Weekend Lineup: Keeneland’s Fall Stars Features Nine ‘Win And You’re In’ Races

Keeneland's 17-day Fall Meet kicks off with a blockbuster Fall Stars Weekend featuring 10 stakes races, including nine Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” races. The weekend stakes action also features six “Win and You're In” races from Belmont Park.

Races in this weekend's rundown are listed in chronological order (all times Eastern). Full previews, when available, can be found through the link for each race.

TVG will feature racing from Keeneland, Santa Anita, Gulfstream Park, Laurel Park, Woodbine and more. Fans can tune in on TVG, TVG2 and the Watch TVG app which is available on Amazon Fire, Roku and connected Apple TV devices. NBC Sports will also provide coverage of this weekend's “Win and Your In” races from Keeneland.

“America's Day at the Races” will be broadcasting live from Belmont Park on Friday, Oct. 8 on FS2 from 12:30 – 5:30 pm; on Saturday, Oct. 9 on FS2 from 12:30 pm – 5:30 pm; and on Sunday, Oct. 10 on FS2 from 12:30 – 1 pm., FS1 from 1:00-2:00 pm and on FS2 from 2:00 – 5:30 p.m.

Friday, October 8

5:10 PM ET – $250,000 Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix (Gr. 2-Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In”) at Keeneland on TVG and NBC Sports

Special Reserve is the 9-5 morning line favorite in a field of seven sprinters for the six-furlong Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes (G2). The Kentucky-bred son of Midshipman is trained by Mike Maker and has won four of six 2021 starts.

5:45 PM ET – $400,000 Darley Alcibiades (Gr. 1-Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In”) at Keeneland on TVG and NBC Sports

Two-year-old fillies are in the spotlight in the Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades on the opening day of Keeneland's Fall Meet. A field of 12 is entered in the 1 1/16-mile main track Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” qualifying race for the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Maryland-bred Runup is two for two on dirt after finishing third in her Colonial Downs turf debut. The daughter of Eclipse Award Champion Sprinter Runhappy won the one-mile Sorority Stakes last out at Monmouth Park for trainer Laura Wohlers. Kentucky-bred Juju's Map, a daughter of Liam's Map who broke her maiden on September 3 at Ellis Park in her second career start, is the 5-2 morning line favorite for Eclipse Award-winning trainer Brad Cox.

Saturday, October 9

2:45 PM ET – $250,000 Vosburgh (Gr. 2-Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In”) at Belmont Park on FS2

Mr. Amore Stable's Firenze Fire will defend his Vosburgh title in Saturday's six furlongs event, a “Win and You're In” qualifier for the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Sprint on November 6 at Del Mar. The Florida-bred son of Poseidon's Warrior is trained by Kelly Breen. Baby Yoda, another Florida-bred, is the morning line favorite after his sharp Saratoga allowance win last out. The 3-year-old Prospective gelding stopped the clock in 1:14.33 for six and a half furlongs to mark his third win in four lifetime starts.

3:15 PM ET – $150,000 Matron Stakes (Gr. 3T) at Belmont Park on FS2

Trainer Brad Cox sends out Bubble Rock, a daughter of More Than Ready, in the six-furlong Matron over the Belmont inner turf course. The Kentucky-bred filly broke her maiden in her second career start at Saratoga on September 3 and is listed as the morning line favorite. New York-bred Dufresne faces graded stakes company for the first time following a third-place finish in the listed Woodbine Cares Stakes last month for trainer Michael Trombetta.

3:40 PM ET – $200,000 Woodford Stakes (Gr. 2T) at Keeneland on TVG

Eight-year-old Extravagant Kid, an earner of more than $1.6 million, takes on six other turf sprinters in the 5 ½-furlong Woodford Stakes (G2T). The Florida-bred gelded son of Kiss the Kid won the Al Quoz Sprint (G1) over Meydan's turf course in March and followed that with a third in the King's Stand Stakes (G1) at Ascot. Trainer Brendan Walsh's charge was unplaced last out July 10 in the Darley July Cup (G1) at Newmarket. Fellow Florida-bred Golden Pal, the 3-year-old Uncle Mo son of graded stakes-winning turf sprinter Lady Shipman, is a leading contender and won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2) over Keeneland's turf course last November.

3:47 PM ET – $500,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (Gr. 1T) at Belmont Park on FS2

Otter Bend Stables' Gufo, winner of the Grade 1 Resorts World Casino Sword Dancer on Travers Day at Saratoga heads the field in Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, named after the esteemed writer and columnist for Daily Racing Form. The Kentucky-bred son of Declaration of War won the Grade 1 Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes last October over this course for trainer Christophe Clement. Japan (GB), a 5-year-old son of Galileo (IRE) trained by Aiden O'Brien, finished second by a nose to Gufo in the aforementioned Sword Dancer in his first U.S. start.

