Dialed In Tops Darby Dan Farm’s 2022 Stallion Roster At $15,000

Darby Dan Farm has set 2022 stud fees for its roster of 12 stallions that will stand the upcoming breeding season, led by Dialed In who will stand for $15,000 S&N, the same fee as a year ago. The roster also features Tapiture, Higher Power, and Modernist, new for 2022, who will each stand for $10,000 S&N.

Dialed In, champion freshman sire of 2016 and a perennial leading sire of his crop ever since, is a leading sire of 3-year-olds in 2021 with nine black-type sophomores and five graded stakes horses. Among his top runners on the year are 3-year-olds Super Stock, winner of the $1 million Grade 1 Arkansas Derby and the Ellis Park Derby, and Mr. Wireless, winner of the G3 Indiana Derby and the G3 West Virginia Derby.

Tapiture continues to sire runners at the highest levels. The son of Tapit is far and away the number-one third-crop sire by winners in 2021 with 115 and he ranks fourth by progeny earnings ($5,984,770). Tapiture also tops the cumulative third-crop sire list by winners with 168 and ranks third with lifetime earnings of $11,864,933.

Among Tapiture's leading runners this year are Vertical Threat, winner of the Russell Road Stakes, You Talkin to Me, winner of the Iowa Breeders' Derby, and impressive 2-year-old stakes winner and stakes-placed Flashfordani, winner of the Birdcatcher Stakes. He is also represented by Jesus' Team, runner-up to division leader Knicks Go in the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes in January and his sire's leading earner on the year, having banked $821,800 this season.

Higher Power will stand his second season at stud in 2022. A dominant 5 1/4-length winner of the 2019 G1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar, where he defeated a field made up entirely of graded stakes winners, including three Grade 1 winners, the son of Medaglia d'Oro was a five-time winner of more than $1.5 million. He posted three triple-digit Beyers in his stellar career, including a 107 Beyer in the Pacific Classic. Stakes-placed on dirt and turf, Higher Power also placed in the Breeders' Cup Classic, G1 Hollywood Gold Cup, and the G1 Awesome Again Stakes.

Modernist, a multiple graded stakes winner by leading sire Uncle Mo out of the Bernardini mare Symbolic Gesture, a half-sister to both Sweet Catomine, champion 2-year-old filly and winner of the 2004 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, and Life Is Sweet, winner of the 2009 Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic, has been retired and will stand his first season at Darby Dan in 2022 in partnership with Matt Bowling of Bowling Bloodstock. Winner of the 2020 G2 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds and the G3 Excelsior Stakes at Aqueduct the following year, Modernist earned $576,300 for Marty and Pam Wygod and trainer Bill Mott.

Darby Dan will once again be offering various incentive programs in 2022 to provide value to breeders, including Profit Protection, Share the Upside, Black-Type Bonanza, and Goldmine 20/20 Match Program.

Grade 1 Winner Paris Lights Supplemented To Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale

Keeneland has announced that Grade 1 winner Paris Lights, a 4-year-old daughter of Curlin who descends from the influential broodmare Blush With Pride, has been supplemented to Book 1 of the 78th November Breeding Stock Sale, to be held Nov. 10-19. Consigned by ELiTE, agent, the daughter of the Bernardini mare Paris Bikini is cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect.

Keeneland will accept supplements to Book 1 until the November Sale begins.

Bred by WinStar Farm and campaigned by WinStar Stablemates Racing, Paris Lights demonstrated her versatility during a four-race win streak that included the 2020 Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks over 1 1/8 miles at Saratoga and this year's G3 Distaff over seven furlongs at Aqueduct. Paris Lights, who was trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, scored the first two victories of her career at Churchill Downs before winning the prestigious Saratoga stakes.

Retiring Mario Pino Voted Jockey Of The Week After 7,000th Win

Jockey Mario Pino recorded his 7,000th career victory on October 20th at Presque Isle Downs an achievement that earned the journeyman rider Jockey of the Week for October 18 through October 24. The honor, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, is for jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 1050 active, retired and permanently disabled jockeys in the United States. Riding for trainer and co-owner, S. Matthew Kintz, Pino was aboard Enjoy the Music in a claiming race for three-year-olds and up. Off as the favorite in the field of seven, he rallied from off the pace to win by three-quarters of a length for the milestone. “It feels great,” said Pino of the winning 7,000. “Sometimes I have to pinch myself. Did I do it? It was really neat. It worked out really nice.”

Pino had been considering retirement once he had achieved the lofty goal of 7,000 wins and on closing day of the Presque Isle meet, Pino rode in his last race. His career statistics include 42,650 mounts with 7,001 firsts and more than $131 million in purses. His racing achievements include winning seven winners on a single day at Colonial Downs in 2002 and a six-win day at Laurel Park in 2003. He won 36 graded stakes including three Grade 1s as well as numerous riding titles. In addition to his victories on the track, Pino has been awarded the Mike Venezia Memorial Award, and the prestigious George Woolf Memorial Award which honors riders whose career and personal character earn esteem for the individual and the sport of thoroughbred racing and is voted on by fellow jockeys. Pino is also in the Maryland State Athletic Hall of Fame. Riding regularly for an incredible 44 years mainly in the Mid-Atlantic region, Pino joins an elite group of just nine other jockeys who have achieved at least 7,000 wins. Even though he is only 57 wins away from the next winningest rider, retired jockey Angel Cordero, Jr., Pino commented: “I'm good with 7,001, and I get to walk away happy and healthy. You know what, I kinda feel satisfied with my career. I really do. I feel like I did what I could do.” Pino out polled jockeys Junior Alvarado who won a graded stakes at Keeneland, Tyler Gaffalione who was the leading jockey by purses won, Jareth Loveberry with two stakes wins at Hawthorne and Tim Thornton who set a Delta Downs record for wins on a single card with seven as well as recording the most wins for the week with 13.

Larry Collmus To Move Into Expanded Role With TVG; International Expert Adam McGrath Joins Roster

After joining the TVG broadcast team for select days this summer, Larry Collmus will move into an expanded role at America's horse racing network. Best known as the voice of the Triple Crown and Breeders' Cup on NBC, Collmus will be covering the races from Gulfstream Park this winter as well as joining in on additional broadcasts.

“I have really enjoyed working with the great folks at TVG and doing something new besides race calling has been a fun experience,” said Collmus. “I'm looking forward to expanding this relationship and also returning to Gulfstream where I called races for ten years. It'll be a fun – and warm – winter!”

In addition to his time at Gulfstream Park from 2006 through 2017, Collmus has been the track announcer at major tracks across the country including the NYRA circuit, Monmouth Park and Del Mar, and has worked as the race caller for NBC Sports' coverage of the Triple Crown since 2011 and the Breeders' Cup since 2012. He will be reprising his role as the announcer for the Breeders' Cup which will be held at Del Mar November 5-6.

International expert Adam McGrath, formerly a host at Racing.com with years of experience in Australia, has also joined the TVG talent roster and will be adding his expert insights into coverage of international racing. McGrath currently resides in Ohio but will be relocating to Los Angeles in the new year.
