred for LNJ Foxwoods and the runner-up in this race in 2020. Trained by Richard Mandella, the 6-year-old gelding will be ridden by Flavien Prat.

The award-winning network will also air several special features throughout the day including an interview with trainer Richard Mandella who will saddle Tizamagician and Royal Ship as he attempts to win his fifth edition of the Pacific Classic. His son, Gary, will conduct the interview. Other features include a spotlight on jockey Juan Hernandez, rider of Express Train as well as a look at Del Mar Mile contender Mo Forza.

There will also be the utilization of the expanded technology TVG has introduced to the Del Mar meet this season including drone footage, in-race Jockey Cams and Touchscreen Technology.

Thoroughbred Aftercare will also take center stage this weekend as the annual CARMAthon online fundraiser culminates on TVG Pacific Classic Day. TVG will be amplifying the message and will be showcasing stories of retired racehorses thriving in second careers. The donations from this fundraiser will help fund CARMA's (California Retirement Management Account) grant program which offers assistance to more than 20 Thoroughbred aftercare charities.

In addition to racing from Del Mar, TVG will also be featuring Monmouth Park, Gulfstream Park, Pimlico and more. Fans can tune in on TVG, TVG2 and the Watch TVG app which is available on Amazon Fire, Roku and connected Apple TV devices.

Supplemental Entries Added To Texas Summer Sale

The 2021 Texas Summer Yearling and Horses of Racing Age Sale will feature five supplemental hips, all added to the body of the catalog and available online in the interactive catalog at www.TTAsales.com.

The Texas Thoroughbred Association will provide a supplement paper copy of these hips available at the sales pavilion before and during the sale. Additionally, the hips will automatically be updated and added into the Equineline catalog iPad app.

The supplement hips are:

I am looking forward to getting the horses on the grounds at Lone Star Park and our sale on Aug. 30.”

The supplement paper catalog will be available at and around the sale pavilion at Lone Star Park. The horses in the supplement are already added into the interactive online catalog available at www.TTAsales.com. Online bidding will be available for the sale, and the deadline to register for online bidding is Monday, Aug. 23.

The sale will be held at Lone Star Park on Aug. 30 at 10 a.m. CT and will be livestreamed on the sale website.
