Firenze Fire To Enter Stud In Japan After Breeders’ Cup Sprint

Grade 1 winner Firenze Fire will enter stud at Arrow Stud in Japan for the 2022 breeding season, following a projected final start in the upcoming Breeders' Cup Sprint, Daily Racing Form reports.

The 6-year-old son of Poseidon's Warrior has won 14 of 37 starts heading into this year's Breeders' Cup, earning $2,710,350 as a Florida-born homebred for Mr. Amore Stable.

Firenze Fire has been a stakes winner in each of his five seasons, starting with his 2-year-old campaign when he won on debut at Monmouth Park and took the Grade 3 Sanford Stakes, before highlight his season with a triumph in the G1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park.

He was put on the Triple Crown trail at three, winning the listed Jerome Stakes and earning enough qualifying points to earn a spot in the 2018 Kentucky Derby, where he finished 11th. Firenze Fire was then moved to the sprint ranks, where he saw immediate dividends, with wins in the G3 Dwyer Stakes and G3 Gallant Bob Stakes, and a third in the G1 H. Allen Jerkens Stakes.

The horse's 4-year-old campaign featured listed wins in the Runhappy Stakes, Fabulous Strike Stakes, and Gravesend Stakes in the Mid-Atlantic region, and Grade 1 placings in the Forego Stakes and Vosburgh Stakes. His 5-year-old season started with a win in the G3 General George Stakes, and later included scores in the G2 True North Stakes and G2 Vosburgh Stakes, before running third in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Keeneland.

His 2021 campaign started with wins in the G3 Runhappy Stakes and G2 True North Stakes. He enters the Breeders' Cup off a pair of runner-up efforts in the G1 Forego Stakes and G2 Vosburgh Stakes.

Firenze Fire is out of the placed Langfuhr mare My Every Wish.

Firenze Fire will join a roster at Arrow Stud that also includes Eclipse Award winners California Chrome and Shanghai Bobby.

Tapit Colt Headlines Opening Session Of Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Sale

Strong trade marked the opening session of the 2021 Kentucky October Yearlings sale Monday at Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Ky.

A colt by three-time leading sire Tapit topped the session when sold for $700,000 to Donato Lanni, agent for SF Racing, Starlight Racing, and Madaket Stables (video).

Bedouin Bloodstock, agent, consigned the colt as Hip 22. The bay colt is the first foal out of the stakes winning Shanghai Bobby mare March X Press, a half-sister to stakes winner and stakes producer Harlan's Honor. Bred in Kentucky, Hip 22's price tag matched the second-highest paid for a colt in the history of the Kentucky October Yearlings sale.

“I'm very pleased with the opening session of the October sale,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “(There was) spirited bidding at all levels, lots of competition, and a very diverse crowd that was here to buy horses… It's very encouraging.”

Rounding out the sessions top five prices were:

  • Hip 21, a Justify colt out of multiple stakes winner Maple Forest (Forestry), purchased for $350,000 by John P. Fort from the consignment of Blue Heaven Farm (video). The chestnut colt is a half-brother to multiple graded stakes-placed multiple stakes winner Heartwood. Hip 21 was bred in Kentucky by Blue Heaven Farm.
  • Hip 266, a Union Rags colt out of graded stakes winner Purely Hot (Pure Prize), purchased for $235,000 by Redwings from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. The bay colt is a half-brother to two winners, including 2019 Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes winner Eight Rings (Empire Maker). Hip 266 was bred in Kentucky by Orpendale, Cheslton, & Wynatt.
  • Hip 273, a colt by the late Malibu Moon out the stakes-placed Unbridled's Song mare Queenie's Song, purchased for $200,000 by Cypress Creek LLC from the consignment of Timber Town, agent. The dark bay or brown colt is a half-brother to two winners, including multiple stakes winner Oliviaofthedesert (Bernardini). Hip 273 was bred in Kentucky by Timber Town Stable LLC and Jane Winegardner.
  • Hip 302, a filly by successful young sire Liam's Map out of the winning Indian Charlie mare Recoupe, purchased for $190,000 by West Bloodstock from the consignment of St George Sales, agent. The gray or roan filly stakes-placed winner Compensate. Hip 302 was bred in Kentucky by Westpoint Stables.

