BHA Charges Dan Skelton With Two Breaches Of Trainers’ Code Of Conduct

The British Horseracing Authority has charged trainer Dan Skelton with two breaches of the trainers' code of conduct regarding the sale of a horse which “appears to lack transparency,” reports the Racing Post.

George Gently was a £130,000 (about US$176,000) private purchase in 2016 by a group of owners led by Tony Holt. After the purchase of the horse, owners were made aware of a tendon injury that would then keep the horse from racing for 516 days. Once he returned to the races, George Gently showed little promise and was later sold for £1,800 (US$2,441).

After the horse was sold for a significantly reduced price, the syndicate learned that Skelton had received a third of the horse's original sale price (£43,333, or approximately US$59,000). Skelton alleges that those funds represented a deal made with George Gently's original owner in lieu of training fees. 

The BHA initially dismissed the complaint, but reopened the case and concluded that the arrangement appears to lack transparency.”

Economic Indicators: U.S. Wagering Tops $12 Billion In 2021 For Highest Total Handle Since 2009

Equibase, North American racing's official database, on Wednesday released its 2021 statistics for the industry's economic indicators, including field size, wagering, and other data, along with 2019 and 2020 comparables. The 2019 data is included as a  pre-COVID-19 comparison.

Total handle on U.S. races in 2021 topped $12 billion, reaching the highest figure since 2009. That number represents an 11.86 percent increase over wagering in 2020 ($10.9B), and an increase of 10.74 percent compared to 2019 ($11B).

By comparison, the 2009 wagering total of $12.3 billion came from a total of 49,368 races. The 2021 wagering totals were from 33,567 races, a 32 percent decline in the number of races.

“Against an extraordinarily difficult backdrop, the resiliency of Thoroughbred racing was on full display in 2021 as we concluded the year with significant growth in purses and total handle of more than $12 billion, the highest since 2009,” said Tom Rooney, president and chief executive officer of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association. “We thank our customers for their ongoing support as their wagering dollars continue to fuel our industry. As we turn the page to 2022, we look forward to the beginning of a new era for U.S. Thoroughbred racing with the launch of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) and an even greater focus on equine safety and welfare and the integrity of America's oldest sport.”

Race days and starts both increased over 2020, which is expected after the pandemic shut down much of the U.S.'s live racing last year, but average field size showed a decline of 7.2 percent from 2020 to 2021. Over the same period, despite an increase of 10 percent in average purses per race day, average wagering per race day showed a 9.29 percent decline.

As compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019, however, average wagering per race day showed an over 20 percent increase in 2021 as the number of race days fell by 7.98 percent. That's despite the average field size dropping from 7.53 in 2019 to 7.37 in 2021.

Total purses showed the largest percentage increase from 2020 to 2021, up 35.77 percent and 10.09 percent per race day.

Overall, the numbers suggest the horse racing industry is recovering from the pandemic, but also that it is struggling to retain field size as foal crops have declined in numbers.

National Museum Of Racing And Hall Of Fame’s Foal Patrol Season Five Now Live

Season Five of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame's popular live webcam series Foal Patrol is now live online at www.foalpatrol.com. Live footage will expand as the mares approach their expected foaling dates.

Foal Patrol is a one-of-a-kind collection of live cameras following the daily activities of in-foal mares and their foals produced by the National Museum of Racing. Millions of people throughout the world have viewed the popular webcam program since its initial season in 2018.

Foal Patrol Season Five participants are: Elate (in foal to Speightstown at Claiborne Farm, Paris, Ky.), Spanish Bunny (in foal to Uncle Mo at Gainesway Farm, Lexington, Ky.), Traveling Tiger (in foal to Audible at Safari North at Pauls Mill Farm, Versailles, Ky.), Repeta (in foal to Volatile at Three Chimneys Farm, Versailles, Ky.), and Floripa (in foal to Vekoma at Old Tavern Farm, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.).

Season Five will feature a new education site to connect Foal Patrol fans of all ages to online resources, videos, and podcasts that begin with breeding and reproduction and span the life of the Thoroughbred. With a page Just for Kids; the Insights videos for youth considering industry careers; online resources about the health and care of the horse; and the platform of Your Stories for viewers' photo submissions and stories of how Foal Patrol has inspired them; the site will feature something for the youngest to oldest viewers. New content will be added to the site weekly from January through June.

A variety of Thoroughbred industry partners have committed to supporting Foal Patrol's educational efforts with regular content, support, and promotion throughout Season Five.

Explainer: Pursuant to a Settlement Agreement and Mutual Release with the California Horse Racing Board, Trainer Doug O'Neill, who failed to post 5 Detention Stall Signs at Los Alamitos Race Course on July 5, 2021, is fined $5,000 for violation of California Horse Racing Board Rule #1845 (c)(2)(A) (Authorized Bleeder Medication).

Date: 12/31/2021

Licensee: Diego Herrera, jockey

Penalty: $750

Violation: Riding crop violation

Explainer: Apprentice Jockey Diego Herrera is fined $750 for violation of California Horse Racing Board rule #1688(b)(8) (Use of Riding Crop–more than six times during the running of the race–Second offense within the past sixty days) during the eighth race at Santa Anita Park on December 27, 2021.

Track: Santa Anita

Date: 01/01/2022

Licensee: Emily Ellingwood, jockey

Penalty: Three-day suspension

Violation: Careless riding

Explainer: Apprentice Jockey Emily Ellingwood, who rode Wiki Wahine in the first race at Santa Anita Park Dec. 31, 2021, is suspended for 3 racing days (Jan. 8, 9 and 14, 2022), for altering course without sufficient clearance on the backside and causing interference. This constitutes a violation of California Horse Racing Board rule #1699 (Riding Rules–careless riding). Pursuant to California Horse Racing Board rule #1766 (Designated Races) the term of suspension shall not prohibit participation in designated races.

Licensee: Wayne Barnett, jockey

Penalty: Three-day suspension

Violation: Riding crop violation

Explainer: Jockey Wayne Barnett, who rode Philosopher's Tone in the first race at Santa Anita Park Jan. 1, 2022, is suspended for 3 racing days, (January 9, 14 and 15, 2022) for violation of California Horse Racing Board rule #1688 (c)(2) (Use of Riding Crop–not in the underhand position–second offense in the last 60 days). Pursuant to California Horse Racing Board rule #1766 (Designated Races) the term of suspension shall not prohibit participation in designated races.
