Economic Indicators: Rescheduled 2020 Kentucky Derby Skews September Numbers

Equibase, North American racing's official database, released Tuesday its September 2021 statistics for the industry's economic indicators, including field size, wagering, and other data, along with year-to-date and 2019 and 2020 numbers. The database distributes 2020 and 2021 numbers and includes 2019's data for comparisons to pre-COVID-19 pandemic numbers.

Since the September of 2020 data includes that year's re-scheduled Kentucky Derby, it is no surprise that total wagering in September of 2021 is down significantly, by 12.32 percent. When compared with the year-to-date numbers, however, total wagering shows a positive trend: an increase of 13.80 percent.

Interestingly, the average wagering per race day category does show declines from the first nine months of 2020 compared to the first nine months of 2021, down over 10 percent. This is likely due to the fact that horse racing was one of the only viable sports on which wagering dollars could be spent during 2020, whereas most regular sporting events, and thus wagering on them, resumed during 2021.

When compared to the 2019 year-to-date figures, total wagering in 2021 is up 10.52 percent, a positive trend from pre-pandemic numbers. Race days and the number of races have continued to decrease, while field size is nearly steady at a decline of just 1.63 percent.

Mendelssohn Colt Tops Opening Session Of Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale

The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale kicked off Monday afternoon with significant increases in gross, average, and median over the first session of the last two editions of the sale (2019-2020) and the lowest RNA rate since 2016, compared to full sale results.

A colt from the first crop of Mendelssohn topped Monday's session, fetching a bid of $230,000 from buyer Oracle Bloodstock, agent (video).

The bay colt was offered as Hip 189 by Dreamtime Stables, agent. Out of the Malibu Moon mare Tasha's Moon, a half-sister to Grade 2 placed stakes winner Esmeraldina, the colt hails from the immediate family of Grade 1 winner Off the Tracks and Grade 2 winner and sire Concord Point. Hip 189 was bred in Kentucky by Classic Thoroughbred.

Earlier in the session, a son of Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags sold for $220,000 to Mac Robertson, agent for Novogratz Racing Stables (video).

Dark Hollow, agent, offered the colt as Hip 113. Out of the winning Flatter mare Safe Journey, the colt is a half-brother to four winners, including O Dionysus (Bodemeister) and Joy (Pure Prize), both multiple stakes winners on the mid-Atlantic racing circuit. Hip 113 was bred in Maryland by Dark Hollow Farm.

Mendelssohn was also responsible for the session's top-priced filly, which sold for $160,000 to Donato Lanni, agent for Caroline & Greg Bentley (video).

Offered as Hip 159 by Northview Stallion Station (David Wade), agent, the filly is a half-sister to a pair of winners out of the winning Curlin mare Split It. Bred in Maryland by Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds, Hip 159 is from the immediate family of champion filly Epitome and multimillionaire War Story.

Rounding out the top five were a pair of fillies with strong pedigrees:

Hip 76, a daughter of Tiznow out of a Not For Love half-sister to four-time Grade 1 winner and two-time Maryland Horse of the Year Knicks Go, which sold for $150,000 to SBM. The filly was bred in Maryland by GreenMount Farm & Tiznow Syndicate and consigned by GreenMount Farm, agent.
Hip 11, a filly from the first crop of Preakness Stakes winner Cloud Computing, who is a three-parts sister to course record-setting stakes winner Dirty (Maclean's Music), which sold for $145,000 to Newtown Anner Stud. The Maryland-bred filly was consigned by Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services, agent.

Over the course of the session, 149 yearlings sold for a gross of $4,577,300. The average – $30,720 – marked 25.6 percent and 16.9 percent increases over 2020 and 2019's first sessions, respectively. The median rose 33.3 percent to $20,000 from the first-session median of $15,000 achieved in both 2020 and 2019. Eight horses sold for $100,000 during the session, compared to two sold at or above that price point in 2020 and five in 2019. The RNA rate was 16.3 percent.

Results are available online. The sale resumes Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 10 a.m.

Six-Time Stakes Winner Galilean Retired; Stud Plans Pending

Late September marked the end of the racing career for Galilean, a Cal-bred champion and six-time stakes winner for West Point, Denise Barker and William Sandbrook.

Stud plans will be announced soon for the 5-year-old son of Uncle Mo.

The sale topper at the Barretts spring sale of 2-year-olds in training in 2018, Galilean won stakes as a 2- and 3-year-old for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and as a 4-year-old for trainer John Sadler.

In 2020, Galilean earned champion California-bred older male honors for a versatile campaign that saw him win the Soi Phet Stakes at a mile on dirt, the California Dreamin' Stakes at a mile and a sixteenth on turf, and the California Flag Handicap at 5 1/2 furlongs on the grass.

“Just a fun, honest horse to have in the barn,” West Point CEO Terry Finley said.

Custom For Carlos Colt Tops Louisiana Yearling And Mixed Sale

The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association's Breeders Sales Company of Louisiana held its 2021 Yearling Sale followed by mixed session, Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Equine Sales Facility in Opelousas.

With 13 outs and 22 RNAs, a total of 87 head sold for $898,000. The yearling average was $13,027. The weanling average was $3,117, and the mare average was $2,167.

Hip 7, a Custom For Carlos colt out of Labadeel, a Forest Wildcat mare, was purchased by Ricky Lagrange for $47,000 to top the sale. The bay colt was consigned by Clear Creek Stud, agent.

Hip 54, also out of the Clear Creek Stud consignment, was purchased by Norman Stables for $45,000, the second highest price of the day. A half-sister to stakes-placed Raising the Ante, the bay filly is by Midnight Storm out of the Majestic Warrior mare, Ante Up Annie.