4:12 PM ET – $250,000 Thoroughbred Club of America (Gr. 2-Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In”) at Keeneland on TVG and NBC Sports

Millionaire Bell's the One is a leading contender in the 6-furlong Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America, a Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” qualifying race for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) that drew a compact six-horse field. Thirteen fillies and mares are entered in the First Lady, a Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” qualifying race for the $2 million Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1). Godolphin's Althiqa (GB), winner this year of three of four starts, enters the one-mile First Lady off consecutive Grade 1 wins for trainer Charles Appleby. Kentucky-bred Princess Grace has won each of her three 2021 starts, including the Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf Stakes (G3) most recently on September 11.

Thirteen 2-year-olds are scheduled to line up for the 108th running of the 1 1/16-mile Claiborne Breeders' Futurity, a Breeder's Cup “Win and You're In” qualifying race for the $2 million TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). Stellar Tap, a Kentucky-bred son of Tapit with two lifetime starts, was unplaced in Churchill Downs' Iroquois Stakes (G3) on September 18 after breaking his maiden going seven furlongs at Saratoga. Kevin's Folly, a Kentucky-bred Distorted Humor colt, won on debut at Saratoga and finished third in the Hopeful Stakes (G1) in his second career start on September 6.

4:44 PM ET – $200,000 Indian Summer Stakes (“Breeders' Cup Win and You're In”) at Keeneland on TVG and NBC Sports

Ten two-year-old turf sprinters are entered in the 5 ½ furlong Indian Summer Stakes, a Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” qualifying race for the $1 million Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2). Undefeated Averly Jane, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Midshipman, is one of two fillies in the field. The Wesley Ward trainee broke her maiden in her April debut on Keeneland's main track and has yet to run on the turf. In Saratoga's Skidmore Stakes, a race moved from the turf to dirt, Averly Jane led at every pole on her way to a 7 ¼ length score in her most recent start.

5:15 PM ET – $500,000 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes (Gr. 1-Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In”) at Keeneland on TVG and NBC Sports

Letruska, winner of four races in a row and six of her last seven, stands out in this 1 1/8 mile main track Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” qualifying race for the $2 million Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff. Included in the 5-year-old mare's current winning streak are three Grade 1s. The Kentucky-bred daughter of Super Saver began her career with six consecutive wins in Mexico and now has won 16 of 21 lifetime starts. She is currently rated behind only Knicks Go on the NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll and faces six others in the 66th running of this Grade 1. This is Letruska's first start at Keeneland.

5:46 PM ET – $200,000 Castle & Key Bourbon Stakes (Gr. 2-Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In”) at Keeneland on TVG and NBC Sports

A field of 14 is expected to start in the Castle & Key Bourbon Stakes (G2T), a Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” qualifying race for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). The 1 1/6 miles turf contest for 2-year-olds attracted 16 entries, including two also-eligibles. Tiz the Bomb, a Kentucky-bred Hit It A Bomb colt trained by Kenny McPeek, is a leading contender after taking the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile Stakes last out after breaking his maiden at Ellis Park by 14 ¼ lengths in his second career start. That one-mile dirt race was originally scheduled for the turf.

1:57 PM ET – $150,000 Durham Cup Stakes (Gr. 3) at Woodbine on TVG

A compact field of five is entered in this 1 1/6 miles race over Woodbine's All Weather Track, including 2019 Belmont Stakes winner Sir Winston. The Kentucky-bred son of Awesome Again has earned over $1 million in his 16-race career and most recently won a Woodbine allowance race in his only start this year. Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse also entered Tap It to Win, a Florida-bred son of Tapit who exits a win in the Grade 3 Seagram Cup Stakes.

2:43 PM ET – $150,000 Futurity Stakes (Gr. 3T-Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In”) at Belmont Park on FS2

Eight 2-year-old turf sprinters, including two fillies, are entered in this 6-furlong Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” qualifying event for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2). Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher sends out Midnight Worker for his first turf start. The Kentucky-bred Outwork colt won his debut on the main track in a Saratoga maiden special weight and followed that with a third-place finish in Monmouth's Grade 3 Sapling Stakes, also on dirt. Chi Town Lady is two for two after taking Saratoga's Bolton Landing Stakes last out. The Verrazano filly is trained by Wesley Ward.

