Bella Sofia Takes On Elders in Gallant Bloom

The once-defeated 3-year-old filly Bella Sofia (Awesome Patriot) looms a short-priced favorite facing four older females in Sunday's GII Gallant Bloom H. at Belmont Park.

A smashing 11 1/4-length winner of a local six-furlong maiden May 6, the $20,000 OBS June graduate yielded late to be second to then-unbeaten Australasia (Sky Kingdom) in the June 6 Jersey Girl S. The dark bay returned to winning ways, scoring by 6 1/2 length in a first-level allowance over this surface July 11 and came from just off a moderate tempo to dust her peers by 4 1/4 lengths in the GI Longines Test S. at Saratoga Aug. 7.

“The Test was a huge, huge win for us, because we don't have these kinds of horses in the barn,” said trainer Rudy Rodriguez. “To win a Grade I at Saratoga, especially a prestigious race like the Test, everything was amazing. We're still dreaming.”

The progressive Lake Avenue (Tapit) hopes to end an unlucky streak of seconditis while giving her younger rival two pounds Sunday afternoon. The 2019 GII Demoiselle S. heroine, the daughter of dual Grade I winner Seventh Street (Street Cry {Ire}) took out the one-mile Heavenly Prize Invitational S. earlier this year, but has rounded out the exacta in the GIII Bed O'Roses S., the GII Honorable Miss S. and the GI Ballerina H. in her three most recent starts.

Don't Call Me Mary (El Padrino) handed Chub Wagon (Hey Chub) her first career defeat in the Dr. Teresa Garofalo Memorial S. at Parx Aug. 23, a performance that looks a bit better within the context of Chub Wagon's bounce-back victory in Saturday's Roamin Rachel S. on the Pennsylvania Derby undercard in suburban Philly.

Hot Rod Charlie Outbattles Midnight Bourbon in PA Derby

Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow), among the most talented horses in training yet to have officially reached the highest level, got his Grade I in Saturday's Pennsylvania Derby–but not without some more drama. He had last been seen getting DQ'd from first to seventh in the GI Haskell Invitational S. at Monmouth July 17 when he crossed over on and clipped heels with Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow), causing that runner to drop Paco Lopez. And it was Midnight Bourbon who again was involved in a controversial stretch drive with Hot Rod Charlie.

Backed at 9-10 to atone for his Haskell transgressions, Hot Rod Charlie went right to the front with Midnight Bourbon locked on to his right flank through opening splits of :23.52 and :47.07. Hot Rod Charlie and Flavien Prat floated Midnight Bourbon very wide into the lane after six furlongs in 1:10.76, but they straightened up for the stretch drive and always seemed to be going better, crossing the wire 2 1/4 lengths to the good of Midnight Bourbon with Americanrevolution (Constitution) a non-threatening third.

The tote board flashed, and the tension mounted, but after some consideration the stewards made what appeared to most to be the right call and let the result stand.

“He broke well and we got ourselves to the lead,” said Prat. “He likes to be forwardly placed. When it was time to go, he kind of looked around… He kind of messed around and swapped leads. I am really happy for the whole team and the connections. I thought I was on the best horse. He was training absolutely perfect going into the race. I was under control for the whole race.”

Steve Asmussen, trainer of the runner-up, was less pleased with the result: “Flavien Prat almost drops Midnight Bourbon for the second time. My horse ran well. He survived.”

A fourth-out graduate going a mile at Santa Anita last October, Hot Rod Charlie was immediately thrown into the deep end after that, but he handled it just fine, running eventual champion Essential Quality (Tapit) to 3/4 of a length at 94-1 in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He defeated Midnight Bourbon by two lengths in the GII Louisiana Derby Mar. 20, and was a close third across the line in the GI Kenucky Derby May 1. Second to Essential Quality in the GI Belmont S. June 5 while earning a strong 108 Beyer Speed Figure, Hot Rod Charlie out-gamed current Derby runner-up Mandaloun (Into Mischief) in the Haskell stretch drive.

“Charlie is a rock star. I'm just a roadie but I am a pumped roadie, that's for sure,” said trainer Doug O'Neill, who was celebrating his first Pennsylvania Derby victory. “I could tell Charlie did not corner as well as he could. But it didn't seem like he affected [Midnight] Bourbon at all, thank God. He seemed like he was clear. Flavien had mentioned maybe putting a set of cheaters on him again. He said he got a little distracted being on the lead, kind of looking around and that might have caused him not to corner as well as he could have. This one did not seem as dramatic as the Monmouth race. For this to come on top of his last race, this was definitely exaggerated and had a long inquiry as well. Thank God he was clear and didn't cause any interference. I was pretty confident they were not going to take him down.”

O'Neill continued, “When you have speed and stamina and class, you can do some crazy, cool things. He displayed today that he has got some special qualities that, if he stays injury free, could lead to big stuff in November. I think he can be a big force in the Breeders' Cup. Obviously there are some big time horses out there that have more experience than him, but he is coming around at a good time.”

Pedigree Notes:

One of seven black-type winners–and the first at Grade I level–for his sire Oxbow, Hot Rod Charlie is the third Grade I winner produced by a daughter of Indian Charlie after his half-brother, 2019 Eclipse Champion Sprinter Mitole (Eskendereya), and GI Frizette S. winner Dayoutoftheoffice (Into Mischief).

