Letruska Makes Easy Work Of Five-Furlong Breeze At Keeneland

“Bueno,” reported exercise rider Felipe Jacobo.

“She did it very easy,” added trainer Fausto Gutierrez.

In a nutshell, that summed up the 5-furlong work in :59 over a fast track Saturday morning for St. George Stable's homebred Letruska, the top-rated mare in North America.

Working on her own at just after 9 a.m. following the morning's second renovation break, Letruska posted fractions of :22.60, :35.40, :46.80, :59 and out 6 furlongs in 1:11 in her final preparations for next Sunday's $500,000 Juddmonte Spinster (G1). The work was the best of 55 at the distance.

For Letruska, this morning's move was her second local work since winning the Personal Ensign (G1) at Saratoga Aug. 28. Last Saturday, Letruska worked a best-of-76 half-mile in :47.40.

In addition to Letruska, several other horses pointing toward Fall Stars Weekend stakes put in main track works headed by Michael McLoughlin's Kevin's Folly, who covered 5 furlongs in :59.40 in company under Edgar Morales for trainer Tom Amoss. Kevin's Folly, third in the Hopeful (G1) in his most recent start, is headed to the $500,000 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) next Saturday.

Also working for Amoss was Jerry Caroom's Pipeline Girl (5 furlongs in :59.80) in preparation for Friday's opening-day $400,000 Darley Alcibiades (G1).

Ranlo Investment's Golden Pal, winner of last fall's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G2), worked 5 furlongs in 1:01 over a firm turf course in company with Indian Summer (L) Presented by Keeneland Select hopeful Averly Jane (1:01.80) in preparation for next Saturday's $200,000 Woodford (G2) Presented by TVG. Averly Jane is owned by Hat Creek Racing.

Golden Pal and Averly Jane were two of five turf workers for trainer Wesley Ward, whose contingent included Indian Summer hopeful Kaufymaker (5 furlongs in 1:02) and multiple Group 1 winner Campanelle (IRE) (5 furlongs in 1:02). Kaufymaker races for Gregory Kaufman. Stonestreet Stables own Campanelle.

Other turf works of note included George Sharp's Front Run the Fed (4 furlongs in :50.80) and Clipper Logistics' Space Traveller (GB) (4 furlongs in :50.40) for the $750,000 Keeneland Turf Mile (G1); Apogee Racing's Abscond (5 furlongs in 1:02) for the $400,000 First Lady (G1) Presented by UK HealthCare; and Phoenix Thoroughbred's Tiz the Bomb (4 furlongs in :49) for the $200,000 Castle & Key Bourbon (G2).

ARTIE (Artie Schiller) had plenty of admirers as a 7-2 chance making his debut in a 6 1/2-furlong turf maiden Sept. 4 and was a clear last early after being steadied right out of the machine. But he traveled sweetly thereafter, pinched ground on the turn and exploded through the lane while switching his leads back and forth to graduate by 9 1/2 lengths in fast time (video), good for an 89 Beyer Speed Figure. Gendarme Set For Arresting Performance in Sprinters’

A diverse field of 16 short-track specialists converges on Nakayama Racecourse Sunday as Japanese Group 1 racing emerges from a three-month hiatus in the 1200-metre Sprinters' S.

Koji Maeda's Gendarme (Kitten's Joy) was a Group 2 winner over a mile and Group 1-placed going 10 furlongs at two, but has gone through a renaissance of sorts since being cut back to distances between six and seven panels about this time last year. A listed winner at Niigata at seven-eighths last October, the homebred son of 2002 Sprinters' heroine Believe (Jpn) (Sunday Silence) was third to Resistencia (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) in the G3 Hankyu Hai (1400m) this past February before landing the Listed Shunrai S. in his first try over 1200 metres in April. Seventh and running on in the G2 Kitakyushu Kinen Aug. 22, he bombed the start of the G2 Centaur S. Sept. 12, setting himself a near-impossible task, but finished his final 600 metres in a race-quickest :32.6. They should fly early and Gendarme can be a late threat.