Multiple graded stakes winner Horologist takes on seven rivals to defend her title in the 1 1/8 mile Beldame for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. The New Jersey-bred daughter of Gemologist has two wins on the year, including an easy 8 ½ length score in Saratoga's Summer Colony Stakes. She won last year's Beldame as the longest shot in a 4-horse field that included this year's distaff sensation, Letruska.

4:21 PM ET – $150,000 Knickerbocker (Gr. 3T) at Belmont Park on FS2

Nine older horses face off in the 1 1/8 mile Knickerbocker over the Belmont inner turf course. Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher has two entries in En Wye Cee and No Word. The former is a Kentucky-bred son of Declaration of War that finished third in last year's Knickerbocker and has had just one start since, a third-place finish in a Saratoga turf allowance optional claiming event over the same distance. No Word, second in last year's Grade 1 Belmont Derby, exits a second place finish in the Bernard Baruch Handicap (G2) over the Saratoga turf.

5:09 PM ET – $150,000 Ontario Matron Stakes (Gr. 3) at Woodbine on TVG

Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse has three entered in the six-horse field, including Skygaze, a multiple-graded stakes-placed Kentucky-bred daughter of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. In her most recent start, Skygaze won the Belle Mahone Stakes on Woodbine's All Weather Track for her second win in three 2021 starts. Crystal Glacier, by Curlin, rallied late to finish second to her stablemate in the Belle Mahone and could be the main threat.

Grade 2 Winner Leinster Retired To Pleasant Acres Stallions In Florida

Pleasant Acres Stallions is pleased to announce the arrival of Leinster (Majestic Warrior / Vassar, by Royal Academy) – who will stand in Florida for the 2022 breeding season for a $5,000 fee.

After earning $764,971 with a record of 6-6-5 from 24 starts, Leinster raced under Amy Dunne, Brenda Miley, Jean Wilkinson, and Westrock Stable. Now retired, Leinster is settling into his new home at Pleasant Acres Stallions ahead of the 2022 breeding season.

“Leinster is an exceptional addition to the stallion barn at Pleasant Acres Stallions,” said Joe Barbazon. “A world class turf sprinter, he brings with him two blazing fast track records in graded events and four triple digit Beyers.”

Out of the Royal Academy champion-producing mare Vassar, Leinster is half-brother to two-time Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner Stormy Liberal – the champion turf male of 2018. In 2019, Leinster handily beat Stormy Liberal in the six-furlong $700,000 Grade 3 Runhappy Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs.

Leinster is a four-time graded stakes winner – including the 2020 G3 Troy Stakes in Saratoga where he beat multiple graded stakes winner and world record setting Disco Partner, as well as multiple graded stakes winner Pure Sensation. Leinster set his first track record that day when he covered 5 1/2 furlongs on the Mellon Turf in a time of 1:00.23, breaking the old track record of 1:00.46 set by Lady Shipman in 2015.

The Rusty Arnold trainee went on to set a Keeneland course record by racing 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:00.86 in the $150,000 G2 Shakertown Stakes, where he beat multiple graded stakes winner and Grade 1-placed Extravagant Kid – five times total in graded events.

Leinster topped off his impressive career by winning the $150,000 G2 Woodford Stakes at Keeneland after running second in the same race the previous year. He went on to finish third in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, where he beat the sensational multiple Grade 1 winner Got Stormy. In his final campaign, Leinster finished his career in style by winning the $100,000 G3 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint Stakes this past February.

“Track record holder at Saratoga and Keeneland. You don't get any faster than that and a beautiful individual to go with it,” says Trainer George “Rusty” Arnold.

Leinster's sire, Majestic Warrior (A.P. Indy / Dream Supreme, by Seeking the Gold) immediately excelled for his late owner and breeder and New York Yankees kingpin, George Steinbrenner. Majestic Warrior, a son of A.P. Indy, emerged in the competitive 2-year-old world of Saratoga in 2007 to win his 6 1/2 -furlong debut by 3 1/2 lengths and in his subsequent start, he rallied to take the G1 Hopeful Stakes by 2 1/4 lengths.

Leinster's dam, Vassar (Royal Academy / Dixie Fine, by L'emigrant) has produced seven winners out of eight runners as a broodmare – where she has amassed $3.8 million in progeny earnings to date – and has produced exceptional athletes including a champion, two graded black type winners, one black type winner, one graded blacktype placer, and one blacktype placer.

