Santa Anita Cancels Dec. 30 Racing

Officials at Santa Anita Park have made the proactive decision to cancel the program scheduled for this Thursday, Dec. 30, given a weather forecast that calls for additional significant rainfall in and around the track. The two turf races scheduled for Sunday's opening day card–the GI American Oaks and GII Santa Anita Mathis Brothers Mile S. and GIII San Gabriel S.–were transferred to the main track owing to the underfoot conditions. Racing will continue Friday, Dec. 31.

The three turf stakes scheduled for Friday have been pushed back to the weekend with a more favorable weather pattern expected. The GIII Robert J. Frankel S. will now be run Saturday, Jan. 1, while the Eddie Logan S. and Blue Norther S. for 2-year-old males and fillies, respectively, will take place Sunday, Jan. 2.

Saturday's card also features the GII Joe Hernandez S., the GIII Sham S. and the GIII La Canada S. In addition to the transferred juvenile stakes, Sunday's program also includes the $75,000 Kalookan Queen S.

Billy Turner, Trainer Of Triple Crown Winner Seattle Slew, Needs Help In Face Of Rapidly Spreading Cancer

Seattle Slew, the 1977 Triple Crown winner, holds a place of legends in horse racing and is one of the most well known racehorse names even outside of racing. Now Billy Turner, Seattle Slew's trainer through his undefeated Triple Crown run, is 81 years of age and facing advanced rapidly spreading cancer. He needs the help of the racing industry and Seattle Slew's fans.

Billy Turner is the 81-year old former racehorse trainer, best known for his horsemanship and training of the 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew. A resident of Marion County, Fla. since his retirement from training, he was diagnosed almost two years ago with prostate cancer which had spread to and weakened his bones. Until recently, Billy was a resident at the Ocala Jockey Club farm townhome village. He made guest appearances at the Ocala Jockey Club International 3-day Event, and there was even a special $750 award created to honor a top-placing Thoroughbred with Seattle Slew heritage.

He was admitted to the hospital on Friday, Dec. 17, 2021 after suffering significant shortness of breath, and fluid was drained from his lungs. Unfortunately, testing of the fluid revealed that his cancer had spread to his lungs. He has chosen not to receive further treatment for his cancer. On Monday, Dec. 27, he was transferred home for hospice care.

He is in good spirits and looking forward to being back with his wife Pat and in the comfort of a home environment.

Billy and Pat are facing increased healthcare costs, moving costs, and unforeseen costs related to his upcoming hospice care and beyond. Billy's latest hospital stay and hospice care is likely to add further unexpected medical and living costs. Pavla and Erik Nygaard, the former owners of the Ocala Jockey Club farm where the Turners lived until the recent sale of the farm, will match up to $10,000 of funds raised through this GoFundMe effort.

The world of horse racing, as well as other equestrian disciplines with Seattle Slew in their bloodlines, owes much to Billy Turner's masterful guidance of Seattle Slew and his legacy. It will mean much to Billy to have the financial support of his and Seattle's Slew's fans, as well as prayers and words of encouragement.

The GI Juddmonte Spinster S. winner Mushka (Empire Maker) will see her fifth expensive foal named WHENTHEDAWNBREAKS make a career debut against a full field of maidens going long on the turf. A $370,000 Keeneland September yearling last year, the bulk of this Brad Cox trainee's works have been over the synthetic at Turfway Park, and at a five-furlong breeze. Mushka changed hands several times over the years for big numbers: $1.6 million as a 2006 Saratoga yearling from Zayat Stables, $2.4 million from Brushwood Stables in 2008 during Keeneland November, and $650,000 from SF Bloodstock and Newgate Farm at the 2016 Keeneland November sale. Her progeny sold just as well as yearlings, include Heyaarat (Empire Maker) for $1.65 million from the Shadwell Estate at 2012 Keeneland September, and Crowned (Bernardini) for $1.2 million going the way of John Ferguson at 2014 Keeneland September. Queen Goddess Gate To Wire In American Oaks

Queen Goddess was trying dirt for the first time, but looked right at home with an easy wire-to-wire victory in the GII American Oaks–which was automatically downgraded after it came off the turf Sunday at Santa Anita. Kicked straight into the lead by Juan Hernandez, Queen Goddess assumed command after the opening furlong and cut out the running while racing a bit off the inside turning down the backstretch. Moving comfortably through a half in :47.62, the dark bay filly lobbed them along comfortably as she began to work clear into the final three-eighths of a mile. Stablemate Nicest tried to make a race of it in upper stretch, but Queen Goddess just kept on finding to lead home a one-two finish for trainer Michael McCarthy.

“She showed me a lot today,” Hernandez said. “She broke really sharp. She came to run today because out of the gate, I felt that she was trying to run to get the lead and she got comfortable there and [the other horses] let me go. She held on to the lead pretty good. Around the quarter pole when she felt the other filly–I actually felt her too, and in listening to the crowd, I could tell the other filly was coming–so we started working really hard and she just kept going, she never stopped. She's a really nice filly.”

Of his one-two finish, McCarthy said, “I was extremely disappointed when I heard the race was coming off the turf. All four owners decided to give it a shot on the dirt and I can't thank them enough. We'll see what's next for both these horses.”

Queen Goddess graduated over the Del Mar lawn in August and added an optional claimer at the seaside oval Sept. 4. She was well beaten while trying graded company for the first time when fifth over a yielding Keeneland course in the Oct. 16 GI Queen Elizabeth II Cup. She was most recently third in a 1 1/16-mile optional claimer at Del Mar Nov. 25.

Yeguada Centurion purchased Royal Story, in foal to Mendelssohn, for $125,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November sale. Her Mendelssohn filly sold for €235,000 at this year's Arqana August sale. The winner's third dam, Just Reward (Deputy Minister), a daughter of Heavenly Prize (Seeking the Gold), produced Grade I winner Persistently (Smoke Glacken), as well as the dam of graded winner Stays in Vegas (City Zip).