“I don't think it was any surprise that there was a lot of demand,” added Browning. “We've seen strength in the yearling sales (this year)… We've got a lot of real quality horses still to sell in the next three days, and we're looking forward (to it).”

Overall, 341 yearlings sold for $11,016,900 with 32 yearlings sold for $100,000 or more. Compared to last year's opening session, the gross rose 31.3 percent from $8,393,800. The average rose 18.8 percent to $40,208 from $33,846, while the median increased 13.3% to $17,000 from $15,000. The session RNA rate was 19.6 percent.

Horoscope Tops Opening Session Of Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale

The Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale got off to a strong start with 14 lots selling for 100,000 guineas or more and a top price of 325,000 guineas.

The world's largest horses in training sale saw the average and median rise 60 percent and 78 percent respectively compared with the opening session last year, whilst the clearance rate was a typically robust 88 percent.

BBA Ireland's Michael Donohoe signed for the top two lots during the opening session with both lots headed for the Middle East. The second of the pair and the top priced lot for the day was the 3-year-old colt Horoscope who was consigned by Coolmore and knocked down for 325,000 guineas.

“He goes to the Middle East,” revealed Donohoe. “With a rating of 110 he can run in all those top races in the Emirates. He goes on quick ground and he is versatile, he is a good-looking horse and he has the pedigree to be a stallion down the road.”

The son of No Nay Never has won at Listed level for trainer Aidan O'Brien and was third in the Group 2 Boomerang Mile at Leopardstown two starts ago.

Donohoe had earlier secured the Michael O'Callaghan trained I Am Magic for 200,000 guineas and the son of Magician is set to head to Saudi Arabia. The 2-year-old colt was a close up third in the Group 3 Killavullan Stakes at Leopardstown on his most recent start, which earned him an official rating of 101.

“He has been bought for a Middle Eastern client to run in the Saudi Derby on Saudi Cup day,” said Donohoe. “He has come recommended by Michael [O'Callaghan], I have seen his races and seen him breeze. He is a big horse and there is more to come from him.”

I Am Magic was purchased by O'Callaghan at the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale for 95,000 guineas, having been a 14,000 guineas Tattersalls Ascot yearling.

Lane’s End 2022 Stallion Roster Topped By Quality Road At $150,000

Lane's End in Versailles, Ky., has released its advertised fees for the 2022 breeding season, led by leading sire Quality Road at $150,000, unchanged from the previous year.

Quality Road, a 15-year-old son of Elusive Quality, is led this year by Grade 1 winner and Breeders' Cup Juvenile contender Corniche, Grade 2 winner Astronaut, multiple Grade 3 winner Dr Post, and Grade 1-placed Dunbar Road.

After a standout debut season for his yearlings at auction, Grade 1 winner City of Light will stand for $60,000 after previously standing for $40,000.

A 7-year-old son of Quality Road, City of Light has been represented by a pair of seven-figure yearlings in 2021, including a $1.7-million colt that topped this year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Veteran sire Twirling Candy also saw his fee increase in 2022, going from $40,000 to $60,000.

The 14-year-old son of Candy Ride was led this year by Preakness Stakes winner Rombauer, joined by Grade 1 winner and Breeders' Cup Juvenile contender Pinehurst, Grade 3 winner Gear Jockey, and Grade 1-placed Dream Shake.

Two stallions' fees will be determined by the results at the Breeders' Cup.

Connect, an 8-year-old son of Curlin, is among North America's leading freshman sires, led by Grade 1 winner and Breeders' Cup Juvenile contender Rattle N Roll, who won the G1 Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland in October. He is also the sire of Hidden Connection, who earned a “Win and You're In” berth to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies after taking the G3 Pocahontas Stakes.

The fee for Liam's Map could also fluctuate by the Breeders' Cup outcomes, starting with a base fee of $40,000. The 10-year-old Unbridled's Song horse has a Juvenile Fillies hopeful in Grade 1 winner Juju's Map.

The roster also includes newcomer Code of Honor, a Grade 1-winning son of Noble Mission whose fee will be announced after his final start in the G1 Clark Stakes.