The fifth foal, runner and winner out of the placed Indian Miss, Hot Rod Charlie is her second at the highest level after Mitole, who won the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint among four Grade I victories. She sold for $1.9 million to Larry Best's OXO Equine carrying to Into Mischief at the 2020 Keeneland November Sale. Indian Miss threw a filly by Into Mischief in 2019-also an OXO Equine purchase at $525,000 at last year's Keeneland September Sale–and a colt by that sire this term. A half-sister to GII Davona Dale S. heroine Live Lively (Medaglia d'Oro), she visited the court of Instagrand earlier this year.

Clairiere Caps Curlin Exacta in Cotillion

Stonestreet homebred Clairiere (Curlin) kicked home convincingly in Saturday's GI Cotillion S. at Parx to earn a first highest-level victory and snap a five-race winless streak while capping an exacta for her sire. A neck winner of the GII Rachel Alexandra S. in February, the Steve Asmussen pupil was second best to familiar foe Travel Column (Frosted) in the GII Fair Grounds Oaks a month later. She was fourth behind fellow Stonestreet product Malathaat (Curlin) in the GI Kentucky Oaks Apr. 30, third in the GII Mother Goose S. at Belmont June 26 and filled out another trifecta when Maracuja (Honor Code) upended Malathaat in the GI Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga July 24. Clairiere was shortening up from a second-place run behind Malathaat in the 10-panel GI Alabama S. back at the Spa Aug. 21, and was the lukewarm 5-2 favorite to provide Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen with a record fourth Cotillion trophy.

Breaking inward a bit at the start, Clairiere quickly recovered but was forced to tap on the brakes around the first turn before finally settling in third last and out in the clear. Main market rival Always Carina (Malibu Moon), meanwhile, showed the way through easy splits of :24.92 and :49.67 as Obligatory applied token pressure. Clairiere began to pick off foes rapidly heading around the final bend, and powered to the fore in midstretch to prove clearly best.

“I can't tell you how much it means for Clairiere and Stonestreet and that family that she comes from,” said Asmussen. “She was carrying along nicely within herself within striking range. She's kept herself in great company all year and getting good when it matters most. Obviously, we're going to speak to Stonestreet and stuff [with regards to a start in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff], with the numbers she's got she's consistently getting faster at the right time.”

Pedigree Note:

Clairiere is the 16th Grade I winner for her two-time Horse of the Year sire, who stands at Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa. She is also the second bred on the cross of Curlin over Bernardini after GI Coaching Club American Oaks victress Paris Lights. The GI Preakness S. winner also has an additional six Grade I winners out of daughters of sons or grandsons of Seattle Slew. The late Bernardini is rapidly making a name for himself as a broodmare sire, and the GI Cotillion S. star is his 12th Grade I winner in that role.

The first foal out of 'TDN Rising Star' and later GI Test S., GI Ogden Phipps S. and GI Personal Ensign S. heroine Cavorting, Clairiere is followed by juvenile filly La Crete (Medaglia d'Oro), and a yearling colt by Curlin that brought $550,000 from Muir Hut Stables during the recent Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Cavorting, a daughter of GII Molly Pitcher Breeders' Cup H. heroine Promenade Girl (Carson City), was barren to Quality Road for this year, but was bred back to Into Mischief this spring. She is also a half-sister to GII Penn Mile S. winner Moon Colony (Uncle Mo), while in the extended family is GI Californian S. scorer Another Review (Buckaroo), GI Santa Barbara H. winner No Review (Nodouble) and MGSW Dance Colony (Pleasant Colony), runner-up in the GI Gazelle H.

Jackie’s Warrior A Class Above in Gallant Bob

Leading sprinter Jackie's Warrior, who defeated Life is Good (Into Mischief) to win the GI H. Allen Jerkens S. Aug. 28 at Saratoga, followed up that rival's win in the GII Kelso H. at Belmont Saturday afternoon with an effortless victory of his own at Parx. Displaying his normal early dash, Jackie's Warrior clicked off an opening quarter in :21.97, though he did have some token 'pressure' from the rail-drawn Real Talk. Dispatching  that rival with consummate ease at the three-furlong pole, Jackie's Warrior was past the half-mile in :44.13, was under no urging whatsoever entering the stretch and had 6 3/4 lengths on the rallying Pickin' Time on the wire.

“He's exciting to watch,” trainer Steve Asmussen said of the winner. “What a very special horse he's been. He's run some game races and obviously we're hoping it's the ideal prep for the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint. He ran so valiantly with Life Is Good. They both ran such a good race that day, we just felt that this race would give him more time to the Breeders' Cup, and it was the right thing to do.

In addition to the Allen Jerkens, Jackie's Warrior has also won the 2021 GII Pat Day Mile and GII Amsterdam S.

Pedigree Notes:

Bloodstock agent Arthur Hoyeau purchased Jackie's Warrior's dam Unicorn Girl, in foal to Into Mischief, for $850,000 at last year's Keeneland November sale. The mare's 2-year-old daughter Lenni Girl (Candy Ride {Arg}) RNA'd for $540,000 at this year's Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale and for $675,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton October sale, while her now-yearling colt by American Pharoah sold to M.V. Magnier for $600,000 at last year's Keeneland November sale. With no reported foal this year, Unicorn Girl was bred back to Into Mischief.

Jackie's Warrior's second dam, Horah for Bailey, produced colts by Brethren in 2020 and 2021.