Danon Smash (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}), third in this event in 2019 and runner-up last term, tries to complete Japan's Group 1 sprint double, having just defeated Resistencia in the Takamatsunomiya Kinen in March. Prior to that effort, the son of Spinning Wildcat (Hard Spun) caused a 21-1 upset of the G1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint, but he was a flat sixth to the progressive Wellington (Aus) (All Too Hard {Aus}) when most recently returned to Sha Tin for the G1 Chairman's Sprint Prize Apr. 25.

Though Resistencia made the running in the Hankyu Hai and was part of the pace in the Centaur S., she has shown the ability to take a trail and come with a late run, as she did in the Takamatsunomiya Kinen. Hold-up tactics might be the flavour of the day, with the likes of the speedy 2019 runner-up Mozu Superflare (Speightstown) and Bien Fait (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) guaranteed to set a breakneck tempo.

Pixie Knight (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}) was a Group 3 winner over a mile earlier this year, but has run well at this trip in his last two appearances, finishing runner-up to First Force (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) in the July 4 G3 CBC Sho and to Resistencia last time. He typically settles midfield and will be run off his feet early, but can get first run on those coming from farther behind.

Breeders’ Cup Winner Aunt Pearl Retired; To Join Dayoutoftheoffice, Duopoly, Etoile In Fasig-Tipton November Sale

Aunt Pearl, winner of last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, has been retired from racing and will be consigned by Elite Sales at Fasig-Tipton's Night of the Stars on Nov. 9 in Lexington, Ky. She will be part of a consignment that features three other Grade 1 winners.

At last year's Fasig-Tipton Night of the Stars, Elite led all consigners by average, median, and gross sales, with its seven-horse consignment producing total sales of more than $22 million. Since its inception in 2017, Elite Sales has led the world in selling racehorses, having sold 15 millionaires in four years.

Aunt Pearl, owned by Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, Peter Deutsch, Michael Kisber and The Elkstone Group, went undefeated in 2020 with three gate-to-wire scores, culminating in her Breeders' Cup triumph. That race subsequently produced the winners of this year's Group 1 English 1,000 Guineas and the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, cementing Aunt Pearl's global status as one of the best of her generation.

The 3-year-old daughter of Lope de Vega, became a TDN 'Rising Star' with a five-length maiden win over the Churchill Downs turf course before setting a new stakes record in winning the G2 Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland, completing the 1 1/16 miles on turf in 1:40 4/5.

Also featured in Elite's Night of the Stars draft is last year's G1 Frizette Stakes winner Dayoutoftheoffice.

Campaigned by Siena Farm and Blazing Meadows Farm, Dayoutoftheoffice will be just the second Grade 1-winning daughter of top sire Into Mischief to be sold at a breeding stock sale. After breaking her maiden in her debut at Gulfstream Park, Dayoutoftheoffice shipped to Saratoga and won the G3 Schuylerville by six lengths before defeating subsequent Eclipse champion Vequist by two lengths in the Frizette. Dayoutoftheoffice rounded out her 2-year-old season with a second-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland, besting fellow Grade 1 winners Simply Ravishing and Princess Noor.

Elite will also consign Etoile, a 5-year-old Grade 1 winning daughter of leading international sire Siyouni, to the Fasig-Tipton auction.

A top-rung stakes performer on both sides of the Atlantic, she captured last year's G1 E.P. Taylor at Woodbine for owners Peter M. Brant, Mrs. M. V. Magnier, and Mrs. Paul Shanahan. Prior to her Grade 1 victory in North America, Etoile captured France's G3 Prix Cleopatre at Saint-Cloud before missing by just a length in the G1 Prix de Diane. She finished ahead of eight group or listed stakes winners in that classic race, including two G1 winners. Etoile is on schedule to defend her crown in the E.P Taylor Stakes on Oct. 15.

Rounding out Elite's quartet of Grade 1 winners is last year's American Oaks conqueror Duopoly.

Owned by Klaravich Stables, Duopoly won the G1 American Oaks in impressive wire-to-wire fashion, finishing the last quarter mile in a sharp :22.63. She defeated a strong field that included two other G1 winners, one of which was 2019 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner, Sharing. Prior to her win at Santa Anita, Duopoly also captured the Winter Memories Stakes at Aqueduct in front running style.