Leinster joins stallions Amira's Prince, Bellavia, Breaking Lucky, Bucchero, Curlin's Honor, Gunnevera, Handsome Mike, Long On Value, Neolithic, No Never No More, Ride On Curlin, and Sweetontheladies, at the 220-acre farm located just northwest of Ocala.

Pleasant Acres Stallions has received many accolades for excellence, including 2017 Florida Freshman Sire of the Year for Poseidon's Warrior, 2017 DRF Florida-bred Beyer Award, 2009 Florida Breeder of the Year, 2009 Florida Broodmare of the Year, Breeder of the 2009 Florida Horse of the Year, and was ranked third in the nation for leading breeders in 2009 by average earnings per starter with 10 or more starters.

North American Foal Crop Declines 3.3 Percent In 2021

The Jockey Club today reported that 1,447 stallions covered 29,699 mares in North America during 2020, according to statistics compiled through Oct. 4, 2021. These breedings have resulted in 19,021 live foals of 2021 being reported to The Jockey Club on Live Foal Reports.

The Jockey Club estimates that the number of live foals reported so far is 85-90 percent complete. The reporting of live foals of 2021 is down 3.3 percent from last year at this time when The Jockey Club had received reports for 19,677 live foals of 2020.

In addition to the 19,021 live foals of 2021 reported through Oct. 4, The Jockey Club also received 2,195 No Foal Reports for the 2021 foaling season. Ultimately, the 2021 registered foal crop is projected to reach 19,200.

The number of stallions declined 6.8 percent from the 1,552 reported for 2019 at this time last year, while the number of mares bred declined 4.8 percent from the 31,198 reported for 2019.

The 2020 breeding statistics are available alphabetically by stallion name through the Resources – Fact Book link on The Jockey Club homepage at jockeyclub.com.

Kentucky annually leads all states and provinces in terms of Thoroughbred breeding activity. Kentucky-based stallions accounted for 55.5 percent of the mares reported bred in North America in 2020 and 60.6 percent of the live foals reported for 2021.

The 16,485 mares reported bred to 212 Kentucky stallions in 2020 have produced 11,535 live foals, a 2.7 percent decrease on the 11,851 Kentucky-sired live foals of 2020 reported at this time last year. The number of mares reported bred to Kentucky stallions in 2020 decreased 4.4 percent compared to the 17,240 reported for 2019 at this time last year.

Among the 10 states and provinces with the most mares covered in 2020, three produced more live foals in 2021 than in 2020 as reported at this time last year: Maryland, Ontario, and New Mexico. The following table shows the top 10 states and provinces ranked by number of state/province-sired live foals of 2021 reported through October 4, 2021.

Mischevious Alex To Stand In Japan

Mischevious Alex (Into Mischief–White Pants Night, by Speightstown), the romping 5 1/2-length winner of this year's GI Carter H. at Aqueduct, will enter stud in 2022 at the Shizunai Stallion Station on the island of Hokkaido, according to a release from the Japan Bloodhorse Breeders' Association (JBBA).

Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, Mischevious Alex was a $75,000 Keeneland September yearling and was acquired privately by Charles Zacney's Cash Is King LLC after failing to meet his reserve at $140,000 at OBS April in 2019. A debut winner at Parx that June for trainer John Servis, the bay announced his arrival with a 9 3/4-length thumping of his rivals in the Parx Juvenile S. following which LC Racing bought into the colt. Mischevious Alex stamped himself as the leading sprinter/miler of his generation in early 2020, winning the seven-furlong GIII Swale S. by seven lengths and the GIII Gotham S. going Aqueduct's one-turn mile.

Turned over to Saffie Joseph, Jr. for his 4-year-old season, Mischevious Alex annexed a pair of starts in Florida, including the GIII Gulfstream Park Sprint S. before validating 4-5 favoritism in the Carter, accounting for MGISW Mind Control (Stay Thirsty). A courageous third in the GI Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan H. in June after battling Knicks Go (Paynter) on the front end, Mischevious Alex retires with a record of 15-7-1-2 and earnings of $734,355. According to the release from the JBBA, Mischevious Alex will leave for Japan in early November. Shizunai Stallion Station is also home to American imports Animal Kingdom, Declaration of War, Eskendereya and Noble Mission (GB).

Mischevious Alex, who is bred on the same cross as fellow Grade I winner Mia Mischief, is out of a winning half-sister to the fleet GSW Hebbronville (Majesticperfection) from the same Harlan's Holiday sire line and to SW & GSP Master of Disaster (Dance Master). Into Mischief, who just celebrated his 100th black-type winner, is the sire of 13 winners from 17 runners in Japan, including the Group 2-placed Delta Barows.
